[ID-4244288]Problem with Variable fonts - some glyphs are displayed with a lighter weight on changing axes.
Some variable fonts works as expected, but for some, the font displays at a lighter weight (perhaps regular?) when the weight is set for anything heavier than about 750. It appears that the heavier weight's metrics are used.
In my my limited test, the weight prints properly.
I'm on a 27-inch, iMac 2020, Mac OS 13.5.1, InD 19.
Examples:
The fix of the issue is now available in the InDesign 2024(v19.1.0.043) and above. We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

Still a problem!!
Version 19.0 here
Major bug when rendering PDF with variabale fonts such as: Syne and Helvetica Now VAR. -
Aris commented
Pre-release version 19.4.062 still broken!
Is there any official estimate on when will this be resolved?
I'm still using 18.5 because of this one font (Futura Now Var) that doesn't work.
It seems to me that the bug occurs only with Helvetica Now and Futura Now. Maybe they use some technology that is not correctly handled. -

Still broken in 19.3. Have to use 18 or previous designs completed blow out. Most noticeable with Helvetica Now VAR.

Pre-release version 19.4.030 - unusable FuturaNow issue still UNRESOLVED!
-
Aris commented
I installed today the pre-release version 19.4.030.
The issue with Futura Now Variable is STILL PRESENT.
So I'm still using InDesign 18 because I had been using Futura Now relatively often lately.
I also tried contacting Monotype's support but their response was really not what one would expect from a company that respects themselves!
Obviously the bug is in Adobe InDesign, but it definitely concerns Monotype's Futura Now and Helvetica Now (as I see from the previous comment and there are a lot of other variable fonts out there that are not affected. So there is some technical characteristic of these fonts that is involved in the bug. -

Still not corrected:
How long does it take for a function that worked perfectly in version 18 to finally work flawlessly again in version 19?
Tested with 19.3 and Helvetica Now Variable ... -

PLZ fix it

The pinned message says that the issue has been fixed in versions 19.1.x but this is not what I see. I have tested both 19.1.043 (now current ID 19 release) and the pre-release 19.2.0.43 and I still see the same problem with Futura Now Variable font. The sliders in InDesign still DO NOT work properly!
So I am still using v. 18 because I have used this font in several designs.
Needless to say it would be very useful to have some clarifications from Adobe. What is going on here? -

Just tested the fresh prerelease version 19.2 with Futura Now font and same problem is there!

I have tested up to the latest Pre-release version 19.1.0.43 and I see the bug has NOT been resolved. I test specifically with Futura Now variable font and I see the same behaviour with the sliders that do not work.

When is this getting a full release? It has been 20 days since this was in Prerelease.

Aris commented
New prerelease version 19.1.042 shows same problematic behaviour (bug) with Futura Now Variable for me.

Downloaded the latest build. The issue is NOT fixed.

@ravi The regression in 19.x was marked and remains so. It shows up in almost all variable fonts from all foundries.

Why do you falsely state here that the problem was "fixed"? I've tried many variable fonts with multiple axes in 19.1 prerelease and not a single one works. On Axis Praxis, these fonts work without a problem. So the fault is on Adobe's side.
Or is this a way to subtly remove OTvar font support from InDesign? Like what happened to Type 1 or Pantone colors?

Hi Ravi!
When will this prerelease build be pushed as an update?
Best regards, Gordon. -
Olli Meier commented
Hi Ravi, I tried it with InDesign Beta and it does not work either. Please see the attached screenshot. I am not able to download any other prerelease version, why I tired the 'Beta'.

As per my tests the issue HAS NOT BEEN FIXED in the Pre-release version 19.1.0.37 as I have already noted this in my previous comment.

This is still happening for me and makes using Indesign 2024 impossible for work, I don't understand how such a HUGE issue can be present in a new product like this MONTHS after it was released. Fix this or your product is completely useless for anyone who wants to use entire families of fonts on a layout program. how the **** this isn't fixed yet is crazy to me.

Same Problem here! If it helps your team talk with the guys from Illustrator 24, they have implemented variable fonts right.
Indesign without fonts is not usable at all.
