Have the option to use IMAGES for Paragraph: RULES, BORDERS, and SHADING
Paragraph Rules, Borders, and Shading are all great. They are also all: flat, uniform...boring...
Sometimes a layout demands stuff that is more...messy. Clients often ask for 'grungy' effects to highlight specific parts of text, and every designer gets what they mean.
I currently use an anchored image to achieve this, but it's fiddly, and easily broken. It requires scripting or tedious CandP.
Adding an IMAGE option to Paragraph (and Character?) styles would be brilliant. When I'm working on webpages, I'm using 'background' in CSS all the time.

Add Native Slug Area and Mechanical Dimensioning Tools (Inspired by Mechanical Cubed + Illustrator's Dimensions Tool)
As a freelance Production Designer and Creative with a fine arts background, I work across pharma, retail, and packaging—where detailed mechanicals, slug data, and precise dimension callouts are a daily necessity. One of the most essential—but frustratingly missing—features in InDesign is the ability to efficiently manage mechanical specs and slug information natively.
To bridge this gap, many of us rely on plug-ins like Mechanical Cubed and Slug Cubed from Triple Triangle Inc. These tools automate the placement and consistency of critical production data—such as trim, bleed, dimensions, and job metadata—directly into the slug area.
Interestingly, Adobe Illustrator already includes a…

find pasted graphics
Have a way to search for pasted graphics and to export them to be able to link them. I would like preflight to identify and let me know if the document contains pasted graphics. And, it would be great to export the graphic and link it.

Possibility to insert multi-language variables in one document
I would like to be able to insert multilingual variables in InDesign, within a single document. I often have to produce multilingual documents and have to insert dates, texts and so on.... I would like to be able to insert these variables in different layers of a document (e.g. ‘Italian’ layer = Italian text variable; ‘English’ layer = English text variable and so on).
I think this could be a good function to add in future versions.

Layers Panel: be able to Group two Objects that are already in a Group with more than two objects
I am creating flowcharts within InDesign as it seems to work better for me than in Illustrator. The Layers Panel allows me to do this. But I really, really wish I didn't have to do this workaround. These are my personal notes for future reference:
Grouping for complex assemblages of objects: creating a new group
This is needed because the Layers Panel won't allow you to group items deep in the Layers Panel, only if they're at the top level; you can't create a "Group within a Group."
- Use Layers Panel
- Keep two objects (doesn't matter what) off…2 votes -
Include bit depth (8/16/32 bits per channel) as an item to be included in the Links panel (or at least in the Info panel).
I know that bit depth is included in XMP File Info but as this panel is modal (and overly high) it is tedious to fetch this information from there. It would be convenient to have both in Links and Info panels. Possibly these panels could be updated with other useful data, too,. This is useful as HDR is becoming increasingly popular, and while PDFs can include 32-bit images, I'd imagine they are problematic in press.

Miro/Keynote-style simplified pen tool and magnetising arrows for diagrams.
Often I have to make flow charts and diagrams for our projects, and the power of the hyper-manual pen tool and frames tends to show down the design process when compared to similar processes in Miro or Keynote. If there was a way to make a simple curved line and magnetise it to a text box that would make pushing around content 1000% faster.

An actually useful AI idea: Accessibility/Reading Order
I find many AI features unhelpful - if I need text to image I can do it in Photoshop or Express, I don't need my layout program to do it. What I would love to see AI do is be able to analyze documents and automatically fix accessibility issues, such as reading order and export tagging of headers etc.

If you delete a layer, can you include an option to place all it's contents into another layer.

Global Edit
It would be extremely helpful to have a global edit feature like Illustrator. For example, I created a 2 layer text "graphic" to use as an indicator multiple times across a 12 page document. Once it printed, I realized the opacity was too high so it wasn't legible. Now I have to go and edit each individual instance of the exact same item or edit, and paste/duplicate it all over again. If Global Edit was a feature, I could select the object, select Global Edit, and make changes 1 time applying it to ever other instance automatically.

Support for placing Affinity suite documents (.afphoto, .afdesign, .afpub)
I would love to be able to place .afdesign and .afphoto files in my indesign documents.

I need in InDesign these tools: 1. in the «Path» I need «Outline Stroke 2. “Perespective” tool 3. the new “Generate” like what in Illustrat
I do almost all design and drawings in the InDesign program, so I found these tools in Photoshop and Illustrator. It is nice and ok for me not to leave InDesign and do all the things I need for printing and layout.
I am using InDesign Eastern language. (The Generating, is still not in the Eastern Version!!).

apply height or width to several image frames at once
Sometimes I need to make a slight adjustment in size to several images in a piece, and they all need to be the same size. If there was a way to select them all and then type in the height/width to apply to each selected item rather than all of them as a whole, that would save a lot of time of having to select and size each one separately.
2 votesSelect 1 image. Change its size to what you want for it and other images.
Then select rest of the images on that spread and choose Object > Transform Again > Transform Sequence Again Individually.
Hope it resolves the issue for you.

Text Variables should support super/sub script
Text variables should support incidental superscript and subscript. Currently, even with using GREP in the paragraph style which defines the super- or sub-script and placing on a master page, the text variable does not support these formats in actual placement on document pages. Very elementary feature that should be supported.

Align to page when only one item selected!
I usually have 'Align to Selection' as my default. Wouldn't it be great if when only one item is selected that the align buttons use 'Align to Page'

More options when resizing a layout
If I need to resize a page/layout using Document Setup, ideally for me, all of the existing content would remain at the top of the page, so a new, taller page size would add more space at the bottom, or if I wish to shorten a page, empty white space would be removed from the bottom. InDesign 19.2 centers all content vertically on the new page size, which I can't imagine anyone would ever want, forcing the unnecessary step of moving everything back to the top of the new page. You could add a Photoshop-style grid icon to show where…

I used to be able to create a PDF in InDesign when printing a booklet. I can no longer do this. Why? It's so frustrating!

ability to import .avif file.
InDesign should be able to import .avif files. It doesn't need more explanation than that, except to say, If importing graphics and images is one of the core purposes of the program, it's surprising to find a format that can't be imported. Please keep InDesign updated and capable of working with all formats.

Control When to Update Graphic Links
This is sort of already here, but my suggestion is more specific: Currently, graphic links are updated when a document opens. When a link is changed, it automatically updates with a document – but only the first time. After that, we need to click update in the links panel, which is a little onerous when I'm updating links often. It would save a lot of clicks if we could specify in the preferences to ALWAYS update links without asking (or not). So, it would be great to have two settings:
• update links automatically, always, without asking
• update links…2 votes
