You can even see the Black BG appearing in the Place preview, under options.

After the update to 15.1.1 I still have this issue. Changing from 8 bit PNG to CMYK and back hasn't helped. :)

I was having a similar issue with the black background, but my offenders were Photoshop + Acrobat. I was trying to make a signature in Acrobat. For me, changing it from RBG color to Indexed fixed it.

Go figure.

this happen to me also with indesign 2020. For me the solution was to open the PNG on photoshop. In photoshop i realized the png was with indexed colors. I've change the color mode to RBG and save it again as png. the black background dissapeared.

This issue seems to have a lot of different work around that works for some people. For me changing the quick export options worked.

In Preferences > Export > Quick Export Format I checked the "Smaller File (8-bit)" box, and then saved as PNG instead of exporting as.

Now 8 bit is what I needed, so it might not be helpful for 16/32 bit, but this is what worked for me and might help others :)

I recieved video that won't play only black background appears

I ran into this problem, although I had a white background showing up. I used PhotoShop to remove the background from a JPEG, saved it as a PS file. When I pulled it into InDesign I kept getting the white background. I had several images prior to this without this issue, so I was baffled why it was showing up now. I eventually copied one of my other images in InDesign, then placed the problem image file and the background was gone. Not sure what is going on, but that was the only way I could solve the issue.

I found this only happens on PNG 8 for me - when i output to PNG it works when importing to indesign whereas PNG8 has a green background

I was just able to fix this by changing the PNG from indexed to CMYK color.

Adobe, this is still an issue. Any updates?

Here is my workflow from Photoshop to InDesign:
Worker File (Tiff w/transparent background) > Export As... > PNG (transparency checked) > Place File into InDesign Doc > asset background is black. The same thing happens with Save As...

I've worked around this for the past few years by making one edit in Photoshop to the PNG (clicking once with the eraser in the transparent background will do) then saving the file. It will now import with a transparent background.

Unfortunately, none of the below fixes worked for me. Ended up copying the assets and pasting into photoshop.

I made the .png files with Illustrator Asset Export. And when I import them in Indesign (not for printed matters) and the background is green.
My solution was to open the .png file in Photoshop. Move the image 1px up and down and saved it again.

A little late to the party here. But encountered the problem myself just now. After some playing around I found that the index colour mode was causing it. I changed it to CMYK / RGB and the background immediately became transparent. Hope that helps someone.

i found a temporary fix, I went to photoshop, created a mask around the object and saved again png. Worked like a charm!
