4. URGENT: Add an "Empty Output" Option for Text Variables

   Currently, InDesign text variables (e.g., Running Headers) always display the last non-empty value when the source is empty. While this behavior can be useful in some workflows, it causes major problems in others. In publishing and educational workflows, having an “empty” variable output display the previous value is unacceptable.

   We urgently need a way to explicitly tell InDesign: “If the source is empty, display nothing (truly empty).”

   Proposed Solutions:
   - Introduce a new special character (e.g., “Null Variable Marker”) that, when placed in the source text, forces the variable to render as empty.
   - Alternatively, provide an option in the variable definition: “Treat whitespace-only sources as empty.”

   This is an urgent request. It affects daily workflows in publishing, education, and large-scale editorial projects and needs to be prioritized.

6. Character style applied to Table of Contents header

   When creating a book's table of contents (TOC), if you apply a character style to the first chapter, that style is applied to the TOC entry but it's also wrongly applied to the TOC header as well. It seems to be taking whatever character style that's applied to the first letter in the first chapter.

   I have a sample file I can send.
   Tested in InDesign 2024 and 2022 for Mac.

7. variable fonts

   In a TrueType based variable font, if some nodes have implied deltas at the edge of outline, that edge can jump around as seen in the attached video. The right stem of the "n" should stay on the baseline. And it does in all other environment that I tested (Illustrator, Photoshop, Chrome, Safari …).

8. Find/Change | Glyph | Failure to find characters with applied character styles

   Version: Adobe InDesign 19.5.4 and 20.3.1

   I cannot post a .zip here apparently, so I've put my InDesign file.

   Steps to reproduce:
   1. Make a character style that ONLY sets the font to bold.
   2. put down a glyph twice, I used the AE glyph (GID/CID 138).
   3. For one, apply bold manually.
   4. For the other, apply the bold character style.
   5. Open the Find/Change Glyph menu and enter the GID/CID used, along with the font and bold style.

   Expected Result:
   Both of the glyphs would be found

   Actual Result:
   Only the glyph without the character style applied will be found.

   As listed in multiple other reports, managing missing glyphs is a major pain point.

   Version: Adobe InDesign 19.5.4 and 20.3.1

9. stroke window - drop down menu options

   Indesign 20.5
   In the stroke window there is functionality issue in the drop down menus - 'type' and 'start/end' for arrows etc. The drop down menu does not stay open to select an option. Very annoying and can't add arrows to lines. Also noticing the issue is in the toolbar as well for strokes.

10. [ID-4230173]Custom Workspace is not retained.

    InDesign 2025 workspace resets to basic/essentials every time i open the program or another document. I have a workspace saved and the program is not honoring that.

12. Eyedropper tool should not copy content fill by default.

    I don't think I have ever needed to copy the content fill settings from one image frame to another, but by default the eyedropper tool copies how the photo fills the frame, which is pretty annoying.

    Requested Feature: Please add a checkbox specifically for content fill. Please have it unchecked by default.

    Right now you can only disable content fill from being apply by unchecking "color and tint," which doesn't make sense and is not intuitive.

    Expectation 1: eyedrop a frame to copy it's color/stoke/ other attributes, but not content fill which changes the size/position of the image within the frame
    Result 1: eyedrop tool copies content fill, requiring me to reposition the photo again, or manually update other attributes.

    Expectation 2: after learning you could potentially change what attributes the eyedropper changes, I looked for something like "content fill" but found nothing.

    Result 2: By process of elemination, I fouund that "Color and Tint" disabled content fill from being copied.

13. Converting pdf to an indesign doc removes all the hyphens

    Imported a PDF as an InDesign doc and it has removed all the hyphens. for example the word 'multi-disciplinary', has become 'multidisciplinary' - I'm having to do a find on the PDF doc and manually add them back in but wanted to let you @Adobe

14. [ID-4244288]Problem with Variable fonts - some glyphs are displayed with a lighter weight on changing axes.

    Some variable fonts works as expected, but for some, the font displays at a lighter weight (perhaps regular?) when the weight is set for anything heavier than about 750. It appears that the heavier weight's metrics are used.

    In my my limited test, the weight prints properly.

    I'm on a 27-inch, iMac 2020, Mac OS 13.5.1, InD 19.

    The fix of the issue is now available in the InDesign 2024(v19.1.0.043) and above. We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.

15. Change Format selection for "Change Case" disappears after altering Find Format

    Indesign 2025
    When searching for a style for which I want to perform a change case operation, it works fine. If I then want to change the style that I'm searching for, when I confirm that change and return to the main window of find/replace, the parameters for the "change format" window get wiped out...I believe this only happens with change case. I tested this by changing the case in the Basic formats to "all caps". I found that if I used any other parameter, or any other parameter in conjunction with the new "change case"...the "Change Format" parameters remained...but when only using the change case parameter, "Change Format" gets wiped out if you choose a different style or parameter in "Find Format".

    In short, the first time works. If you then try to change the Find Format selection, the Change Format selection for "Change Case" gets wiped out.

16. Critical Request: Disable Mandatory “Save As New Document” Behavior in Latest InDesign Versions

    Dear Adobe InDesign Team,

    Since the introduction of the most recent InDesign update (version 19.x and onward), our team has experienced a disruptive new behavior: InDesign frequently requires us to save working documents under a new name, even when opening files that have not changed location, permissions, or ownership.

    This behavior appears arbitrary and is not user-configurable. It breaks a long-standing professional workflow and creates significant confusion due to the unnecessary proliferation of duplicate file versions. As a result, our team faces increased risk of:
    • Publishing or sending incorrect versions of documents to clients
    • Compromising file version control and internal quality checks
    • Reputation damage and even liability exposure due to avoidable errors

    We must emphasize that this behavior was not present in earlier versions of InDesign, and there has never been a need to “Save As” files repeatedly for the exact same document on the same workstation by the same user. While we understand that metadata integrity or compatibility might be the intended reason, Adobe must allow professionals to disable this mechanism.

    Please provide an option in Preferences that gives users control over whether InDesign enforces this “Save As New” behavior. This should be a user-side decision — not a forced system behavior.

    Until then, this issue undermines our ability to deliver reliable, efficient, and professional publishing services.

18. dialogs dont appear infront of main app window - appear behind it would seem

    The dialog boxes don't appear when expected, (I think they are behind the main viewing window of the app) until i do a 'mission control' on the trackpad and then release it - then the dialog box appears. It's not handy at all and I only found out by accident as the box can sometimes appear on the laptop screen and not the secondary bigger screen i use.

19. Button Action 'Go back to previous VIEW' not working

    I use Adobe InDesign 20.3x64 2025 version

    I tried creating the interactive button in the Parent, in the normal pages, did all the troubleshoot tips I found, i.e. view the PDF file in Acrobat, ensured there is no special character in the file name, that I export correctly, deleted InDesign preferences.... I can't make the button work.

20. data merge images

    InDesign 20.0.1 on MaxOS 15.1.1 (24B91), the Data merge for images does not work. There are no errors or warmings, but upon previewing, exporting or merging the images to not populate. The same data file and downsaved indd file (ver 19) works.
