An error occurred while saving the comment Halvor commented… and it seems to be the same problem as in these bug reports:

Nearly one year since Adobe's last response – one whole year! What do you do over there? Please fix this bug before anything else, this is very frustrating and dangerous!
An error occurred while saving the comment Halvor commentedAs I posted elsewhere on another bug report for the same issue:
This very serious bug is present in both 2019 and 2020 versions, it's shocking that Adobe haven't solved it yet. I concurr with previous posters, some bugs are merely inconvenient, but this one is really dangerous. I had a very long and stressful night when I first encountered it, making me unsure of every correction I had made the last couple of days. Luckily, nothing is really lost, it seems the bug is just a screen view problem.
I've found that if you type a character and delete it again in preview mode, the correct view pops back again.Update!
I thought the edits always were displayed correctly in Normal view, but discovered just now that an old version of the text was displayed in both Normal and Preview mode, and I sent a pdf to my client full of orphans and widows!. Had to restart InDesign to get everything displayed correctly. It's a huge problem when you can't trust what you see anymore!

Thanks for the suggestion. We have started to explore this feature. Will share more details soon
Thanks
AbhinavHalvor supported this idea ·An error occurred while saving the comment Halvor commentedI agree this would be very useful in some circumstances.
However, Character styles are picked up by auto-generated TOCs whether you want it or not. GREP styles aren't. The GREP style can be triggered by an invisible non joiner character inserted in front of the word. With GREP styles you can apply several character styles to the same word, I haven't tested the limits of how many before you run into trouble… GREP styles are applied in the order they are listed under "GREP styles" in a paragraph style. (I found a lot of useful information on this at indesignsecrets) -

To identify the cause of this issue, we started our investigation with the aim to resolve it. You might have also received an email from us seeking more details to help in our investigation.
We’ve concluded our investigation and came up with the following: Either the issue is fixed in the latest release of InDesign or the issue was intermittent at the time of its reporting and is not reproducible now.
We recommend you upgrade to the latest version of InDesign 2025(v20.0.0.095) as it is more robust and contains a lot of bug fixes.
We seek your support in our continual effort to improve InDesign.

Wow Tuomas, that's a really serious problem, I've fortunately not encountered that one!
Since Adobe haven't answered this report yet (after all, it has only been a year since the first report ;-), may I suggest a possible workaround: since Time Machine replaces the back-up, maybe storing your file in a Dropbox hot-folder will keep every saved version (for a limited time)? I'm not sure if it'll work in your case, but maybe worth a try..?
