[ID-4274243] InDesign clearing Undo stack frequently
Undo not working, InDesign 21.02x64
16.12.2025
As recently as yesterday, it was possible to perform more than 50 undo actions, but today only 1–2 steps are available, and my colleagues are experiencing the same issue.
Fix for this issue is available in the latest InDesign 2026 release (21.2.0.30) and InDesign 2025 LTS release (20.5.2.078), please update to this release from CCD app.

I am using the pre-release, and one thing wrong that's happening is when I apply a shadow effect to text, and then move the text box, the shadow displaces. If I turn the shadow effect off and then back on, it will be correctly positioned, but having to do this is a pain. I have "use global light" turned off, but when I turned it on it made no difference. Anyone else experiencing this issue when trying?

Just a heads' up to anyone coming to this thread for tips: A new update was released after the bugged version, but for me that update causes a crash when I try to save.

The undo issues and the disappearing text are perfectly fixed in the Prereleased version ! This a true relief. I have no saving problem for the moment.
But please make the regular release as soon as possible fo everyone. These very frustrating problems waste a lot of time !
I am not the only one so I want to mention that the day I was notified with the prelease, I joined it and the only prerelease available in my apps was the Illustrator one. It seems to be fixed the day after.

like Melissa, my company won't be using prerelease programs for production work. how quickly will this be rolled out into the regular release? i had heard from an internal source it might have been last friday, but as of yet, no update available.

Some companies don't allow employees to do this prerelease stuff. Our systems are locked down. And rolling back Windows updates isn't really an option either.
Please just fix it. And chill on making frequent updates. I want to be able to create and edit files reliably. That's what we're paying for.

It looks like this pre-release version is working for me with the Undo-issues. I also don't experience the Save issues as mentioned below by a few people, though I'm not quite sure if my Windows did an auto-update which seems to cause this according to Petr.
For anyone not seeing the prerelease version in CC, I had the same problem. You need to install the latest ID version (normal way) and then it will show at the prereleases (maybe after a restart)
One question though, will I be able to open the files saved with this prerelease version in a normal ID version?

Though I am using 19.0 for now, when I tried using the existing version (NOT the prerelease patch) it will not allow me to save as, save a copy, save, or export, saying that the file is corrupt. My software also immediately crashes afterward. This was not happening before, so it seems there is ongoing corruption with this version. Using 19.0 is a temporary solve, but I have to convert every file I open. What a MESS. Adobe, get this fix DONE!

Hi, I was so relieved to see there might be a fix to the undo issue + disappearing text boxes.
I've gone through the prerelease steps above - joined indesign prerelease and it's not showing up in my apps. It's only showing Illustrator prerelease that I didn't sign up for!?
Please help, this is really effecting my work flow right now! I depend on Indesign on a daily basis and this is beyond frustrating. We pay a hefty price for adobe subscription, we need this these apps to be super reliable.

Hello, I am currently testing the pre-release InDesign 21.2.0.27 on Windows 11 version 25H2 with 16 GB RAM. I can confirm that both major issues — limited undo steps and disappearing text during editing — appear to be fixed in this build.
These fixes are critical, so please make sure they are quickly rolled out to InDesign 2025 and 2026, as both versions are actively used in production environments and are essential for ongoing projects.
Unfortunately, I can also confirm what Meyrele reported bellow: the latest Microsoft Security Update KB5074109 (26200.7623) introduces a new serious issue. After installing this update, the Save function no longer works reliably.
When attempting to save, InDesign displays the message: “InDesign is unable to save this file. We tried, but it appears to be damaged.” Using Save As sometimes results in a 0 kB INDD file, and Save As IDML caused my InDesign pre-release to quit unexpectedly. The exact behavior differs between InDesign 2025 (20.5.1) and InDesign 2026 (21.1), but in both cases saving is unreliable and effectively broken.
Uninstalling the latest Windows security update, which is fortunately still possible, resolves the issue, but this is obviously not a viable long-term solution.

Hello everyone, I just went online to customer support chat and they immediately downloaded and installed version 19.0 (2024) for me remotely, since it is not available for download via the Cloud app. They are working to release a patch soon for this windows history bug. This older version seems have resolved this issue for me. I would urge anyone who doesn't want to wait any longer for the fix to connect with chat and do what I did. Best of luck everyone!

I took Giovani Cospefogo advice and added more memory in my laptop. I happened to have another identical computer with memory capsules that I could move to this computer instead. Just like Giovani I had 16 GB before (now 32 GB but 24 was enough according to Giovani). With the increased memory and using Indesign for 30 minutes or so, the undo stack has still not disappeared, and also the graphic problem with text rendering (text disappearing while you write, not refreshing parts of the screen properly) also seems to be gone!
I will write again here if the problems reappear. (Make sure you get the correct kind of RAM for your computer, if you decide to try this "workaround".)The technical requirements are Minimum 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended), so Adobe still needs to fix this! Perhaps this is a lead for them to follow up, that the amount of memory may matter.

Got here through a different thread (https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-undo-history-clears-itself-without-user-action/m-p/15635945/page/6) in which someone suggested keeping an eye on the History panel... I did just that and watched my history erase when it hit 6 items.
These constant updates are more and more frustrating! Not to mention the whole Adobe suite seems be shifting their focus on non-professionals / casual users who don't have decades of physical sense memory built into their workflow.
Please bring back standalone software purchases, if not for this reason alone... woo whomever you want, get richer than god... good for you... some of us aren't interested in having to relearn these apps every 6 months.

Further to all of the frustrated people's comments regarding the issue, and lack of fix, why can't Adobe make v19.0 available on CC again? I've heard that this version doesn't have the 'undo' issue - it's a poor solution for a 'premium'/pricey product...but it's a solution, which at this point is what MANY people need.

Problem saving files in InDesign 2026 (v26)
Several colleagues are experiencing a critical issue in InDesign 2026 where the “Save” command fails with an error, often stating that the file is corrupted. However, “Save As” works normally, allowing the file to be saved under a new name.
The problem started recently and affects different colleagues on different machines. Reinstalling InDesign does not consistently resolve the issue. Some colleagues suspect a conflict with a recent Windows update.
Temporary workarounds so far:
Use Save As instead of Save
Revert to InDesign 2025, which does not have this issue
It appears to be a bug in InDesign 2026, not user error or originally corrupted files.
Update: I removed yesterday’s Windows update, on the 14th, and now I can save without any issues. But Ctrl+Z is still limited.
