The proper way to use this feature has been explained. It works like this:
The extra text frame (containing the Previous/Next Page Number) need not be linked to the text frame to which it refers. It just has to touch that text frame.
The way this feature works is that you have a text frame that contains some text on a certain page. That text continues on a different page that is random. So, for example, in a magazine, you have an article that starts on page 11, and then it continues on page 80. In that case, you will create a separate text frame on page 11, make it touch the text frame that contains the article and put "Continued on Page . Similarly, on page 80, you will create a separate text frame and make it touch the article and put "Continued from Page .

Hi,
We have been able to reproduce the issue and it is currently under investigation.—
Adobe InDesign Team
An error occurred while saving the comment An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedI just recorded a video to show it. I was previously using a external monitor, and after unplugging, Indesign wouldn't display any document pages in the working area.
I had two very different documents open, one was long with many pages filled with text and heavy images, one containing only a few pages with normal images. Both behaved the same.
An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedI noticed that the document's pages desapear after I change the display I'm working on.
I started working in a 13" macbook pro and later plugged a dell monitor. When I pushed the app to the bigger display, Indesign stoped showing the pages in the main working area. I closed the doc and opened it again, and it would display the pages normally in the dell monitor.
The same happens the other way around if I start working on the dell monitor and later change to the laptop.
Version of Adobe InDesign, InCopy or InDesign Server: Indesign 17.2
Steps to reproduce the issues: Start a document in one display and then try to go on using it in another display.
Expected result: Change displays, adjust the window size and go on working normally.
Actual result: Indesign hides all document pages in the main working area. They are still visible in the pages window.

As part of the investigation into the cause of this issue, we personally reached out to many of you over email. We have so far heard from only some of you.
Of the responses we have received, the conclusion we’ve come to is:
This issue was intermittent, happened once during the course of work but somehow got resolved and has not happened again. This issue can’t be reproduced now.Over a period of time, this thread has not thrown any fresh clues on why this issue seems to occur randomly for some and then seems to resolve itself. So we’re closing this thread.
However, even though we’re closing this thread, if you again run into this issue any time on a consistent basis, please report it here on UserVoice (in a new thread) with supporting assets like:
A) a test file,
B) detailed steps to replicate the issue
C) any…Priscila Gonzaga supported this idea · -

This is a macOS10.13 issue, specific for some Intel GPU cards. Apple has fixed(partially) this issue inside macOS10.13.4 released build.
Following are the workaround for resolving this issue.
1) Update your mac machine to latest macOS10.13.4. Here, Apple has fixed this issue to some extent. You will face very less number of rendering issues.
2) Disable GPU preview and set display performance as typical.Once you have updated to macOS10.13.4 .You might still face some rendering issues. Since, Apple has not fixed this issue completely.
Please switch off GPU rendering for these cases and report a separate post for tracking.Priscila Gonzaga supported this idea · -

The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2024(v19.0.1.205). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application and click on the context menu on the top right and click on Check for App Updates.

Never had this issue before. The preferences didn't work in the new version but were intact and I could restore them and use the older version normally.

An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedHave you guys tried to update to 17.2.1? It worked for me and a lot of other users…
An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedOk, sounds like it's working! At first, I installed the 17.1 version by mistake, so it did nothing. After reading the message explaining about the versions and how to download it, I installed the correct version, 17.2, and, since yesterday, I had no more text disappearing issues. Yay!
An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedStill the same here..

An error occurred while saving the comment Priscila Gonzaga commentedI just bought a windows computer and I couldn't possibly imagine this would be an issue. It's more like a bug, something went wrong.

Also: disabling GPU preview brings the pages back.
