I thought I had lost my mind. I've been trying to select my content using the BLACK arrow as I've done since I started using Adobe products in 1997 and it was acting like the direct selection arrow. So I restarted thinking it just needed reset. When I returned the same thing happened. So I hovered only to find them named 'incorrectly' - the black arrow is now "direct selection" and white "selection". I am truly speechless like everyone else, no doubt.

Thinking of what Ravi Kiran wrote - 'hollow' vs black and white - I went in and change my color theme to white and voila! They appeared correct. This only added to my frustration. My distain for a light gray or white UI is great, especially after being in dark mode for so long. But, until this is fixed (if), I shall use the light colors in order to maintain my efficiency.

This resolution is incorrect and the issue needs more attention. I am now using the key commands instead of choosing the selection tools from the toolbar to eliminate the confusion. No UI designer would recommend different icons for the same tool - regardless of chosen theme. Please fix this issue before it gets passed on to the next update.

I keep clicking on the wrong tool and it's driving me absolutely bonkers. Please fix it or give us the option to revert it in the preferences menu.

It seems like an oversight that Adobe refuses to admit is a mistake on their part.

I understand that this is intentional for dark mode feature from Adobe design team perspective.... From user perspective I wouldn't want these to change like this regardless of what mode my system is in I want it to stay intuitive to what I'm used to. It's really confusing and frustrating.

I'm having this issue too and was told it's now the 'STANDARD' by support and they couldn't do anything about it. Totally ridiculous if it is. The UX is terrible, Abode have dropped the ball in a BIG way on this one. Covering their ass. They need to fix this ridiculous error. It's not an update.

RESOLVED???? Are you kidding me? Your explanation is as tone deaf to users as your virtue signaling "master" pages change, and you forcing users to save files in Adobe Cloud to use your collaborative features. It really reminds me of when the Photoshop team changed the transform tool to proportionally constrain by default instead of using the shift key when resizing (like every other Adobe program/version since it's beginning). Users hated it and they had to add a "Legacy" option in the preferences, but it should have never been changed in the first place. You guys are part of the Adobe family, and when you decide to make a change without considering how inconsistent it is with other programs in the suite or how experienced users have used the tools for years upon years, it shows how little you consider ACTUAL users in your UX design. It's like you guys are just making changes to say that you did something in this release. These little cosmetic and foundational tool changes don't need tweaking. Please just work on some new features and improve the stability of what you have, but these nonsensical changes are frustrating to your long time users.

WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE THESE AROUND? They remain as they always were in Illustrator, but you swap the icons in InDesign? This is SO CONFUSING!

Agree with the "black arrow / white arrow" comment being how users navigate these tools over "filled / hollow." The new change is very confusing. The tools should be consistently displayed across the applications and having a different version is very disruptive to productivity across the applications.

I also have found the "selection" and "direct selection" tool icons in the 2022 version of InDesign to be confusing as their appearance is no longer consistent with the look of the same icons in other CC apps. Please see the image below to compare the tool icons in the 2022 versions of InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop with each user interface being set to the Medium Dark setting. Is it possible to have the "selection" and "direct selection" tool icons returned to their state as they were in previous versions of InDesign to match the appearance of the same tool icons in other CC apps?

Thanks to your explaination, I understand what you aimed to achieve, but...
-the mouse pointers still are filled black or filled white (which is inverse to how the buttons are shown in dark/medium dark theme) and not "filled" and "hollow". No other two tools use the same icon, one dark/filled, one light/hollow. Therefore, other tools' buttons and pointers being inversed doesn't cause confusion.
-Illustrator, belonging to the same product family, still displays both tool buttons the way they used to be, amplifying the inconsistency when working with both.

In my experience, selection/direct selection are often referred to as "black arrow" and "white arrow", because that is what they are. Only now the buttons don't match ^^
