Indesign 2021 (16.0) IDLK file do not lock
It is currently possible that two users are able to open the same Indesign file. I am working on a network volume via VPN and it was possible for my colleague to open the same file i was working with. The *.idlk file was generated but it seems that it would not be recognized from the other Indesign my colleague was using.
I tried to reproduce this issuue with Indesign 2020 and all worked fine as expected.
This is an enormous issue for collaboration with other colleagues at the same projects.
The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2022(v17.0.0.96). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application and click on the context menu on the top right and click on Check for App Updates.

Need a fix to this issue. Team of 4 working with ads on a shared server, often opening other peoples work to copy products to our own publications. We need the security of at least a notification, if not just removing the possibility to open already open documents. The «Read Only» is not enough, as you actually can make edits to it.

This is becoming a serious problem for our remote team, and it seems worse than it was at the outset. Sometimes, even when nobody is in a file, it remains stuck on 'Read Only' and we either need to create a duplicate file or go into a huge faff of opening and closing until it comes 'unstuck.' Not ideal when multiple people need to go in and out of files close to a deadline.

This problem still persist with Indesign 16.1.0.20 (Mac) – five moths after it was reported by xxFEXxx!!
To describe what happens for us with documents on shared file volumes (both smb and afp):
• User 1 opens an indd document. A lock file is created.
• User 2 opens the same document. The lock file disappears, and the document opens for user 2. However, the document is write protected. -

Very annoying problem when working in teams on a file server. Even more with all VPN and COVID-19 related homeworking. Original post dates from 5 months back. Still no fix available. Never had this in version 2020.

Same problem, also affecting macOS 10.14.6 and InDesign 16.1. We use Book files so that multiple users can see which files are open in the Book. This doesn't work anymore, InDesign Book doesn't recognise the files as open even with the lock files there. Has been working fine all the way back to CS3, come on Adobe, stop breaking stuff.

Yes we are working in a cloud environment and are having the same issue. Lock file appears not be working at all. My co-worker can open, save and overwrite the same file I have open. Hope this gets resolved soon!

Come on indesign team - the new update hasn't fixed this issue!

Having a warning dialog appear to inform a user that the document is already open by another user is a very important part of any workflow where multiple users access the same file. The "read only" status of such a file is subtle and easily missed. Please Adobe add a warning dialog for this situation!

Wir haben das gleiche Problem mit insgesamt acht Rechnern, verbunden über einen Server. Hoffen wir also das Beste.

I honestly don't know why it takes Adobe so long to fix this issue?? From what I've noticed the past years, quantity overrules quality ... very stupid bugs in new releases ... Again, ... Adobe ... fix. this!

We are having the same problems. All previous iterations of InDesign allowed users to experience a warning that a document was currently open. The latest version of Indd allows multiple users to open the same document over the network without such a warning. The initial user is the only one who can save the document, all others have a 'read only' message in the filename - not massively obvious when in a busy and deadline heavy workplace.

*Update: the temporary lock file was only the case with an .indd that had not been converted to 2021 format. After opening in 2021 then saving the .indd, lock file is now persistent. However, a major issue still exists. When I have a layout open, if anyone else has the same layout open [Read-Only] I cannot save my work. InDesign will not Save with the message that the file is open elsewhere. After all read-only copies are closed, I can save, but that seems to defeat the purpose of opening a file read-only. Any assistance will be much appreciated.
InDesign 16.0.1 on Mac OS 10.14.6 and 10.15.7 creates the lock file but the lock file only exists for the duration of the file open operation. As soon as the .indd file is fully open, the lock file is deleted. (see recording)
This is key to collaboration so we will likely revert to InDesign version 15. Thanks for your help fixing this issue! -

Our team is having the same issue. Hoping someone can shed some light on this and help us resolve.

Same problem here. Small team working off a server and InDesign is automatically generating read-only copies rather than an error message saying the file is locked.
