Major System Font Issue!
WHAT THE FONT!?!
Our publishing company recently ran the InDesign update (to 15.0.2) and have discovered some major font issues. I have narrowed it down to InDesign 15.0.2, macOS Catalina 10.15.3, and Suitcase Fusion 21.0.0. I actually don't think Suitcase has too much to do with this, because the problem occurred after the InDesign update, but it's our font management software so I'm including it. Basically it appears system fonts have become problematic with InDesign. Packaged files are suddenly showing up with lots of the dreaded pink. I have tested about everything I can. I even created some very simple type only files that are having system font issues as well. Sometimes the document will open ok and the fonts will appear fine. Then when I go to export, the system fonts turn pink. Sometimes the file can't open the fonts at all and they start out and remain highlighted pink. Other times it will open but them shut off a few seconds later. It's only happening with system fonts. I have included screen shots for reference. I hope this issue can be fixed asap because it's font chaos over here! Thank you.
The fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign – version 16.1
Please update to this version to get the fix.

My fonts are just disappearing as I am using them in InDesign 2021. These are all fonts downloaded from Adobe. I'll type something, change it to the font I want, go to another line to change that font and the first line simply disappears. This is happening with multiple fonts. Anyone have a solution?

I'm having same issues with Sonata Font and the new 2021 InDesign update. Please help. The font is listed as being there but the characters are not showing. PDF export is failing.

I have upgraded to Indesign 2021 but the problem persists. Is there anything I can do?

Existing font (Garamond Premier Medium) missing in InDesign 2021 Middle Eastern (Windows):
It's there in InDesign 2020, And activating it again from Adobe Fonts doesn't fix it. -

I've been able to work around the Avenir issue (Avenir.ttc) by removing it from the Document fonts folder. I just place it outside (at the top level). Reopen the InDesign file and the conflict is bypassed. I don't use any font manager (especially one that requires a network like Universal Type Client). I just make sure the Document fonts folder is at the same level as the InDesign file. So my font activation is very local. My work around has helped me with any .ttc font found inside the the Document fonts folder. Seems like a system font conflict occurs specifically with ttc. fonts.

I'm in InDesign 15.1.2, and running Catalina (10.15.7). I have several projects that suddenly will not load certain fonts. Background tasks runs trying to load the fonts, but no luck. I have tried restarting, opening the document several times, placing a pdf with of the document (when the fonts were loading normally) nothing works. I need a solution!

Wow- I came here HOPING this problem had been resolved - only to see that another user was still having issues as recently as 3 days ago - so I guess that means it STILL has not been fixed. REALLY?! As Adam said below: "The high priced subscription model is supposed to make the programs run better NOT TO RELEASE BROKEN SOFTWARE TO BE WORKED ON! I am losing faith in Adobe period!"
If I had an alternative to this Adobe program I would be using it. -

Still having issues. Oct 12, 2020. Lots of wasted time. Adobe, please fix.Avenir is a big problem. Open a file, test is all messed up. Sometimes closing and reopening works. Sometimes it takes 3-4 tries. This is the 15.0.3 update.

Still working on this or NO. Because it sure seems like 6/mo. should be enough time. For a program that deals mainly with fonts to have issues with fonts is unacceptable. I have been wasting more and more time finding workarounds with adobe then any professional should have to. The high priced subscription model is supposed to make the programs run better NOT TO RELEASE BROKEN SOFTWARE TO BE WORKED ON! I am losing faith in Adobe period!

Dear Ravi, your reply above dates back to three months ago, and I've just come across the same issue, with fonts not only being recognised by InDesign 15.1.2, but also certain replacement fonts not working – the pink bits of tofu remain impervious to any attempt at substitution. This really is most frustrating. Any ideas? Thx!

Does anyone having this issue notice that the missing fonts magically rectify when you close the document and immediately open it again? For some reason, this is the only workaround for me that actually works. Hopefully it'll be helpful to some of you.

This sounds similar to the issue I reported back in July. We rely on Font Book, not Suitcase Fusion though. Very frustrating that Font issues in InDesign have been so problematic that our production dept is sticking with version 15.0 until a definitive fix has been found.

My fonts now randomly show as missing in InDesign when I open a document. First there was only one font in one document that caused problems. Now there are three more. It's like a virus spreading. Although it probably isn't.
The missing fonts can be substituted in the dialog box for the exact same fonts. Then everything is fine for a while. I don't use Suitcase or any plugins. The last one just now was Adobe Garamond Pro regular.

Description of font issue:
Document that had been working for 2 weeks suddenly had font issues. Indesign reported fonts as inactive/missing although FontExplorer reported the fonts as open. After quitting InDesign and even restarting computer problem persisted. Checked Find Fonts in Indesign and found that in the list of fonts, font names had been changed. For example: font in use was Avenir Next Com Regular but InDesign was describing the missing font as Avenir Next Com 55. Most fonts in use of a regular weight were listed in the find/replace fonts menu as "55" rather than Regular. Had to go thru and replace all the problem fonts.

I started dealing with this after recently updating. The file in question had been packaged, and the .indd was an issue. The .idml worked fine. Not sure if once the issue rears its head you can still save back as .idml to fix, but it is certainly worth a try if you won't lose anything too important functionality-wise.
(Another simple solution would be using different font too, if able... but sounds like many, many fonts are being affected here and some of your jobs are way bigger than mine). Hopefully we will hear of a solution from Adobe very soon.

I have the same issue with Univers Next Pro, where particular weights are not recognised and do not come up in Font finder despite being activated. This is a long standing problem I've been working around for months but is costing me an huge amount of time as this is the corporate font of my biggest client.

I have the same problem - with Avenir (TrueType). It is was packaged into the Document Fonts folder. Sometimes it opens with the Indesign file, sometimes opening the font in Suitcase will fix it, often opening another Indesign file will make the font disappear. This is a major issue and affects how quickly I can get my work done.
