The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2026(v21.0.1.006). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application, click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

Please help us with answers to the below queries:
1. OS version of the machine where issue is reproducible.
2.Are the files opened simultaneously by more than one user?
3. Does the same file which is opened as Read Only in Id 14.0.2, when opened in Id 14.0.1 opens fine?
4. Does remounting the SMB drive fixes the issue?

We've just released InDesign 17.2.1 version which addresses this issue.
Please update to this latest version using Creative Cloud Desktop application.
In case the fix does not work immediately for you, please try the following:
1) Quit InDesign.
2) Delete the following:
on Mac:
/Users/[yourname]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
/Users/[yourname]/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
on Win:
C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign
C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign
Relaunch InDesign & see if it works properly now.

We have the same Problem. Disabling the Sophos Rasomware setting with MacOS 12.4 only makes it rarer. If you reopen the file, usually it is not read-only any more.
I suppose Indesign has a very special way of opening files, since we have no problems with other applications.
