"Insufficient data for an image" error is shown on opening PDF in Acrobat
We are experiencing issues with exporting to PDF. Hi res PDF Compatibility Acrobat 7 (PDF 1.6).
The PDF is created normally, but when opening the PDF, it sometimes happens that the image is not displayed on one or more pages. The error message for this specific page is: ERROR: Insufficient data for an image.
We tried to solve this problem within our team. Eventually, we discovered that the issue did not occur for one of our colleagues. Further investigation revealed that this colleague was still using an older version of InDesign (18.3). The colleagues experiencing problems had automatic updates enabled and were working on the new version 18.4. I then uninstalled my 18.4 version and reverted back to 18.3, and the PDF exports started working as before without the error message.
I hope you can look into this and perhaps address it in the new InDesign version.
Best regards,
Mike Böger

This issue has been fixed in the latest release of InDesign - version 18.5 that has just been made available publicly.
Please download this update from Creative Cloud Desktop app to get the fix.

We have similar problem when outputting to our RIP from version 19. Downgraded to 18.3 and the problems are gone.
We see this in our RIP logs: Checksum mismatch in Flate compressed data detected

This issue is still present in versions 18.4, 18.5, and 19.0 as of 11/2/2023. I was unable to export an InDesign file to PDF successfully until downgrading to version 18.3. We plan on staying on version 18.3 indefinitely to resolve the issue (since 18.3 does not have this bug)

As of 9/8/2023 the object reference error is still an issue in version 18.5. Users must revert to the old 18.3 version in order to pass accessibility requirements. Please fix ASAP!

Installed InDesign Version 18.5 today and the PDF export profiles with zip compression are working fine now.

I have PDFs failing at a RIP when output from 18.4. Reverted back to 18.3 and they processed fine. The error from the RIP is: "Checksum mismatch in Flate compressed data detected."
Edit - Note that we do not compress any images when printing to PDF.

Hi guys,
We're still facing the same problem in 18.4 with 18.5 (Images attached below).
In this example, this page 85 went blank every time we ran it through the press when exported with 18.4 and 18.5, but got no problem with 18.3. This error also happened to 9 out of 10 book titles (exported with 18.4 and 18.5) that we print, which is a major issues for our production.
The confusion is, all the content in the black page is text base, no special fonts or images, not font issue or errors came up when we exported it out what so ever.
Cheers,

Accessibility and pdf/ua will fail as well on” unexpected error: object reference not set to an instance of an object” coming from 18.4!!

I'm a designer at a publisher where our books are printed in house with Xerox Nuvera 288 Presses.
We're recently facing issues where the press printed out the whole book, but have left a single page blank, randomly. For example: Page 85 in a 200-page-book came out blank, but the rest is alright.
After checking with our press technician and countless hours of troubleshooting, thinking that there are problems with our presses, we finally found out that PDFs that exported from 18.4 version have high tendency to corrupt in random manners. Each time, a different page in a different book went blank.
We finally reverted back to 18.3 and all the issues are fixed. I even reverted back to 18.1 and 18.2 to make sure our theory is right, and yes, 18.4 is the only version that gave us the issue.
We don't know what actually cause the corruption, or just the interaction issues between the PDF of 18.4 and the presses.
Cheers,

We are seeing the same problem with 18.4. On both Intel and M1 macs. Going back to 18.3 or earlier resolves the issue. This is a critical issue! Adobe!!!!

Ran some tests on past files that were created with this same PDF preset but were in version 18.3 at the time (no errors), now opening in 18.4 and trying create the same PDF gets an error.

Also experiencing this error message when creating PDFs out of version 18.4 (using a custom PDF preset from printer). Also backed down to 18.3 version and PDFs were again created fine without errors.
What I discovered is - in version 18.4 under the compression tab if ZIP is selected that's when the error occurs. Selecting any of the other options, PDFs again were created fine, no errors.
