[ID-4274243] InDesign clearing Undo stack frequently
Undo not working, InDesign 21.02x64
16.12.2025
As recently as yesterday, it was possible to perform more than 50 undo actions, but today only 1–2 steps are available, and my colleagues are experiencing the same issue.
Fix for this issue is now available in the latest InDesign Prerelease build - 21.2.0.27
Please try out this Prerelease build and let us know if it resolves the issue.
If you are not already part of InDesign's Prerelease program and would like to join and try out the latest Prerelease build, please do the following:
* Go to https://www.adobeprerelease.com/
* Sign in with your Adobe ID (the Email ID associated with your Adobe account)
* Select ‘Available Programs’
* Find ‘InDesign Prerelease’ and click ‘Join’
* Once you’ve joined, go to the Creative Cloud Desktop Application on your machine, click on 'Apps' in the section on the left
* Select the 'Pre-release' tab – there you will find the InDesign (Prerelease) build
* To check the Build number of the Prerelease build, hover the cursor over the name – you will see the Build number 'v_________'
* Select ‘Install’

I took Giovani Cospefogo advice and added more memory in my laptop. I happened to have another identical computer with memory capsules that I could move to this computer instead. Just like Giovani I had 16 GB before (now 32 GB but 24 was enough according to Giovani). With the increased memory and using Indesign for 30 minutes or so, the undo stack has still not disappeared, and also the graphic problem with text rendering (text disappearing while you write, not refreshing parts of the screen properly) also seems to be gone!
I will write again here if the problems reappear. (Make sure you get the correct kind of RAM for your computer, if you decide to try this "workaround".)The technical requirements are Minimum 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended), so Adobe still needs to fix this! Perhaps this is a lead for them to follow up, that the amount of memory may matter.

Got here through a different thread (https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-undo-history-clears-itself-without-user-action/m-p/15635945/page/6) in which someone suggested keeping an eye on the History panel... I did just that and watched my history erase when it hit 6 items.
These constant updates are more and more frustrating! Not to mention the whole Adobe suite seems be shifting their focus on non-professionals / casual users who don't have decades of physical sense memory built into their workflow.
Please bring back standalone software purchases, if not for this reason alone... woo whomever you want, get richer than god... good for you... some of us aren't interested in having to relearn these apps every 6 months.

Further to all of the frustrated people's comments regarding the issue, and lack of fix, why can't Adobe make v19.0 available on CC again? I've heard that this version doesn't have the 'undo' issue - it's a poor solution for a 'premium'/pricey product...but it's a solution, which at this point is what MANY people need.

We need an update asap. This issue together with the text disappearing is super frustrating!

Problem saving files in InDesign 2026 (v26)
Several colleagues are experiencing a critical issue in InDesign 2026 where the “Save” command fails with an error, often stating that the file is corrupted. However, “Save As” works normally, allowing the file to be saved under a new name.
The problem started recently and affects different colleagues on different machines. Reinstalling InDesign does not consistently resolve the issue. Some colleagues suspect a conflict with a recent Windows update.
Temporary workarounds so far:
Use Save As instead of Save
Revert to InDesign 2025, which does not have this issue
It appears to be a bug in InDesign 2026, not user error or originally corrupted files.
Update: I removed yesterday’s Windows update, on the 14th, and now I can save without any issues. But Ctrl+Z is still limited.

It's absurd that this problem hasn't been resolved!!!!!!!!!!

Adobe team, we need an update now.
This has been more than a month of working with a severely limited tool. It's a complete disruption of workflow.
Adobe are meant to be the industry standard, but after this, realistically, minor bug causing such a disrupt and the absolute lack of urgency of the Adobe team to find a fix, it begs the question whether moving to a competitor is the better recourse.

Only reverting to Indesign 19.0 fixes the undo and disappearing text issues. I recommend this older version; it works much better than the latest versions.

And I just want to make sure you guys know I solved my problem just by adding a extra cheap 8GB DDR3 RAM stick in my ten year old Dell Desktop. It's a 10 year PC with Windows 10 working flawlessly now. UNDO is perfect again and no more graphic glicthes in the text boxes!
I am 24GB instead of 16GB now.
It's so weird and bizarre.

I just want to make sure you know this error is also present in InDesign 2025 (ver. 20.5.1), so it is not just InDesign 2026!
And also on older systems such as Windows 10 – making your suggestion (that this bug is due to a Windows Update pushed out to newer systems on dec 9th 2025) less plausible.
I would rather believe this bug started after updating InDesign.

It's kinda messed up that I bought a machine with more than the min requirements just so I can run Adobe software without issue; and now the machine I bought is the reason I can't run Adobe programs. Really wish I could afford an xtra $1000 to have an apple logo on my computer; always seems like that's the only answer...

I must report two critical issues we are experiencing with Adobe InDesign:
Undo (Ctrl+Z) is extremely limited, working only for about three actions before becoming unavailable.
Text randomly disappears after mouse clicks, without any clear or reproducible user action that should cause it.
Both issues started immediately after installing the latest version of InDesign.
Because of this, we uninstalled the updated version and reverted to InDesign 20.5.1, however the problems persist even on this version.System information:
Operating System: Windows 11 Pro
RAM: 16 GB
Location: Italy
It is important to note that these issues affect the entire team, not just a single workstation or user, which strongly suggests a software-related problem rather than an isolated setup issue.
These bugs are significantly impacting our daily workflow and productivity.
We would appreciate guidance on how to resolve them or confirmation if these are known issues currently under investigation.Thank you for your support.

Version: Adobe InDesign 21.1 (Windows)
Undo and History stops working after a few seconds and it is driving everyone insane. Reverting back to previous versions of InDesign does not help. The problem persists.

the undo issue is a weirdly inconsistent issue with my team. some people have the problem and others don't. but for those that do, it's really made their daily work significantly more difficult. this and the disappearing text have affected about half of our team. and considering how long it's been going on, this really needs to be a priority fix at this point.

I've followed steps in other community threads for possible solutions, like this one:
but it's clear that this is a software issue that needs to be fixed by adobe. This is a very difficult problem to work around, and I struggle to understand why this problem hasn't been fixed sooner.
Reverting to previous versions of InDesign should be THE solution for problems like this, only it doesn't seem to be fixing it this time. I'm hearing that InDesign 19.0 may be free of this issue, but I can only go back to version 20.0.
Like many people here, I'm a professional with deadlines. This directly impacts my ability to effectively complete my work. While I adore this software, it's incredibly frustrating to see this seemingly preventable problem happen at a company of this scale. Please either fix this issue or make older versions of InDesign available!
