This is a feature in Adobe Express, yet not InDesign nor Illustrator. Would love to see this added, even if its 8 years after the topic was created..

Screen recording. I cannot attach to my original message as it crashes my page and gives me a 502 bad gateway. Niiiiice.

Hi all,
Thanks for the detailed feedback on this thread. Reopening it, because we're still actively working on the issue. A few updates:
Relinking: the case where manually entered alt text was overwritten by generated alt text on relink was fixed in 21.4. If you're still seeing manual alt text get overwritten after relinking, reply here with a sample file and your InDesign version and we'll investigate directly.
Remove all generated alt text: an option to remove all generated alt text from a document in a single action is on the way.
We hear the wider feedback here too, and we're keeping this open while we work through it.

Bug in which AI Alt Text setting turns itself back on when importing user settings:
ON by default should mean when turned off, the setting stays off. If I have opted out of something, I should not have to opt-out AGAIN after the setting has turned itself back on due to a bug. I find this unacceptable

Definitely not resolved.
This feature is poorly designed and even more poorly thought out; there is no process of informing the user when AI text is added to every image in an old document they opened. There is also no process to revert that.
What an expected yet still disappointing response. The entire point of this thread is that feature that is "as designed" sucks and can harm users and businesses.

Fully agreed, I am in a corporate design position (non-legal) and unwanted AI alt-tags would cause big issues in our approval process and even bigger if they got published unknowingly.
I can see the benefit here, but it is only positive when prompted by the user/toggled off by default. Otherwise it feels like a rogue tool with potential to add hours to my workflow due to fixing its' mistakes.

Finally had this issue myself today and was trying to figure out how to do it... 8 years later with no fix is unbelievable.

This will likely never happen as Adobe is prioritizing their own in-house InDesign Agent. However, I recommend MATE for InDesign on Adobe Exchange. I found it a month or so ago, it is a one-time purchase for an API license I think but if you have Chat GPT credits you can connect the API and essentially connect GPT to InDesign.
I did not purchase the API license but tried some of the free prompts and it seemed to work pretty well. It took ~30 seconds to change multiple variables of different paragraph styles. Not sure how it is now since I don't use it but worth checking out.
When I threw the same prompt at the Beta InDesign Agent, it froze for multiple minutes and crashed my InDesign. This happened every time.
