[ID-4208669]QR Code Generator Problems with Special Characters in vCards
In the actual version of indesign (16.0) there is still an issue with internal generated vCard-QR-Code scanned by an iphone.
In germany there are special Characters called "Umlaute" (ü, ö, ä) or the "sharp s" (ß). If these characters are used in an vCard generated within the buildin function from indesign, they are replaced with other symbols on the iPhone QR-Code-Camera Reader.
I think this is only a Problem of the used vCard-Version. I think indesign uses Version 2.1 if you would just use Version 3.0 this issue does not appear.
please see attached one example
Kind regards from germany
Max

I found a workaround to this, using data merge.
When you create the source data for data merge like in https://www.tech4pub.com/2015/02/03/indesign-cc-tip-adding-qr-codes-with-data-merge/, you can specify vcard version 3.0 instead of 2.1 and then the issues goes away. Terribly annoying if you only need to make one or a couple of codes, but it works.I used the concatenation function in excel to generate the vcard data from existing cells of data. Also terribly annoying.
This function from adobe "works" but is not really usable. Really makes you wonder what they do with our money.

same here. Please, Adobe, there's a few people out here on the planet who need to use more than just the reduced character set of English language. I find it pretty embarassing that in the year 2021 this can still be an issue in a software. I grew up with these kind of things in the early days of computing and web design, but hello ... still?

Hi, InDesign team. I have the same Issue with the reader of my iPhone camera and the special characters like é á or the letter ñ in spanish. When I read back the QR code they are replaced with some other symbols, just like said above on the post.
I hope you could do something about it.
Kind regards

Fix the bug so that the danish letters æ.ø.å also can be transferred to vCard (business card) unchanged when the vCard generated in the Indesign QRcode generator gets scanned.
