export book to pdf slows the mouse respond
Every time, when I export whole book into PDF file, my mouse starts to move with steps. Everything else is working more or less normally, but moving cursor is almost impossible.
Cursors respond with huge lag - around 1 sec, and moves in steps, what makes impossible to use the mouse.

I am experiencing the same exact thing. It is extremely infuriating..
Seeing that this has been an issue for several years now is a bit shocking as it has a pretty drastic effect on the workflow of each individual user. I would of thought that Adobe poured more resources into solving this.

Fix this issue at once! Stop wasting time on adding new year numbers and splash logo to updates you are making! Focus!
This issue has been reported _2_ years ago, and through all the past 4-5 updates including the latest everything regarding page numbering, export pdf, preflight, package etc done from the hamburger menu of BOOK function cause the mouse to become jerky.
I have tried this even on 1-day installed Windows 10 with freshly installed Creative Cloud + Indesign + all updates, fresh new graphics card and entire new computer = same result as my previous post where I was on an Windows 7 OS and different hardware.
People around me experience the same jerky mouse movement on other hardware too. This is 100%+100% related to GUI inside the BOOK window. Once it start processing more than _1_ document in the list, mouse becomes jerky. Imagine my user manuals have over 70 documents performing this way. I _can_ use keyboard to use PC otherwise, but that does not help much for an multitasking environment. Its 2020, btw.
CPU load is minimal, memory 32GB, nothing else running, don't matter, mouse still slow.
1 year has passed personally from my original post - still no improvements. I have been patient, due to the fact last time I had older OS and hardware. But seeing no improvements over the past 2 months with all new OS-hardware and software things are getting highly frustrating - kind of like into customer complaint of malfunctioning paid-for software type of scenario. It can only get worse from here on.
Everything but the BOOK related function is however working great as always in Indesign for me.

So glad I found this post. At least I know it's not on my end. Small consolation.
This is a major issue for me as well. Renders my powerhouse workstation unusable for 30 minutes while InDesign makes its way through exporting an Book as ePub. Just terrible. Please, please fix this Adobe!!
this also happens with export to EPUB. has done for several years now. When are you going to fix Indesign Adobe?

I have this same problem, and I'm on the latest version 15.1.1 x64, with fully updated Windows 10. So tired of paying all this money for a "graphics" program that tanks my $2,500 machine. Is this related to the fact that InDesign can't use a graphics card? Wastes so much time waiting for documents to generate a pdf. Can's use my machine at all during exports.

The mouse and combination of BOOK works fine in Indesign 1.x all the way to CS3 (used Indesign every day from 1999). Never tested CS4,CS5 as CS3 was always favourite and worked perfectly even today.
Now with recent v14 and latest v15 of Indesign 2019 and 2020 the problem still remains. What is going on?
We have lots of separate docs linked into BOOK function via mapped network drives. I run Windows 7 64bit with all updates and graphical drivers in place. Using another USB mouse does not solve it.
Doing a Update Page Numbers, Preflight and even Export book to PDF the problem remains. Mouse is super slow. I have only seen this behaviour in Windows if there was a 100% disk activity + CPU 100% at once. Indesign does not show any of these signs, so its related to the GUI elements, or some kind of child GUI problem with the progress bar once we are in BOOK mode. Indesign 2019/2020 does not behave slow in any other menu or function.
This is purely something todo with GUI response in at least Indesign versions from 2018-2020 as far as I have tested.
This should get top priority.
I also know this problem.
Since InDesign CS2 (now CC 2019) we are working with books. When InDesign exports a book to PDF InDesign opens every file of the book in the background. And after the export you have to wait until InDesign have closed all the dokuments. This takes a lot of time, you cant work with the mouse and i think that this workflow is not up to date. We need the book funktion every day!
Adobe, please create a fast book export to pdf.

I have suffered from this bug for years, multiple machines, multiple installations. Only seems to affect Windows users.
This issue can be worked around by executing export via script.
The application will not display the progress bar, but mouse will not be slowed as well.

I have the same problem. IndesignCC 2017 then 2019 + Win 10 (updated). During the pdf export the mouse is really very slow and is completely unusable.
I've opened a Centre Programme that I update as required on a regular basis and no response moving elements or text boxes INDD 2019 on Windows 10. Nothing is locked and was perfectly fine in previous versions.
I reverted to the previous version and I managed to update and save the document. Now to see if updating the reverted version updates and works as it should. Most bizarre.
