Allow placement of AI files without PDF compatability.
Currently, with a workflow that includes placing AI file into indesign, the AI files must be saved with PDF compatability turned on. This not only embeds all linked assets inside the AI file, but duplicates all the artwork as well making the file size of the saved AI file much much larger.
This request is to allow INDD to place native AI files without an embedded PDF copy of all the artwork and without links embedded. If we could do this, we'd literally save half our storage space if not more due to all the duplication of links and artwork happening now.

Showing open book files on Start workspace
Situation now:
When opening a book file Indesign adds a book panel showing all contained documents. You can then open documents through this panel. I usually dock the panel to the right with my other panels to keep the workspace tight and clean. But now the tricky part:
When I close all documents I've set Indesign to return to the Start workspace. This shift to another workspace makes the book panel disappear as well (since it is docked with the other panels). I have to go to the menus to find the panel again.
I guess the reason for this behaviour is because the book panel is sort of conditional: it only appears when you have opened a book file.Solution:
If it could be a fixed panel (showing even when no book file is open) we could somehow add it to the Start workspace and open another document through that panel.Or add the currently open files to the Start workspace?

Clear the pasteboard
I'd love a command that would delete all the extraneous stuff that ends up on the pasteboard. It would be especially helpful in packaging for print.

Allow incopy to access object states
It would be perfect if incopy could access and change all object states content. I do not understand why this is not possible today.

Add a conditional text checkbox in eyedropper settings
As in topic. It would be much easier to allow condition to be applied with eyedropper tool

Print as mockup
All designers print or export their designs with a stroke that defines the paper size. That stroke could be replaced by a fill that simulate a certain paper colour (prefs defined) and a short subtile dropshadow.
It would be great to have in the print/export dialogbox a function that could do that for you, simulate a certain paper colour for the background and a dropshadow. Print as Mockup function4 votes -

XML Workflow – InDesign need to improve much
We're facing huge difficulties in InDesign while handling the XML structure in InDesign, but it's good in FrameMaker. After importing the XML files in InDesign, no control is available in InDesign to validate the XML coding structure, also allowing the users to easily tamper the XML coding. Due to this limitation, XML extracting from InDesign are not actually correct and users need to fine-tune the same and spending huge time to correct. So current XML features to be improved much.

Background tasks and glyphs panel width matching other panels
I would love to be able to incorporate the Background tasks and glyphs panel width to my other panels.
These panels are too wide and so cannot be included in my sidebar

I want to be able alter the standard prefs for effects
I am in CC2018 now and thought to change presets for once and for all; mainly because every time I want to give an object an outer glow I have to change the settings every time.
It seems impossible to change the random settings.
Very annoying!4 votes -
Allow saving to previous version format
I upgraded from CC2017 to CC2018 (hoping it would fix some issues I've submitted elsewhere) not realizing that my co-workers who are still on CC2017 would then not be able to open my .indd files. Saving as .idml is a really, really suboptimal solution. I know other software I've had allows you to save in previous versions' formats; why can't you? Also, it would have been nice to know this would happen before I upgraded...

Add a "Dropword" feature
A “dropword” is like a drop cap, but instead of making one or more characters large, it makes a space for the letter or word, but leaves the word a normal size:

Delete unused-variables
Unfortunately the UI- and the Handling of variables is quiet different to all other menues and function in InDesign. And so theres still no way to delete "unused" variables.
While handling an document over several years - e.g. a typical product-catalog or price list - the variables-list grows from year to year as there are every year new products which need a variable. After some years it is not practical to have a list with 500 variables but only 100 are used.
It would be very appreciated if the complete handling of variables could be like in all other menues.4 votes -
Previously saved versions of a document
It would be very helpfull if InDesign stored a log of previously saved versions of one particualr document. For example, if I have worked on a file for multiple weeks and oversaved all of the changes that were made to the document, but then suddenly the client wanted to have some of the changes undone I could easily find the version where those changes hadn't been done. That would save the hassle of saving multiple documents or whole buch of additional pages inside the document.

Limiting table row height limit
Hi, I always encounter this in InDesign. The table row has height limit and would not allow me to adjust it further for longer contents. My workaround is to use shape made as a content holder. (see attached file)

cross references: character styles and case
At present, a cross reference takes its case from the destination. If I have used small caps for the destination style, but am referencing it from within text, I want to capitalise the term, but the cross reference takes its case from the destination, not the typed text.
To get what I want I have to cause a problem for the cross reference (yellow triangle with exclamation mark) and manually fix the capital start letter, or use hyperlinks and text anchor – a two-step action making a destination and hypherlink that cross referencing was supposed to fix.
It would save a lot of time if either the case used for the x-ref text was used as the default, or we could specify a case for the start letter of an x-ref.

Character Style contestual to Paragraph Style
Suppose you have a text, for example an introduction, with some word (i.e. titles) in Italic in it. Now you decide that this text must be in Italic. So, all the titles in it that were in Italic must be in plain.
In CSS this is easy to do; you'll have something like span.title { font-style: italic; } with the variant p.intro span.title { font-style: normal; }.
I think it's a necessity quite frequent. In other similar scenario you may have to use different colors, different weights.4 votes -
Custom page attributes to use as text variables
It would be very helpful to have an option to add specific attributes to pages, such as a name, category, and labels.
I would then like to use these attributes as text variables.
Right now the only text variable you can define from the page window is Section Marker. Also, it would be very helpful if the categorization would be also visual in the pages window.
