No keyboard focus on launch
InDesign 14.0.1.209, macOS Mojave 10.14.2
When launched and the following conditions hold, InDesign does not seem to have keyboard focus (i.e.., no keyboard shortcuts work):
- Show ‘Start’ Workspace When No Documents Are Open is unticked.
- The Control bar is open in the default workspace.
- The CC Libraries panel is either not in the default workspace or collapsed.
Note that conditions 2 and 3 are met by several of the standard workspace, for example both Advanced and Typography (but not Book, Essentials or Essentials Classic).
If you choose a menu item or click in an input field, the app gains keyboard focus. Otherwise you seem to be able to type endlessly without any discernible effect.
The issue has been fixed in the latest release of InDesign – InDesign 2021.
Please update to this new version of InDesign to get the fix.

Same thing happening here. Running a Mac 10.12.6, Indesign CC 2019. On a fresh start of Indesign, Command N will not start a new document, have to go to File > New Document. Once I've opened a document, Command N works for new documents, until I completely quit Indesign and start fresh again. I found today that on a fresh start of Indesign, if I immediately close indesign (not quit) and reopen, then Command N works until I completely quit and start fresh again.

If I have no document open command + N does not work. If I have a document open then command + N does work. I go to new document via the drop down menu it still shows command + N as a shortcut for new document it also shows that is still being the shortcut when I go to preferences and lookup shortcuts. “Show Start Workspace When No Documents Are Open” Is already turned off. This problem is intermittent.

NOT RESOLVED
For me (Mac OS 10.14.2 (18C54)) and ID 2019 14.0.1 this bug still holds true! When I start ID, Cmd-O nor Cmd-N work. I have to firstly do this manually, after that it works as promised.

Good afternoon,
I'm having an issue where any time I open an existing project, the keyboard stops registering in InDesign; that is, until I use the mouse to click a button in the UI somewhere (any button: drop shadow, text wrap, File Menu...literally anything except just clicking on the main pasteboard/page layout). For example, if I open a project and press the "T" keyboard shortcut to work on some text elements, nothing happens and I can't use the tool. However, if I then click with my mouse on any button (as described above), followed by unpressing that button (in the case of a drop shadow or other effect, I don't need it...I only click it in order to get the program to work as it should), and then try the "T" keyboard shortcut again, it works. It's the same issue if I double-click on a pre-existing text box in the project: I can't actually type anything until I do the process described above.
This issue applies to every keyboard shortcut that I know and/or use including (as examples, but not limited to) Ctrl+S for Save, Ctrl+Shift+S for Save As, Ctrl+N for New Document, "M" for the Rectangle tool, "A" for Direct Select, "G" for Gradients, etc.
Steps taken to resolve issue already: reset/deleted InDesign preferences, Google the issue to no avail, tested with alternate keyboard which resultied in the same issue.
Obviously this is not a workflow-destroying issue (lol), but it is obnoxious and would be lovely to sort out. Any help or thoughts you may have are greatly appreciated.
System Info (not sure if needed, but here it is just in case):
InDesign CC 2019 v14.0.1 x64
Windows 10 Professional 64-bit
32GB RAM
Intel Core i7-6700 Quad-Core @3.40Ghz
NVIDIA Quadro K420 2GB Graphics
1TB SSD
Keyboard is a stock Dell USB keyboard tested on another computer to determine there are no issues with it. -

When using Indesign the program occasionally loses focus and switches to focus on something else (possibly the Finder--I will need to watch next time). It becomes obvious when the pallets I have on a second monitor disappear, or when the main application window grays out in some areas. This happens on my MacBook Pro running Sierra as well as my coworker's MacBook Pro running High Sierra. Both of us have two external monitors connected via a hub and it's possible that is related. It also happens in Photoshop.

Dear Anasuiya,
Thank you for your help. I went through the steps. The preference setting for #3 was already turned off. I turned it on and the Cmd+N worked.

1. Using InDesign CC 2018 on a Mac.
2. Upon launching Indesign the command+n shortcut for a new file does not function. Only works when I have a file open.
3. Expected result would be for it to come to the new file options box.
4. Just makes the weird bumping sound and I have to go up to file and select new file. This keyboard shortcut works on Illustrator CC 2018 and Photoshop CC 2018 upon launching. Thank you!
