InDesign performance issue: Hand tool freezes
10.12.6 Sierra
Hand tool freezes and no other tool can be selected. It won't unfreeze unless I shut down entire computer. This is a recurring issue.
Hi,
In order to reproduce the issue we sent information to all the affected users who have either voted or commented on this thread.
Based on the replies we got we could infer that the issue is occurring when a third party software or application is also running in parallel. Some examples of the software used include Global Auto-correct, Google Chrome,
Moreover, when the issue occurs it seems to hamper all CC applications such as Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
A possible fix for the solution includes restarting the application or restarting the system.
In the absence of any consistent reproducible steps, we are currently closing this thread as “not reproducible”. In case you again encounter the issue, please create a new thread mentioning the steps with which we can reproduce the issue and additional softwares, if in case any, that you are using.
Thanks,
InDesign Team

OSX 10.13.6
40 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB
Standard wired keyboardInDesign 13.1
Cannot unselect hand tool. Restarting InDesign has no effect. Clicking to other Adobe apps has no effect. Mashing keyboard has no effect. Have not yet tried restarting computer. Spotlight shortcuts disabled.
Holding down the command key gives me the zoom tool (as if I were holding down space bar and command keys).
Actually I now see that the hand tool is locked on ALL Adobe applications. Space bar works normally in other applications outside Adobe.
I was screen sharing when first encountered this problem.
Activity Monitor shows Indesign using 3.23GB of memory. Next is "kernel_task" at 2.34GB.

Shame. People pay heavy money to run these apps and do their work and something as basic as the hand/move tool is always doing this. You have to do magic to get things working again. restart, throw out prefs, quit other apps you need to be using etc...

My InDesign file is stuck on the hand cursor so I can only pan around the document. it allows me to select the other tools and shows them as highlighted, but the cursor and it's functionality is not changing. I restarted InDesign, but it still is not working.

Same problem here. If I recall correctly this is an old bug since years back. And it appears it has come back, unbelievable. Quitting Safari and reopening it solved it for me. Still, this has to be fixed.

I started having the same problem today, what I found was causing it was having to many programs open eating up memory. I closed a few and it started working again. I tend to have all the suite open and word, web browsers, iTunes and so on. Try closing a few... worked for me.

I noticed this today in version 13.1 (x64). It is a real pain. Normally the spacebar to hand tool shortcut works fine for all of my tools, except when utilizing the zoom tool which is likely where you would need it most.
If you zoom in and want to move around using the hand tool, it would just zoom in further. However, I noticed that if I am on the zoom tool, press the spacebar, move the mouse before clicking, then the hand tool works. It is a royal pain in the butt, but hopefully this helps. And more, hopefully Adobe fixes it. -

Same issue for InDesign on this end on MacOS. I quit Safari and the hand shortcut works now. Jeez, annoying!

I am also now having the issue all of a sudden – I haven't updated anything, or changed preferences. I also can't resize boxes using shift or cmd option and shift like before.
InDesign is so buggy, you would think for the amount that we are paying for it they could at least put some people on problems like these.

Spotify seemed to clash with mine today - same thing - spacebar didn't change the mouse to hand or magnify tools. Very annoying.

The spacebar doesn't work for me either..
Are there any more suggestions on what could be the problem?
I've tried doing the Safari thing.. didn't work.
The weird thing is.. It worked fine.. and while working in indesign it suddenly stopt -

Others who have commented are correct. It is something weird between Apple Safari and Adobe software apps. Once I quit Safari, the spacebar immediately began functioning properly. But, I never had this weird issue period until I updated my Adobe CC apps to the 2018 versions... That was when it started acting weird...foolishness...

Same issue here...Wish I would not have updated. It is across the board for me though, in all Adobe apps I just freaking updated, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. All showing the same issue, spacebar shortcut for zoom tool not working... Adobe never has these issues, not good Adobe, not good at all... Don't be like the AutoCad people over at AutoDesk... Please get this patched up and fixed asap. Thanks - Dan

Did any of you find a fix?
This is what worked for me. I quit out of ID & Safari. I restarted ID & it worked fine. I restarted Safari & it's still working fine. See if that helps you. -

Are you using Dictation or Global auto correct ? If yes, then try to turn it off, restart the computer and then check if you are getting this issue again?
It worked for me.
