2. can't convert PDF files

   Indesign is currently failing to open PDF and Illustrator files. The Covert dialogue pops up and takes a very long time to process before returning a failure message. Error says "some features in the PDF" are to blame, but it's happening with even previously good files and .ai files as well.

   Issue initially presented on latest version (24.1.1); tried reinstalling, then tried uninstalling that and dialing back to version 21.0.2. Same issue every time, even on files I worked on previously with no issue. Have rebooted my system multiple times, no change. Sample PDF attached.

   Windows 11 enterprise x64
   AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor (3.80 GHz)
   RAM 32.0 GB (31.1 GB usable)

3. Modal dialog boxes appear behind InDesign window on macOS + excessive resource usage

   I am experiencing two recurring problems while using Adobe InDesign on my iMac. The most disruptive is that modal dialog boxes are appearing behind the main InDesign window instead of in front of it.

   Problem 1 – Dialog boxes appearing behind the InDesign workspace

   When InDesign opens a dialog box, the dialog sometimes appears behind the main InDesign document/workspace window.

   Because the dialog is modal, InDesign will not allow me to continue working normally until I respond to it. However, I cannot see the dialog because it is hidden behind the main InDesign window.

   Initially this made it appear as though InDesign had frozen. If I try to quit InDesign, I receive a message telling me that there is an active dialog box, but there is no visible dialog box for me to respond to.

   I have now discovered a way to reproduce/reveal the problem: if I switch to another macOS Desktop/Space and then return to the Desktop/Space where InDesign is running, the hidden dialog box suddenly appears correctly in front of the InDesign workspace. I can then respond to the dialog and continue working.

   This is happening frequently and is significantly disrupting my workflow.

   Expected behaviour

   When InDesign opens a modal dialog box, the dialog should always appear in front of the InDesign workspace so that I can see it and respond to it.

   Actual behaviour

   The modal dialog sometimes appears behind the main InDesign window. InDesign then becomes effectively unusable because it is waiting for a response to a dialog that I cannot see.

   Switching to another macOS Desktop/Space and then returning to InDesign causes the dialog to display correctly in front of the workspace.

   I have found older Adobe UserVoice reports describing similar behaviour. I am submitting this report because the problem is still occurring on current Apple hardware and my current InDesign/macOS installation, so it does not appear to have been fully resolved.

   Problem 2 – Excessive resource usage and computer becoming very hot

   I am also experiencing unusually high system resource usage while working in InDesign.

   My iMac becomes noticeably hot and appears to be working extremely hard while I am using InDesign. At times this has become significant enough that I have stopped working, closed all of my applications and restarted the computer. On some occasions I have shut the computer down completely because of how hot it has become.

   This is occurring during my normal InDesign work and is becoming frequent enough that it is affecting my ability to work reliably.

   I do not know whether the excessive resource usage is related to the hidden modal-dialog problem, but I wanted to report both behaviours because they are occurring on the same system while using InDesign.

   System information

   Computer: Apple iMac, 24-inch (2024)
   Processor: Apple M4
   Memory: 16 GB
   Operating system: macOS Sequoia 15.6.1
   Adobe InDesign version: 2026

   Additional information

   This is not a conventional InDesign crash. InDesign remains open.

   The main problem is that a modal dialog can become hidden behind the InDesign workspace. Because InDesign is waiting for a response to that hidden dialog, the program can appear frozen or unresponsive and cannot be quit normally.

   Switching macOS Desktops/Spaces and then returning to InDesign causes the dialog to appear correctly in front of the workspace.

   Because this is happening repeatedly, rather than as an isolated incident, I would appreciate Adobe investigating whether this is a known issue with InDesign's window/dialog handling on macOS, particularly on Apple Silicon Macs, and whether the unusually high resource usage I am experiencing could be related.

4. Everything on my screen goes invisible

   When working in a document, everything on my screen goes invisible. It's all still there because I can select it and get the selection boxes but can't see it. This happens sporadically and there does not seem to be a certain thing that triggers it.

5. Data Merge with CSV file not working

   Using Indesign 21.5 trying to use Data Merge with a CSV file keeps giving me error that says "There is some error while parsing. Please check your data file."
   The exact same CSV file using data merge works in Indesign version 20.5.4 with no issue - all links/images import.

6. Alt-Text: incorrect German text

   Within the preferences, Adobe tells German users that the text "KI-generierte Inhalte" will be added to the alt-text, if this feature is activated.

   But instead "Beschreibung von KI generiert" is added in reality (second screenshot). This is the correct meaning, so please change this in the preferences to "Beschreibung von KI generiert" as well.

7. Issues with Indesign

   I have experienced multiple stability issues with Adobe InDesign 2026.

   The most serious issue has happened twice. While working normally on a document, multiple pages suddenly appear completely blank, as though all of their contents have disappeared. The pages become entirely white inside InDesign.

   I first noticed the issue while exporting the document to PDF because the exported PDF also contained these blank pages.

   I was not performing any unusual operations beforehand. I was simply editing the document, saving frequently, and exporting to PDF.

   The linked images and assets were stored locally on my computer and were never moved, renamed, or deleted. No missing-link warnings or other error messages were displayed.

   Interestingly, I was able to temporarily recover the document by using File > Save As and saving it as a new InDesign file. After doing this, all of the missing page contents reappeared. However, after continuing to work on the new file, the exact same issue occurred again.

   In addition to this problem, I have experienced repeated issues when exporting PDFs. Even exporting a single page or only a few pages can take an unusually long time. During these exports, InDesign sometimes becomes completely unresponsive, forcing me to restart my computer because the application freezes.

   At no point did InDesign display an error message explaining the problem.

   My biggest concern is that this issue has now happened twice without any apparent cause. It makes me feel that my documents are unstable and that I could lose many hours of work even though I am following a normal workflow and saving frequently.

   This has significantly affected my confidence in using InDesign for professional work. I would appreciate it if Adobe could investigate whether this is a document stability or PDF export bug.

8. variable devanagari fonts characters not composing correctly

   Variable fonts in Devanagari & Gurmukhi no longer compose characters correctly. InDesign 21.3. Mac Sequoia 15.7.1.

   They did work previously, and if I open an old file the fonts still appear correctly until I change something.
   Font is Anek Devanagari/Gurmukhi, or Noto Sans. Static versions work file.

   I don't see this bug in the list of things fixed in the latest update, has it been corrected?

   Ik wil een probleem melden met betrekking tot de manier waarop Adobe InDesign en Creative Cloud omgaan met standaard Windows-systeemlettertypen, zoals Roboto.
   Het probleem
   Wanneer een InDesign-document wordt geopend dat is gemaakt op een ander systeem, uit een pakketbestand komt of een andere versie van hetzelfde lettertype gebruikt, meldt InDesign regelmatig dat Roboto ontbreekt, terwijl de lokale Windows-versie gewoon is geïnstalleerd en actief is.
   Creative Cloud probeert vervolgens automatisch een Adobe Fonts-versie van hetzelfde lettertype te synchroniseren. Hoewel de naam identiek is, betreft dit vaak een andere fontbron of een ander bestandsformaat (bijvoorbeeld OpenType in plaats van TrueType of een andere leverancier).
   Het gevolg
   Deze automatische synchronisatie veroorzaakt direct een lettertypeconflict. Creative Cloud meldt dat een lettertype met dezelfde naam al op het systeem aanwezig is, terwijl InDesign het lokale lettertype toch als "ontbrekend" blijft beschouwen.
   Dit leidt tot:
   • onterechte meldingen over ontbrekende lettertypen;
   • conflicten tussen lokale en Adobe Fonts-versies;
   • onnodige lettertypevervanging;
   • verbroken stijlkoppelingen;
   • inconsistente typografie binnen bestaande documenten.
   Gewenste oplossing
   InDesign zou eerst de lokaal geïnstalleerde systeemlettertypen moeten controleren voordat Adobe Fonts automatisch wordt geactiveerd.
   Wanneer een lokaal lettertype dezelfde familie- en stijlnamen bezit als het gevraagde lettertype, zou InDesign deze automatisch moeten koppelen in plaats van een cloudversie te downloaden.
   Met andere woorden:
   • geef lokale systeemlettertypen prioriteit boven Adobe Fonts;
   • verbeter de font-matching zodat identieke families van verschillende leveranciers als compatibel worden herkend wanneer de metrische eigenschappen overeenkomen;
   • voorkom automatische synchronisatie wanneer al een geschikte lokale versie beschikbaar is.
   Hiermee worden onterechte meldingen over ontbrekende lettertypen voorkomen en blijven bestaande documenten stabiel en consistent.
   Hartelijk dank voor uw aandacht. Ik hoop dat dit probleem in een toekomstige update van InDesign wordt opgelost.

10. Unable to select multiple objects or key object

    Recently, it is not possible to select some objects or a key object.
    This does not happen with every object - probably only with images.
    I know that this problem has already been reported and you wrote that it has been resolved, in fact it still exists, so I opened a new request.

    Indesign 21.4. and 21.4.1 x64 | Win 11 Pro 25H2 | Build 26200.8655 | Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.315.0:
    Issue: Certain GREPs no longer working: Example:
    Find what:
    ^Question\h\d+\K.+(?=\r)

    Find Format:
    A Paragraph Style

    No matches are found (there were matching elements in all our test documents).

    The GREP works when Find Format is empty (at least regarding Paragraph Styles, Character Styles or Character Colors).
    The GREP works with a PS, CS or CC only if either the "^" at the beginning or the \K is omitted.

    This issue persist for several days by now.
    Its an issue with every indesign document we have tested (old ones as well as newly created ones especially for testing).
    Its an issue regardless which workstation we use and to which network the workstation is connected.
    Its an issue when the document is accessed via our fileserver and its an issue when the document is saved locally.
    Its an issue with every GREP that stats with "^" and contains "\K" - wheter there is a positive lookahead or not doesn't influence the outcome.

    (?<=^Question\h\d)\K.+(?=\r) is working in conjunction with an entry in the Find Format but is for the obvious reason no viable workaround. And neither is omitting either an entry in the Find Format or the "^" or "\K".

    As a last resort (such GREPs is our bread and butter in scientific publishing) we unshelved an old workstation with CS 6 and Win 10 with the last update and the GREPs worked as fine as ever. But before we revert completely at least for the time being I hope a quick solution can be found.

12. Images cannot be used as align to key object

    Images cannot be used as align to key object

    I am working on Windows 11. Adobe Indesign 21.4

    I am trying to use align to key object the old fashioned way by selecting multiple objects and with a single click choose my Key object. This used to work no problem at all.

    I select multiple Text boxes and I can align them using one of them as a key object.

    I select multiple images and I cannot align them using one of them as key object.

    I select different image objects and text objects and I can align them using the Text box as key object.

    I select different Image objects and text objects and I cannot align them using the Image as key object.

    Same happens with shapes and images.

    Conclusion is something is wrong with images or there is a setting I am not aware of that wasn’t present before.

    It doesn’t matter what settings I have in the alignment panel under ‘Align to’.

    The symptom, is that when trying to use an image as a key object it simply releases the selection when clicking on it.

    Additional problem or symptom is that when I select multiple objects that are images and try to move them around they get deselected the moment I want to drag.

    If a text box is part of the selection this doesn’t happen.

    This makes editing a document very slow please let me know what’s going on or if its a bug, please fix it

13. Przesuwanie kilku obiektów nie działa.

    Zaznaczam minimum dwa importowane obiekty i nie mogę ich wszystkich przesunąć. Przesuwa mi się tylko jeden - pozostałe zostają na swoich miejscach. W poprzedniej wersji to działało. Nie da się tak pracować.

14. Justification Alternates (jalt) ignored by the HarfBuzz World-Ready shaping workflow

    In the recent InDesign versions Adobe has introduced HarfBuzz as the default text shaping engine but the Justification alternates feature is now not working in OpenType fonts at all, we have confirmed it by testing with several Arabic fonts. For Adobe legacy text rendering engine this feature still works seamlessly but not for Harfbuzz
    It has disturbed all the Arabic users past documents.

    I have attached a test Arabic document with Adobe Naskh font, as this font has justification alternates feature.

    Apply the World-Ready Paragraph Composer.
    Justify the Arabic paragraph.
    In Arabic Enabled InDesign set the Insert Kashidas to: None (image attached)
    Enable Justification Alternates. (image attached)

    Compare the broken result under HarfBuzz with the correct result under Legacy Text Shaping.

15. [BUG] Generative AI Alt Text setting will turn itself on when importing user settings

    This is my 2nd day this week posting a very frustrating bug on InDesign and I consider this one far worse. In trying to figure out a bug with workspaces on Monday, I exported my current settings, reset InDesign preferences, and imported my settings back in. 

     

    I did not check the settings. I should have. The generate AI Alt-text box had been rechecked, and I had NEVER manually done that. I have recreated this issue more than 5+ in a row by:

     

    1. Resetting my InDesign preferences to the default and restarting.
    2. Reopening InDesign, checking off both Generative AI boxes in preferences
    3. Export those settings, reset preferences back to default on reset, and reopen InDesign
    4. When you reopen InDesign and import your preferences (they should be default with both Gen-AI boxes UNCHECKED), the “Auto-generate Alt Text when placing images” WILL BE TURNED ON EVERY TIME WITHOUT FAIL.

     
    I cannot explain how upset I am by this bug. I am nearly insisting this broken and destructive feature be pulled from the app because it has only been a nuisance for most users I have spoken to. If there is n feature that can automatically affect 100+ photos in a document, why is there not a feature to automatically remove any changes? Why on earth to I have to manually fix the AI’s mistake that I didn’t even ask for???

     

    I spent the past 3 days working on files that now have had AI Alt text generated for them without me knowing. I have had those settings off since they first came out. 

     

    I have absolutely no way to know which files have been affected because AFAIK there is no history log.

     

    BONUS TIME!!

     

    I would also love to point out that the Alt-text tag is affected by layers. If your photo bleeds behind an object, the alt text symbol will be hidden. Maybe this is not new, but almost feels like another step to further hide AI alt text generation from users. 

     

     

    This bug has pretty much broken me on this problem and made me furious. Are there even bug testers for these features? I am a designer, not a software engineer, yet this is my second InDesign bug found this week that has seriously impacted my workflow and made me take time out of my work day to address it. I am furious. At this point I feel I deserve compensation lmao.

16. Alt+drag duplicates only one object

    When two or more placed/linked files are selected and duplicated using Alt+drag, only one of the objects is duplicated.

    (Workaround: Grouping the linked objects before Alt+drag works as expected

18. shift + arrow not working

    Adobe Indesign version 21.3 x64
    Suddenly my shift + arrow movement is not working. the normal arrow movement is still working but I want to increase the increment without going into the settings because I use both the small single pixel movement and the larger one I used to get out o the shift key. Please help

19. InDesign fails to open .indd files from Finder when full path is long on APFS external drive

    Environment:
    - macOS: 26.4.1
    - InDesign version: 21.3
    - Drive format: APFS external SSD
    - File location: /Volumes/nollueP41/작업드라이브/01프로젝트별/국립환경인재개발원/01_폐기물처리 및 자원순환의 이해 2기/작업/폐기물처리 및 자원순환의 이해 2기.indd

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Place an .indd file in a deep folder path on an APFS external drive.
    2. Double-click the .indd file in Finder.
    3. InDesign launches or becomes active, but shows the error:
    “Missing required parameter 'from' for method 'open'.”
    4. Move the same file to the root level or a shorter path on the same external drive.
    5. Double-click again.

    Expected result:
    The .indd file should open normally from Finder regardless of full path length, as long as the path is valid in macOS.

    Actual result:
    The file fails to open from Finder when the full path is long. The same file opens normally via File > Open inside InDesign, and also opens when dragged into the InDesign window. Other file types such as PDF open normally from the same folder path.

    Additional notes:
    This appears to be an InDesign-specific issue handling long full paths passed from Finder, not a macOS file system issue.

    Environment:
    - macOS: 26.4.1

20. InCopy is creating "phantom hyperlinks" in InDesign

    Our InCopy editors are adding hyperlinks but they aren't showing up in InDesign. To make things worse, you can no longer add a hyperlink to the text. I discovered that InCopy is leaving phantom hyperlinks and it seems to be a bug, or at least has caused us considerable consternation. (I'm using InDesign 2026 v21.0.2 and InCopy 2026 v21.3).

    Okay, I’ve gone deep into the rabbit hole and I think I’ve figured out the problem with hyperlinks not showing up, or text you can’t add a hyperlink to. It’s a lengthy, complex explanation so I’ll start with the all too easy fix and then explain why. 

    THE FIX: When you create a link in InCopy, you have to click the “Shared Hyperlink Destination” button.

    This really only applies to multiple links that have the same destination, like how Supplemental Table 1 and Supplemental Table 2 both go to the same URL, but I don’t think it will hurt to click it for every link, just in case that URL gets repeated later on.

    If you don’t click Shared Hyperlink Destination, only the first hyperlink will show up in the Hyperlinks panel, and the rest become phantom links.

    And to make things worse, apparently this isn’t an issue when you make a link in InDesign. It only happens in InCopy. 

    If I’m right, this will fix the problem. At least, it worked when I tried it. We’ll have to see if it works all the time.

    THE EXPLANATION for us InDesign nerds.

    If there’s text that you can’t make into a hyperlink (the New Hyperlink option is greyed out) it’s because there’s already a link there, but for some reason it’s not showing up in the Hyperlinks panel. It’s a phantom link. However, you can still see the phantom link if you open it in Story Editor.  Story Editor shows where the link is, but you can’t edit it or add a new link to the text. 

    The only way to fix it is to retype the text outside of the link brackets, or copy and paste the text out of the brackets (except the link sticks to the first character so you can’t copy that, which is yet another pain). After you retype the text, you can highlight the link (everything in the brackets) and delete it, and then you are able to add a hyperlink to the retyped text.  You have to do this for each phantom link individually. This is an annoying and cumbersome fix, but we’ve known about it for a while.

    I made a quick script to look for the phantom hyperlinks, but all it shows me are the hyperlinks in the Hyperlinks panel, so I can’t find the phantom links that show up in the Story Editor with a script. I may explore that some more in case the issue arises again.

    But in any case, it looks like the links are losing their destination URL in InCopy because the URL is already taken by another link, but the hyperlink still remains and won’t show up in the Hyperlinks panel because there’s no destination. InDesign sees an empty link and doesn’t show it on the panel. However, when you use the shared destination button, all the links just point to that one URL and share it, and it shows up in the Hyperlinks panel. I’m going to report this to InDesign as a bug.

    Whew!
