  1. Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling

Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling.

Define a variable using the text of a specific paragraph style. Add character styles to the text (or use a GREP style) and when the text is
pulled" by the variable the character style is not reflected.

Often this is used for running headers and footers. Example: if the registered trademark symbol is added to the text, it is regular case in the variable.

This also really screws up the ToC when the paragraph style is used in a ToC

  2. Price format : Wordbased diagonal strike-through

    1. Price formatting : we need a character style that allows BARRED PRICE styles : a diagonal strikethrough in a different colour, and needs a line style which allows a full line or a dotted line version . See screenshot

    2. Millions of uses a day. For a lot of indesign brochure designers.

  3. Font Substitution Preferences

I often have several of the same fonts come up that I'm missing in the documents I'm working on from other people. I think it would be great to be able to have a user preference to define a specific font I have to replace it automatically rather than just a default font.

This could also help with fonts that are technically the same, but one is an open type vs post script version.

  4. Restart footnote numbering flexibility

Currently, regardless of whether the "Restart Numbering Every: ...." checkbox does nothing to force footnotes to continue across multiple, unthreaded frames. I would have thought that if you didn't tell it to restart, it would not and would continue to increment each time if found a footnote - but that is not the case. We have various footnote scenarios based on our different clients:

For some, they want the footnotes numbered consecutively throughout their report. Others want it restarted with every major section. But these reports are complicated - hundreds of pages - and it is very inconvenient to thread…

  5. Enable relative searches, e.g. 'point size more than 10 pts' or 'space before less than 6 pts'

You can use the Find Text and Find Grep features to look for certain constant values, e.g 'point size 12 pts', 'tracking 75', 'space before 6 pts'.

But it's not possible to search for relative values, e.g. 'point size less than 12pts'. And it's not possible to do negative, e.g. search for certain text in paragraphs that do not have a certain paragraph style applied.

These features would make it much easier to find text with missing or incorrectly applied formatting, and generally would mean that the search scope can be specified more flexibly, which in turn means that InDesign's…

  6. Transparency/opacity settings for paragraph shading

It would be nice to have transparency/opacity settings for paragraph shading. In certain designs, it would be nice if paragraph shading worked a lot like a frame fill that you can control the transparency and blending options for the shading portion. This would be applicable to borders as well. Right now, to get the semblance of semi-transparency, you have to apply it to the whole frame, but you may just want the shading and no other elements to be affected.

  7. Full-width space is treated the same as Kanji

I've been using InDesign in a Japanese environment and have long been frustrated by the lack of distinction between kanji and double-byte spaces.
When you want to select consecutive Kanji by double-clicking (or command + → etc.), adjacent double-byte spaces (0x3000) will be selected together.
When you receive an unsatisfactory text manuscript, double-clicking a wasted double-byte space will select the adjacent kanji together.
I can't imagine the single benefit of this specification. It's just inconvenient.
I would like you to improve this.
I hope you will get the approval of everyone. Thank you.

  9. Deleting unused paragraph styles in one fell swoop

I highly recommend that Adobe updates a feature to delete all unused paragraph styles in one fell swoop instead of a file by file case.

  10. Diagonal Strikethrough

An upgrade to the existing strike through option with new settings that allow for diagonal lines. I've added a mockup of the character style options.

This would be an awesome little update wich has many uses and make the life of a lot of InDesigners easier.

  11. Make "Paste without formatting" work for any type of text in clipboard

If I want to paste text into InDesign and use the destination formatting rather than whatever the source is, I'm hard-wired to use "ctrl + shift + V". However it appears that if the contents of the clipboard are plain text, this command isn't available, presumably because InDesign thinks it's not necessary.

This means that the interface is inconsistent, because sometimes you need ctrl + V and sometimes you need ctrl + shift + V, depending on what's on the clipboard.

The option should always be available so that if you want plain text you can use the ctrl +…

  12. Allow footnotes to renumber in same document

When importing a Word document with footnotes or endnotes that are continuous, add feature to begin renumbering footnotes from 1 for each chapter or section. It does not work in the current versions of InDesign CC even with the preferences set to renumber with each new section when the text file is linked from section to section.

  13. Underlined spaces at the ends of lines in running text

    1. It would be nice if, when an underlined space falls at the end of a line in running text, the space "disappears" so that it's underline isn't hanging out in space like a ghost..
    2. It's valuable because it looks weird when an underlined space sticks out beyond the last nonwhite-space character in the line. It's particularly noticeable in justified type, but I think the same principal applies regardless of the justification.

  14. Underlining that skips characters with descenders

While it is a last resort in typography, when I do underline I prefer it to be just below the baseline. But this default underline overlaps descenders. Rather than having to lower underlines to avoid these clashes, could the Underline Options panel or another feature detect when an underline will overlap a descender and skip that character? - Thanks!

  16. Rotating a linear gradient used in paragraph shading

At the moment there is no level of control for rotating a linear gradient used in paragraph shading. Please add that functionality.

  17. Duplicate Table of Contents Style... Alt-[New]

Adding the possibility of duplicating TOC Style or Create New based on old one.

We still have only the option New and Edit. And all new styles have to be defined from scratch.
Or add the shortcut Alt-[New] to create New based on old one.

  18. Make character and paragraph sections of Properties panel full featured like the Character and Paragraph panels

The Properties panel is a great replacement for having the Character & Paragraph panels both open at all times. However, it's missing some functionality that's presented in the upper right menu on these panels (see attached). Some of these options aren't found anywhere else. It's a shame to need to have these panels open alongside the Properties panel. It would be preferable to add these options to the Properties panel to keep things tidy.

  19. Fit frame to text WIDTH (not just height)

When working with text in a text frame, we have the FIT FRAME TO CONTENT button that collapses the frame height to the minimum height required to fit the existing text. That's great, use it all the time, but it doesn't collapse the width at all.

It would be nice if there was also a checkbox/option or different button that would also collapse the text frame's WIDTH to the width of the longest line.

This would make it quick and easy to distribute spacing between a bunch of little text boxes aligned in a row. Right now I have to…

  20. Indic Unicode font rendering is broken in InDesign

When writing text in certain Indic scripts, InDesign does not render the font correctly. For example, using the Padauk font for the Myanmar script, the following string renders the Medial Ra (U+103C) around the consonant Na (U+1014) instead of the consonant Ma (U+1019).

    မြန်

This bug is a large blocker when dealing with Indic text in InDesign.
