Drag-Duplicating using Alt/Opt key does not work if key is pressed after dragging
InDesign 2020 OPTION Duplicate is now broken, just like Photoshop has always been.
Don't make me commit to the duplicate before moving an item.
Sometimes I'll move a box, then realize I intended to duplicate it, so then I'll press OPTION... now I have to commit to it FIRST.
Fix this and stop breaking things!
While we’re still working to make the fix available for this issue, we suggest a workaround to overcome it.
Open Preferences > Interface. At the bottom of this dialog, change “Live Screen Drawing” to “Never”.
As mentioned above, we’re working to fix this issue.
Hope this helps.

Still broken, 16.0.1., Catalina.
still broken 15.1.2
I have 15.1.2 and still can't get option or alt drag duplicate to work.
It's got to be one of the most commonly used shortcuts for designers so I don't understand why it's brocken and wasn't picked up before release!
I've tried changing the Live Screen Drawing to never - didn't work. Also tried changing it to immediate (which I read somewhere else was a fix) - also didn't work.
Bloody frustrating - now thinking about uninstalling an re-installing a previous version (2019).
Has anyone else found a workaround that actually works?
I'm on a PC, Windows 10 OS, Indesign 15.1.2
UPDATE: I had a new computer and keyboard. For some reason the new keyboard was set-up for British configuration. I changed this to Australian preferences and voila - the alt / option drag is back! Hallelujah!!
Still NOT fixed in Version 15.1.1 on OSX 10.14.6 Mojave.
The way ALT has to be pressed BEFORE I select an object is totally nuts. Sorry. It used to work perfectly for decades, and it still works perfectly in any other application, even in Adobe apps like Illustrator, XD oder Photoshop. Why have you changed this intuitive behaviour to the bad? Years ago Adobe continously pointed out that all apps would work together seamlessly. Well, this lousy bug forces me to handle the exact same thing in InDesign in another way than in any other Adobe app. Really annoying. Please get this fixed soon!
using version 15.1.1 on macOS high sierra.
still not fixed! what's the deal?
thankfully the turning live drawing off workaround works!
Fixed in version 15.1 apparently.
Thank you :)
Thank God it's not just me. I thought I was going mad. Please fix this ASAP, please. It makes me realise how much I use this functionality without even thinking about it.
Thank you, Ravi, even though I would like it to work with live screen drawing, at least now I can copy items properly again. Shows someone cares. It would be really helpful if you can ask your team not to try and break things that have worked for over 20 years consistently. Thanks
😩 It's slowing me dowwwnnn...
Any progress on this bug?
please fix this asap!!
Please fix this, also drag with option key in Pages panel is not working properly anymore. IT USED TO WORK FINE!
Still happneing and super annoying I use drag copy like 50 times a day. Requires an extra key press everytime. (&)%£&)^@!(*$^£
CC 2020 has to be the buggiest update in recent years.
Command+Alt drag duplicate doesn't work in ID2020. Why break this short cut that, you know, I've only been using for about 10 YEARS? What's the reason? I know you can hold down Alt and then duplicate but there's a wait while the two arrows become one. It's a small thing but it's not intuitive and takes longer.
Please FIX THIS back to how it was!
Any feedback on this? We've had a few updates since then, but still no fix.
Please Please Fix it!!! - It is totaly annoying in quick production!!!
yes. Same thing happens here on a mac (high Sierra) with indesign 2020
Very annoying, please fix it back to how it was!
Id version 15.0: Duplication with ALT + mouse click on object not work propelry ... if you click and move an object and then press ALT, then the thing doesn't work as in previous versions ... Only if I press first ALT and then mouse click on object and move ...
Since I updated to Indesign 2020 a few days ago, alt + drag to copy objects no longer works.
