make book remember relative (to book file) chapter documents path
book should "remember" documents paths relative to book own file path.
After copying whole folder with book and documents files to new place, the book is opening chapters from old place instead of the one, that they are.
Just like it is in Framemaker. To omit this error, you have to change the name of old folder.

Add run-in footnotes
Add run-in footnotes, so multiple footnotes could be on the same line to save space (instead of every footnote starting on a new line)

Cross Reference / Hyperlink - EDITING FACILTY
Overview
I work on large catalogues all day (over 500 pages) and unfortunately the previous designers didnt have a naming convention for the hundreds of cross references. As a result its a MESS of meaningless names and broken links.Research.
I have looked over the internet to find a solution but there doesn't seem to be one (i found a script that looked promising but it didn't work).Request.
It would be great to have a panel that lists all the links/cross ref. in the document that allows you to RENAME, DELETE or EDIT the existing links.7 votes -
Managing Multiple Sets of Endnotes In a Document AND allowing Endnotes to refer to a separate INDD Document
Issue #1:
Here's my first dilemma: I am building a book with several hundred pages. This book will be printed (won't be an eBook/iBook). I'm keeping each chapter as its own document that I will then collect together as a larger Book at the end. The last chapter will be just for all the book's endnotes. In previous versions of InDesign, I would import the Word document, delete the endnotes out of the "Chapter x" document, and pop them back into the "Endnotes chapter" without affecting the superscripts referencing the endnotes throughout the text. Easy. Now, in cc 2018 if…22 votes -
Running Headers to pull from previous page
Add the ability for a paragraph/character style to pull from previous page. Currently only given first on page and last on page. Need more options. example: chapter 1title is on page 1 and text crosses onto page 2. At the end of page 2 is the next chapter title, but need to be able to put the previous chapter header on page 2 as a running header.

Please add a way within a book file to update all document's tables-of-contents.
Please add a way within a book file to update all document's tables-of-contents.
Right now, when I make a change to one document that changes page numbering, I must manually go update the TOC of every document in the book individually. This feature could easily be added to the same "Update Numbering" command within a book document.

Text variables to include auto numbers
When creating a text variable, it would be great to have it capture the auto numbering, e.g. if the heading is "1. Introduction" and the number is set as an auto number to the paragraph style, then the text variable that references that paragraph style should also pick up the number. At the moment, all you get from the text variable is "Introduction". Or at least have that as an option!

Add global level or book level text variables.
It would be nice to have book level text variable(s) that is used in documents in that book.

Multiple index
Support for multiple indices (Index of Subject, Index of Authors, Index of Passages, Index of pictures, index of tables).
That would greatly improve performance of work and cut a lot of time and get out books faster than before with higher accuracy!

Traditional Book Focus
I write long traditional books with hundreds of black and white text pages. Adobe's focus as a graphics company may be why it misses some important issues for people like me. Editing hundreds of pages of text and incorporating feedback is extremely difficult.
To accomplish this I have to get the full layout correct with many chapters all in individual files and then create a PDF version of the book. of course, when viewed two up the pages don' align properly if I don't insert a blank page as the first page using DC. Simple fix, give me a proofing…

make styles palette at book level (as well as variables, master pages and other shared book elements)
then, there could be a switch button in paragraph styles palette for documents (as well as other palettes) that makes all styles "inherited" from book "superpalette".
I mean, that I would make ONE set of styles which will be instantly propagated into all book documents, (which have this switch in "on" state).
I know it can be done with book "synchronize" button, but it is not working, when you change styles name in one document. Synchronizing just add this style as a new to synchronized documents, instead of changing its names everywhere.
And, last but not least, there will be…

Ability to lock (and unlock) the order of documents in Book files.
Ability to lock (and unlock) the order of documents in Book files. In long documents with many chapters it is easy to inadvertently move a document in the book window.

set individual pages as non-numbered in books
I use the book feature for many, if not most of the documents that I create. Each individual InDesign document included within the book is a new chapter. Because the majority of my clients request printed copies of the documents I create, I usually create customized tab pages that precede each chapter, so that the end user can easily find a specific section. These tabs are printed on card stock instead of the standard bond paper that is used for the content of the document.
The majority of my documents require page numbers, and so I use the feature where…

Endnote citation order
Looking to expand the scope of endnotes and footnote to include multiple stories in a document so that the citation order follows reference where it falls on the page, not just a single story.

Easier Conditional Text in Tables
Currently, to apply conditional text to text inside tables, you have to go cell-by-cell to apply the text. This behavior is unlike character and paragraph style application, where you can simply select a bunch of cells and apply the styles all at once. Conditional text application to cell contents should behave the same.

Print the contents of the book window
I'm working on a very long document -- a book with about 300 component files (2-4 pp each). They're all in the book window... but once you're past two or three dozen files, the organization of the book window becomes difficult to view and comprehend. I'd like to print out the contents of the book window (PDF, CSV, spreadsheet, text, whatever) so that I can review what's there and see how best to organize it. The book window allows me to print out the book in different ways, and I can print portions of the book... but not that overview…

Notes in Pages Panel
When working on a large document like a book (particularly if you are designing the book while you are producing it), you are constantly revising parts of the page, then going back to refine it as the design evolves. It would be great if you could mark up the Pages Panel with notes (like PDF markups) in the pasteboard like space around the spread icons. This would allow you to leave yourself or others on a team critical information about what is a placeholder and what should be reconsidered.

Change position of Trashcan icon in Index palette
You can create a new index entry at the cursor position by dragging an existing page reference to the Create New Index Entry icon at the bottom of the Index palette. However, that icon is adjacent to the Trash icon, and both are small. It is too easy to drag the existing page reference onto the Trash icon instead, thus deleting (without a warning!) the existing entry instead of creating a new one. Moving the Trash icon to between the Update Preview or Generate Index icons would reduce this risk. Or add some space and/or a vertical line before the…
