Text margins don't change when master pages are applied
Version: InDesign CC2019
Steps to reproduce: Apply a new Master page, with different margins, to a document page with text frame
Expected result: Text frame should resize to fit the new margins of the master page (as before with Layout Adjustment enabled)
Actual result: Page margins change but text frame stays the same. Useless! I have to manually adjust the text block to fit the new margins.
I work in book publishing. When laying out a book, it's often necessary to make changes to the margins of certain pages, either to accommodate the dropped opening of a chapter, or to set a spread a line long or short to avoid unsightly widows. I do this by applying a master page to adjust the margins accordingly. Up until now (assuming Layout Adjustment was enabled), the text frame margins would adjust to match the new master page margins. But in InDesign 2019, Enable Layout Adjustment is gone, and though the page margins change properly, the text frame doesn't change, and I have to manually drag it into shape. This is a big time-waste and a PITA. I've tried fiddling with all the new settings, and nothing restores the old behavior. Someone suggested that creating the document with "Primary Text Frame" enabled would make things work properly, but no luck.

You can actually get the text to refit to the new margins but not when you change the number of columns.

There seems to be no logical reason why the Enable Layout Adjustment feature was dropped from CC 2019. Adjust Layout is a nightmare when working on documents (books) with hundreds of pages. Adobe: Please make this change back to Enable Layout Adjustment!

Just chiming in that this is a major problem for me. I just don't have time to do without that feature— had to save my project as an idml and go back to cc 2017 to finish the job. WHEN is Adobe going to fix this?

SO angry about this. I need 2018 and can't download it because I skipped from 2017.
I daily work in books and have to apply masters constantly to adjust margins! -

As someone who designs a lot of books that require different master pages to be applied later in the process, this is a very debilitating bug. I do hope it gets resolved soon, as it's adding many additional and unnecessary hours to my workflow.

I agree that this is a huge issue, especially for people who need to apply multiple types of master pages across long documents. It's very frustrating needing to setup and always use a primary text frame.

Hi - not sure if this is the same issue, but maybe I can bring some clarity. In 2018, I used to be able to set a text box to the size of the margins, and when i changed the margin size, the text box would shrink/grow to fit automatically.
Great feature, as I can place large word docs into indesign, then use master slides with varying margin settings to swap between the layout of text boxes. For example, I might have a master slide with margins of 6p0 on all sides, and another with 2 columns. When I swapped the master, the text boxes would switch to the margin layout - saving hours of time fiddling with layouts.
This no longer happens - bug? intentional?

Hello, everybody,
the new behavior unfortunately has nothing to do with automatic layout adjustment anymore. So I had to install the previous ID version again to finish my project. In my eyes there is an urgent need for improvement.Regards,

Hi Raphaël,
me too. It's either a bug or an unfinished feature. The problem is not only with page margins. Also with number of columns and gap between columns.
An applied master in CC 2018.1 could also govern this. Not more with CC 2019 14.0.0.130.Also see:
