This would be very helpful to my workflow, I'm constantly having to switch between the two. I'll try to centre something to the page only to have it do nothing because it's set to "Align to Selection" so I have to manually toggle it to "Align to Page". Then later I'll try to evenly distribute a selection of objects only to have them also align to the edges of the page. So I'll have to undo, switch it back to "Align to Selection", then try again.
It would make a lot more sense if it switched settings relative to what you had selected. Sure, it would probably get it wrong sometimes, but it would be correct a lot more often than it is now.
