  1. Suppress Running Header on Chapter first page

Add a setting to Running Header to NOT DISPLAY if current page contains <chapterTitle> style.

This permits a document to reflow, changing pagination, while always suppressing the Running Header on the first page of a chapter. In this way, many documents would retain proper chapter start formatting without having to manually go through and apply a special Master Page (and remove the previous Master Page) whenever pagination changes.

  2. External Styles / Style Libraries to push Style updates dynamically and automatically to all documents.

Please develop some kind of External Style file format, that can be applied locally, and hopefully, via the cloud. But at least locally, PLEASE.

It is a crime that InDesign currently has NO WAY whatsoever to keep multiple documents styles synced. I run into this deeply frustrating problem all the time.

Currently, If I create a template file with some styles, and use that to create documents, and then If I update or refine paragraph styles, character styles, table styles, etc — there is no way for me to easily carry over those same styles to all other documents that…

  3. Creation of Table of Contents — Adjustable size of the interface window (width and height)

Creation of Table of Contents — Adjustable interface window (width and height)

When working in huge and very complex documents — with dozens and dozens of paragraph styles and very complex table of contents —, the limitations of the interface window are rather annoying. The window cannot namely be expanded to have a better view of the selected styles.

The number of visible styles is namely limited to four (see screenshot). And the width cannot be adjusted either.

It would thus be a considerable improvement if the window size could be customized in order to have a much better view…

  4. Option to apply object styles on document import.

We should have an option to apply object styles on import. There used to be a script that would do this but it isn't updated anymore. The ability to load a place brush and choose an object style for each page as i place them would be a tremendous time saving workflow for importing long documents. If we could somehow build that into "multi-page Importer" that would add pages to my document on import, too, it would be perfect.

  5. Separate the 'Merge Consecutive Borders and Shading' option into two

Currently in InDesign CC2019, if you have paragraph styles with the same 'Paragraph Border' and 'Paragraph Shading' settings, these will merge with consecutive paragraphs if the appropriately-named 'Merge Consecutive Borders and Shading with same Settings' options is set.

But what if you want to have consecutive paragraphs with the same border, but different shading, or vice versa? No options allow this.

I suggest that the 'Merge Consecutive Borders and Shading with same Settings' option is split into two; 'Merge Consecutive Borders with same Settings' under 'Paragraph Border', and 'Merge Consecutive Shading with same Settings' under 'Paragraph Shading'.

    Having the two…

  6. GREP: Add character style and paragraph style codes

Add GREP match code in Search/Replace for specific styles with something like:
    (CharacterStyle:[StyleName])

  7. Paragraph Rule Establish Length

Under Paragraph Rules, we have the option to increase the indent from the left or the right, it would be nice to just dictate overall length of size

  9. Consistent arrowhead styles

It would be helpful to have the same arrowhead options available for InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Sometimes I need to quickly create a legend in InDesign to match a diagram create in Illustrator, but the options for arrowhead styles are limited/different.

  10. Improve override & "mixed overrides" notice on paragraph styles: give useful info

If a paragraph has some override(s) in it that do not affect the entire paragraph, you'll see the little paragraph symbol at the bottom of the panel light up. This tells you there's an override. No + sign will appear next to the paragraph style name, though, unless the cursor happens to be in text that has the override. For example, if one word is in italics but your cursor is elsewhere in the paragraph, you don't have any way to know what the override is. If you select the entire paragraph, the + appears, but when you hover over…

  11. Ad the possibility to have Paragraph Style add a break before or after

In many cases, I want a break after or before a Paragraph with a certain style. e.g.: a chapter heading often needs a Page Break before.
How convenient would it be when this is integrated in a Paragraph Style!

  14. Easy drag and drop to base one text style on another

I would love for an easy drag and drop to base one text style on another in the paragraph and character style palettes. The idea is to drag a paragraph style (para) that you want to base on and drop onto another style (parafirst or paralast). I work on book designs with lots and lots of style tags. It will save designers so much time to do it all in the palettes instead of opening up each style and scroll through the style list every time.

In addition, similar to how we apply parent/master pages to pages, it’d…

  15. Ability to create and edit Object styles in the Properties panel

Trying to lessen dependence on existing panels in an attempt to speed up workflow. So if I could create and edit full Object styles by accessing that option—similar to Para and Character styles on Properties panel, that would be great. I know the Properties panel is a work in progress, so hoping this may appear sometime in the not-to-distant future

  16. Map tags to Object Styles

It would be great to map tags to not only paragraph and table styles, but also to object styles. Paragraph styles have some limitations wich object styles don't have.

  17. Possibility of defining several alternative Font Styles in one Character Style

Possibility of defining several alternative Font Styles in one Character Style.

    E.g. Character Style: Italic
Font Style: Regular Italic OR RegularItalic OR Italic OR ItalicRegular OR Italic Regular

Currently working with two families of fonts, one of which has italic defined as Italic and the other as Regular Italic, this is impossible. You have to define two character styles and search the whole text.

  18. Add a feature that allows you to predefine paragraph style spacing based on which style comes before or after it

I have set up some paragraph styles in my InDesign document that have space-before and space-after set on them. Some of the styles are for headers. When the headers precede a regular paragraph, I want the space to be there, but when they precede another header, I want there to be less space. In web development, I can write rules in CSS that say things like this:

    p { margin-top:10px; }
    h2 + p { margin-top:5px }

I am able to make the margin-top narrower on a <p> tag that is immediately preceded by an <h2> tag, but otherwise, it's…

Next to Tint I naturally looked for opacity, my thought was if I can change tint I can change opacity as well. Thanks.

  20. Variables in formatting

Instead of using absolute values in formatting dialogues, let us define and use variables.

I often work in long documents and have dozens of styles. Using the leading for my body copy as a reference many other formatting options will use the same value or fractions or multiples of that value. Body copy might use 14 point leading with 7 points of space between paragraphs. Subheads might have an extra 7 points above. Main heads might use 21 point or 28 point leading. Bullets might use 14 points for the indent. If I need to change my leading I need…
