Adobe InDesign opening files as read-only
I am using InDesign v 16.2.1 on a MacBook Pro (Intel) running Big Sur (11.3.1) and connected to a file server on the network via the SMB protocol. Also I have Sophos Endpoint Protection installed. When attempting to open a file on the file server, InDesign opens it in read-only mode. If I attempt to do the same with Sophos turned off, the file opens read-write. It appears that other InDesign/Sophos/Mac customers have experienced the same issue:
I am formally requesting a resolution to this issue, as it seems this is a common problem for people working on network-attached storage.

there's another card that says this has been fixed and addressed. For the record, this still pops up many versions later. Please look at it again, Adobe!

This issue is still present in InDesign 2024 and macOS Sonoma. It's seriously my biggest workflow hurdle because I have to open my InDesign files 10-20+ times before they are no longer read-only. This is an InDesign + SMB issue, I don't have this problem with any other Adobe software.

AFAIK this issue is nothing to do with Sophos. I use Windows Defender and don't have any fancy plugins.

Although Adobe claims to have fixed the Read Only file save issue, it is still not fixed. I am using a Windows 11 64-bit machine with 2TB of disk, plus 1GB scratch disk, 64GB RAM etc. This has been happening since the upgrade to 18.5. It is ruining my workflow, which has become a workslow, on work to meet a vital customer deadline. I cannot over-emphasize how vital it is for you to fix this issue. I have tried on a different machine, using the same spec and the issue persists. I have also tried working locally instead of on Dropbox and the issue persists. It is the same using InDesign Beta and the issue persists. I have also tried all the various recommended fixes including changing the Windows Explorer view. I thought maybe it was because I had worked on a file across editions of InDesign but nope, it's not that: I created a new native InDesign file and the Read Only issue started happening within 10 seconds. Please reach out and help me ASAP.

I now have the same problem of opening InDesign shared files into 'read-only'. This is a recent occurrance after some server work a few days ago (not sure what was done to server). I'm now connected via SMB protocol (it used to be afp). This is a pain as I'm part of a work group and now unable to make changes to jointly accessed work. I must now re-save files as a 'copy', so we'll have multiple copies of jobs floating about. I've alerted my IT department.

We have the same Problem. Disabling the Sophos Rasomware setting with MacOS 12.4 only makes it rarer. If you reopen the file, usually it is not read-only any more.
I suppose Indesign has a very special way of opening files, since we have no problems with other applications.

I'm not sure if Adobe fixed it or if it was my recent upgrade to MacOS Monterey (12.0.1), but the issue appears to have been resolved for me. No other changes have been made to my machine. I hope this helps someone!

Disabling ransomware protection in Sophos Endpoint on the Mac immediately fixed this issue for me. It's just a goofy little toggle switch causing all this bother.

Hi Everyone,
Did you get anywhere with this? This thread suggests Sophos are pointing their finger at Adobe and their repeated failures to handle SMB protocols properly:

Hi, I'm currently experiencing this same issue with Sophos and accessing files on our NAS. Is there an update or a fix for this? (Uninstalling Sophos is not an option)

I have suffered from the same problem, without finding solutions on the web. Today I've uninstalled Sophos, restarted the Mac and the problem was solved. Now I need another antivirus.

Do you use Sophos protection?
There is an issue with the Sophos Rasomware setting. If you switch this off in your account on the browser NAS should be fine with ID files. I am in coomunication with Sophos Level 2 tech staff who have just esculated this further.
I am just ID user and I have got further with this than Adobe!
