crash on create merged document
Indesign 2018 cc on mac os 10.12.6, crash on "create merged document" in data merge menu if more than approx 100 records in data file . "export to pdf" works. We have some files that need editing after merge so need this to work. Worked before 2018 update on same files that are causing crashes now. Seems to crash at point its going from a temp file to creating the finished file after the merge has happened. Tries unsucessfully to "recover" a temp file on startup after crash. Is entirely repeatable. System and user usage together never goes above 60% in activity monitor. 2012 Imac with maxed ram and lots of empty hd space.

still hapenning in 2022. My fix was to set the number of records when creating the merged doc. If you don't do that, for some reason InD considers the thousands of rows on the spreadsheet and that is what I think causes InD to crash. Once you set the range of records 1-x problem solved!

Hello Everyone,
This issue was still happening to me in version 15.1.1 but what I did to remedy the issue was to delete all the hyperlinks in my document and retag. I know it's not fun to retag but this definitely worked! At some point, something must've gotten corrupted (double tagging might be the culprit).
I hope this helps! -

I tried creating a merged document but it just makes my computer super slow and indesign gets stuck. Is this issue happening again to other people?
I just tried it on two different computers, same issue.

Hi, I'm having this issue too, on Windows 10, InDesign 15.0.1.
I've tried clearing preferences and cache, and removing spaces from my .csv file names. Any other suggestions would be very welcome!

This keeps being a problem for me, I have now discovered though that (at least sometimes) the problem seems solved (for a moment) when you create a whole new document, either paste, or otherwise recreate the table (or whatever) in which you want to data merge. I think you should not yet put it in a new master page, but just on the first page you get in front of you and do the whole thing again. Give it a try. Its a hassle for sure, but it makes it a bit better, next time I'll immediately do / try that.

Issue is not fixed.
I'm using Data Merge: multiple records. Some files keep making Indesign 15.01 (2020) crash, some don't, even some very uncomplicated ones crash, I can't find the reason. Removing the spaces out of the filename doesn't help me.
The preview does work though, when I press OK Indesign sometimes points out I'm missing some photo's (which usually is not a problem) and then when I press continue it crashes. Also happend in 15.0 and Indesign 2019...
Once in a while it doesn't crash but gives me a weird result.

Ravi Kiran - This issue is resolved. After removing the spaces out of the file name, I was able to merge the csv file into InDesign.

This issue is not fix. Every time I merge a csv document into InDesign 2020, it crashes.

Chiming in - I just had this problem multiple times in a row with a merged document using 24 records. Trashing my preferences seems to have solved it, as recommended by Ravi Kiran's comment in January. (I am already using the most current CC release 14.0.2)
I also sent the file and resources to a coworker, who did not experience any issues with the data merge.

Same thing happened to me, when I tried to select CSV file. I cleared preferences & cache and still not working. Very frustrating. Am on the latest version. What to do? I sent error report.

Indesign 2019 v14.0.1 still crashes when trying to data merge with more than 100 records. I'm using a 2017 iMac 8gb memory 3.4Ghz running Mojave 10.14.3. To be able to complete this job I have used the same file in indesign 2018 v13.1 on older iMac running 10.13.6 High Sierra and it worked perfectly.
Please let me know how I can fix this issue!!
