Type tool still deselects itself InDD 15.0.1
The bug has been already reported, it's been claimed to be fixed in 14.0.1, but actually still persists and never was corrected.
Typing "T" just selects the type tool very briefly, then changes back to the previous tool. Clicking inside a text frame has the same result, even if you get to select some part of the text, it just changes back tot he previous tool in most of the cases. The only way to get it work, is to select the tool in the sidebar, however even there it takes several seconds to become active.
Using InDD 15.0.1 on a Mac Pro, MacOS 10.13
The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2022(v17.0.0.96). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application and click on the context menu on the top right and click on Check for App Updates.

Just updated to 2020 in hope that it would be fixed. Has any progression been made on this?

I'm in 14.0.3. I just installed the suite on a new Mac. I've been using Adobe since 1991. This is putting a serious hitch in my giddyup. I just want my type tool to work using the keystroke I've been using for 25 years! What will it take to get this fixed?

I have the same issue in version 14.0.3. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Indesign.
The only workaround that works for me is what @Mhast suggested, turning off the Control bar. Very frustrating as I frequently use the Control bar.

Mine was working for a while but is now back to not working again. This is so insanely frustrating.

This is still happening to me. Definitely not fixed. I tried @Mhast's hack. Deactivating the control panel fixes the issue but I need the control panel!

Agree with Erica this is happening WAY more than in 14.0.1. I've been experiencing this issue for over 6 months now and had some hacks that are no longer working (restarting my computer, selecting the type tool manually once etc). Now the only trick that works is hiding the tool bar, which contains all the type properties that I need when using the type tool in the first place. Please fix this once and for all. I rely on short cuts and its slowing down my process immensely.

Great - thank you!

Appears to be related to the Control Bar (Ctrl-Alt-6) having the Character / Character Fonts selected in the Customize Control Panel option set (which is on be default, of course). If you deselect that then using the (T) keyboard shortcut doesn't switch back to the Selection Tool (V) when you click with it - it operates as you'd expect.
Interestingly the same field being operable in the Properties panel doesn't produce the same problem, just on the traditional Control panel.

Type Tool still deselects itself
As per - https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/35753107-type-tool-deselects-itself - which is incorrectly marked as "Fixed".

This happens with so many tools! Also experiencing major lag when selecting text tool.
I've been using Adobe software for over 30 years. IT HAS NEVER BEEN THIS BAD - PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, INDESIGN. Getting worse, not better.
Running latest OS on 2012 iMac (don't even think of telling me it's my fault for not buying a newer computer - I have the same problems on a 3-year old iMac - make sure your software is backward-compatible for a good 10 years, FFS)
I'm getting tired of submitting these bug reports on a variety of issues.
