There are many internal as well as external factors that can cause the InDesign application to crash/freeze/hang.
A few workarounds are listed at https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/kb/crash-on-launch.html.
We would recommend you to upgrade to latest version as it is more robust.
If you still face this issue even after updating, please submit the crash report to us. (Guidelines to submit crash are available at https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/submit-crash-reports.html)

The 2021 version of inDesign is for me, like for the user above, the buggiest, most crash-prone ever. It crashes on startup, AFTER I quit, during work, in between work, when my Mac wakes... I "love" when Adobe issues "stability improvements". What? Are they trying to catch up to the worse of the now semi-defunct Quark Express racket? I am so disappointed with this version that lately only generates hours of wasted time. Oh, yes, the Suggestions pop up that shows up after each crash: Cute ...but what's the point of it???

Trouble with: InDesign CC2021 (16.0, 16.0.1, 16.1)
User since: InDesign 1.5I have had perpetual failure to launch on one machine in all versions of CC2021 (16.0) through the February 16.1 update unless I replace plugplugowl.dll with a copy from CC2020 (15._). I tried using a copy of the .dll from a functional install of 16 on another machine but it did not solve the issue.
I found only a few references from back in 2018 after quite a bit of work to figure out what was happening. Those were marked as up as being fixed in an update. No 2020 or newer references.
Also, I am not sure if this is related, but the workspaces often defaults to "essentials" randomly when I open a document. AND there is no CC library panel??
Original install I had it migrate the CC2020 settings. That failed to launch so I did an uninstall and reinstall without migrating settings and that had no effect.
After review of the "Fixed Issues" in the 16.1 update I was hopeful that this might have been fixed but with the update came with a new .dll file and launch crashed until I put the old .dll file back in.
I hope this is something there is a fix for.
Looking forward to any feedback.Thank you!

I bought a brand new macbook air, 2020, with Apple M1 processor, Big sur. Every works ok, only indesign keeps crashing or almost crashing (taking 5 minutes or so standstill to be able to work further). Everything is up to date. What to do?

Hello,
I keep having issues with Indesign (2019 and 2021 version, respectively on Mac Catalina and Mac BigSur) that continuously closes and will not reopen all files. I have reset the preferences of indesign through the commands listed on the help center and I have also cleared the caches in the recovery folder of Indesign.I have been in contact yesterday with the live support (where the operator had the control over my computer) in the chat, but also the operator could not fix this issue. This problem however does not occur on a windows computer. This is quite an urgent problem, as I have my entire thesis on this particular file, and I'm due to graduate in a month's time. -

I'm working in Windows 10, Adobe InDesign version 16. I only recently updated to this version and it is unusable. At first it allowed me to open an *.indd file, but then refused to open another until I rebooted. I did this multiple times with a group of files that I need to complete. After a day of this, now InDesign 16 crashes without ever opening whether I try to open it on its own or through clicking on an *.indd file. I then removed it and installed version 15.1.3, but when I attempt to open my files, it says they were modified with v16 and it has to convert them to an older version. I click Convert, and it just sits there and never resolves. I am truly screwed in that I cannot open my files in either version now. I have found numerous complaints online about this very issue, but Adobe continues to put this update on Creative Cloud and encourages users to download it. We need real solutions now.

Cannot seem to get InDesign to open at all since buying new MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7. It opens normally at first, then get the rainbow spinning wheel of death and have to force quit. Same thing happens in InDesign 2019. Have trashed preferences, repaired permissions, granted global permissions for all of Adobe's support folders, used Adobe Cleaner to remove all Adobe files and reinstalled everything from scratch. Spent an hour with Adobe tech support this morning and he could not get this problem fixed. Am very open to suggestions! What would be the next step?

InDesign 16.0Absolutely impossible to work. Seems like font compatibility, but maybe something else entirely. It opens the file, very painfully slow, checking for a while, finally clearing preflight to green. Then no matter what tool is used it changes to the not responding mode. Multiple updates, clearing preferences, etc. didn't help. Extremely frustrating.

InDesign freezes. I'm just working, and it freeze. Or sometimes it happens when I open another window, and then I can't back to Adobe Indesign, I have to force the program to close.

InDesign freezes, then stops responding when I open more than one document at a time. I'm running version 15.1.1 on Windows 10 x 64 Enterprise with Xeon processor, 32 G ram, and discrete graphics.
Task manager shows multiple instances of Adobe CEP HTML engine in the drop down of the InDesign task.
I need to be able to have more than one Indesign file open at a time without crashing the computer, so your help is appreciated.
