1. Montserrat Font Constantly trying to load in InDesign

   Whenever I open an InDesign file the background task starts up and it is Montserrat Bold trying to load. This occurs no matter what file I have open and whether or not the file uses the font being loaded.

2. InDesign task remains active when application is completely closed on Windows

   Steps to reproduce:

   • Currently running Windows 10 Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042
   • Indesign v16.0

   1. Open InDesign
   2. Open any file and make edits.
   3. Close application
   4. Click on InDesign from program list on Windows to reopen

   Problem: InDesign task remains active in task manager when application is fully closed, giving impression that application may either be slow or inaccessible next time the user select applications from their list of programs.

   Expected result: Once the user closes the program, the task appears terminated from task manager, and application can be started the next time user clicks on its icon from the list of applications.

   Additional info: This issue occurs at random occurrences, and it was not possible to attach a screenshot.

   Steps to reproduce:

3. Publish Online roll over bug

   I'm using InDesign 2021 version 16.0.

   I seem to be running into an issue with the roll over effect in Publish Online. The issue seems sporadic, but once the bug happens, it doesn't fix itself.

   I've setup a timeline so that when you roll over the date, info will be visible. This works initially, but then when I try to go back to some dates that I've previously rolled over, the info does not show up. Expected result is to have the info shown when you roll over the date. Actual result shows that the button to trigger the roll over changes to it's roll over state but the info is not visible.

   See attached PNGs. Note that the date is supposed to be blue when mouse hovers over.

   I'm using InDesign 2021 version 16.0.

4. Each time I'm importing a picture or try to relink a picture it crashes

   I have the last version (16.0) and each time I'm trying to upload a picture on my document or relink a picture, my program is crashing.

5. Temporary file not working

   In the company I'm working at we have our files on a server that we share. When a customer have some edits requested we get an email in our system with the changes required. Me or one of my colleagues dive in to the job and fix the things in InDesign and then send a pdf back to the customer.
   This works really great and it's usually small changes here and there in quarterly and annual reports we work with.
   But now it seems like the temporary file saved on the server isn't working like it used to.
   This morning I jumped in to fix one job that came in the email system and I saved the pdf and sent it to the customer. And a few seconds one of my colleagues said he tried to save a pdf, but it was already saved. So he was working in the InDesign file the same as I was working on it.
   This couldn't be done before. InDesign said the file was already open and I guess it's because the temporary file was in the folder while someone was working. Now it doesn't care if the file is open by someone else.
   We did a test now (we have contact over Zoom during the Corona), but I opened the file and then my colleague opened the same file with no problem.
   This is something that needs to be fixed. Otherwise we need to call each other and ask about every single file before we start working with it.
   Something must be wrong here. It used to work fine before.

   I hope you understand what the problem is and please let me know if this can be fixed.

6. Pages Pallet - page numbers under thumbnails hidden under last row of a small pallet

   1. InDesign 15.1.3
   2. Create a document where the Pages Pallet is smaller than the thumbnails in the pallet.
   3. Expected to see page numbers under the Thumbnails on the last row.
   4. Actual Result: The last row shows the thumbnail, but the page numbers are hidden, but only in the WORKSPACE views of: Advanced Book Essentials Essentials Classic …and my custom one (probably based on one of those above.)

   The page numbers appear to work correctly in the other WORKSPACE layouts.

   Attached are a couple images with the page numbers hidden, and one where it is displayed correctly (The correct one is using the [Digital Publishing] Workspace.)

7. InDesign 16.0 on Catalina is constantly laggy

   Whether I've just opened a file and am waiting for it to appear, or I've just clicked on an object and am waiting for the chance to manipulate it, that stupid beach ball just won't go away! Please fix!

8. InDesign very slow after update to 16.0 (x64), especially data merge

   Opening the app takes well over half a minute, used to be within 5 sec. Closing with save can take over a minute for a single master page with three variable placeholders. The app feels sluggish to use and there is a visible delay after performing any action, ranging between a fraction of a second and a few seconds.

   This last one has always been the case, but after update it is even worse: exporting a PDF using data merge renders the machine unusable. Mouse cursor moves with visible skips and lengthy delay between those skips, regardless of complexity of the job. Any action takes forever to perform. It is especially egregious with variable images, but even tiny static PDF backgrounds placed on master pages will cause the same issue. This has always been bad, but never this bad prior to 16.0.

   No third party plugins are installed, some files are accessed via the local network, but the connectivity is fast and should under no circumstances be a bottleneck - we work with multiple image processing tools and only Creative Cloud causes grief.

   CPU is a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core, 3.6 Ghz, 16 GB of RAM. And none of the system resources are being used to the fullest during rendering (snippet attached) - there is literally no valid justification for the operating system being rendered unusable.

9. Preflight panel Overset text not showing page number

   For a couple different files, I got an error message in the Preflight panel, indicating the presence of Overset text, but NO page number. In both files, it said it was an issue with footnotes, but not where. One of the suggested fixes is to allow Split Footnotes, but that option is already checked.

   After a lot of sleuthing, we eventually found the error. In one of the two files there were multiple errors in multiple locations. The entire footnote had vanished. The footnote reference was still there, but all of the text of the note had disappeared.

   As you can see, I had previously lengthened the page to make room for the footnote text at the bottom of the page. But then the program decided, nope, not enough room for that after all, and made the entire footnote disappear.

   When I lengthened the page by 0p1, Poof! the footnote text magically reappeared. If I shortened it by that 0p1 again, the footnote text stayed in place.

   1. Why does it suddenly decide the page is too short, when it was not too short before or after that time?

   2. Why has the Preflight panel gotten less smart than it used to be and can no longer identify the location of the error?

   I upgraded to version 16.0 and got the same results.

   Windows PC, 64-bit, shown here is 15.1.2, but as noted, after I upgraded to version 16.0, the Preflight panel didn't get any smarter.

10. Permission issue when opening first time from OSX server

    Permission issue when opening first time from OSX server.
    When opening Indesign file from OSX server, it gives error message: "Cannot open the document ”Xxxx: Xxxxx: Xxxxxx: Xxxxx: Xxxxxxx.indd”. You may not have permission or the document may be open already." When trying again, the file open normally. File is not open already, permissions are ok. Other versions of InDesign opens file ok. Indesign CC2020 / macOS Big Sur 11.0.1.

11. Activating Font

    My Indesign will randomly start trying to activate source sans pro fonts and will not ever finish activating. I can't cancel it, I can't go online to adobe fonts and decative and then active because it says there is a conflict. Because it's syncing it won't export any of my files until it's done ... and it's never done. The only way I get it to work is to force quit Indesign and it will work until it randomly starts trying to activate it again and the cycle repeats.

12. Creative Cloud hijacks my entire computer - slow to the point of unworkable

    I see this issue so HUGE in forums everywhere and find it frustrating with the support team coming up with lame answers every time, mostly blaming the user and with micro solutions that are temporary. These issues are known issues and keep coming back. Support close the tickets too readily and we can't re-open those cases to demonstrate how this is unresolved.

    I've tried every remedy including:

    • Uninstall Creative Cloud and all apps and reinstall
    • Many times 'Repaired' - pretty much every restart it needs 'repairing'
    • Used the cleaner tool
    • Cleaned specific cache as instructed
    • Made a second user to ensure it wasn't any preferences or cache issues
    • Watch the activity monitor and close everything else to work
    • Had support help and even up to engineers with no luck
    • Rolling back to 2018 version

    Creative Cloud and using InDesign seems to take up to 2-3G of my RAM to operate which seems ridiculous and taxes the computer too much. That's nearly 50% of the computer's RAM which doesn't seem right. At times I see that I only have 39MB left in RAM and that causes the whole thing to go slow.

    I don't really keep anything on the computer and run external drives so that the main computer is not taxed. Still is slow because Creative Cloud is hijacking my 'virtual memory' apparently. I clean regularly and now have to optimise as I work to make it speed up using CleanMyMac.

    Now there is a new update to InDesign v16.0 and it is not compatible with High Sierra but says I need 10.14 or later. I'm very concerned about updating to Mojave as it seems that it will only increase the amount of RAM being used and make the computer unworkable. I can't upgrade the RAM at the moment, and I do need InDesign to earn my living. I've timed some days that I lose collectively hours of lost time with this slowness and crashing - it is beyond frustrating and been putting up with it for over a year since the 2019/2020 upgrades.

    It really isn't OK that this isn't addressed by Adobe. There are bugs in the code and the cloud based system is too taxing on the RAM. Surely the old way of installing some software on the machine was more manageable.

    Is there any way to reduce the tax on the RAM please?

14. Option-Click/Drag to duplicate spread does not work anymore with MacOS 11.0.1 update

    2. To Duplicate Spreads in Pages Panel — Option-Click/Drag to duplicate spread does not work anymore with MacOS 11.0.1 update. It used to with previous MacOS.
    3. Expected Result: the grab hand would have a plus sign, then duplicate spread.
    4. Actual Result: The grab hand operates as "Move" not "Duplicate".

    Right/Click Duplicate does, however (but who has that much time? : )

15. Bug with InDesign 16 Word and Textedit

    I noticed a huge performance bug.

    When I am working on a book with many pages and switch to an app like Word or Textedit and then back to InDesign, I get a beach ball for 30–60s. Only in InDesign. When I quit Word or Textedit, the beach ball disappears and InDesign runs normal again.
    Restart eg. doesn't help!

17. Serious InDesign Server slow down with Catalina

    We are stuck with serious performance issues with our scripts for InDesign Server (mostly Applescripts) after upgrading from Mojave (macOS 10.14.6) to Catalina (macOS 10.15.7). The problems are alike with Indesign Server CC 2019 and CC 2020.

    The current machine is a Mac Mini (2018) is used as development server for our current project. But when taken in production (very soon) the solution that is the outcome of the project must be able to run on a machine that demands Catalina or later. And this solution will rely heavily on high performance.

    Earlier we managed to solve some permission issues that came with the upgrade (described in another post). But I’m afraid the current performance problems 'are much deeper rooted and can only be solved by Adobe and/or Apple.

    We haven’t encountered any resembling performance issues with other applications than Indesign Server, or with scripts working with tasks that does not involve InDesign server on these machines or other macs running Catalina. The slow down with InDesign Server are abnormal.

    The problems manifests themselves in several ways:

    1. The time it takes for a script to do its tasks have raised to unacceptable levels. In the very best cases, it has more than tripled.
    2. Processing time also varies a lot between executions of the same script – for no apparent reasons.
    3. Processing time is often even higher when initiated by a soap call than when the same script is run from a script editor.

    For evaluation I have used one and the same script working with one and the same document. The test document (relatively light in our context) is opened from a template with around 350 empty text- and image frames. The script first analyses the document, recording all frames with a certain label content and makes a setting record for those frames based on the label content. Then it imports text and place images according to those settings.

    Under Mojave it takes just above one minute for the script to do the job – both when started with a soap call and directly from an editor. Processing time is varying between 1:02 and 1:12, which I consider to be a ”natural” variation.

    After the upgrade, the scores for editor executions have varied between 2:08 and 3:44. Started with soap the time varies between 3:30 and above 5 minutes

    The increase in process time – at least 300 to 500 percent with soap calls – is of course unacceptable. The large variations is also a problem in itself

    Notes:
    • The process time scores above referes to the time amount from when the script starts to work with the document until it’s finished with the document (so any delays outside of the document processing is not included).

    • We cannot pick out certain actions that has slowed more than other. The recording of document content is heavily decelerated – taking between 40 seconds and 2 minutes and more, compared to taking a few seconds with Mojave. Likewise, the process to place text and images, fit images to the frame and so on have slowed down to the same extent.

    • To confirm the problem, we have also done the same tests on a fresh machine delivered from Apple with Catalina pre-installed, a lot of RAM and no other installations than the necessary for doing these tests – with the same disappointing results.

18. "Go-to-Folder" Shortcut Not Working When InDesign Opens Finder

    About two updates prior to the last 2021 update that was released, the shortcut Commnand+Shift+G that would normally open the "Go-to-Folder" dialog box when doing something like relinking an image stopped working.

    Unlike windows, where a file's location path can be copied and pasted at any time into an address bar, the "Go-to-Folder" menu can only be accessed via shortcut on Mac (as far as I am aware). It is very inconvenient to have to go through every folder individual folder, when I want to relink or place something, instead of being able to directly go to where the file is located.

19. Windows 10

    In Windows 10, when I close an InDesign file, and open another without closing InDesign completely, my keyboard functionality ceases to work. I have to relaunch InDesign.

    This happened on my previous laptop of 7 years, and now does the same with my new one which is 2 weeks old. I thought it was just because my old laptop was getting old, but since it's doing the same on a new computer, I figured it must be a bug.

    Using the latest Windows 10 20H2 version, latest InDesign to date of 7 Nov 2020 (v 16.0 x64), Lenovo Legion Y540.

    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
    Installed RAM 8.00 GB
    System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 20H2
    Installed on ‎10/‎30/‎2020
    OS build 19042.610
    Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0

20. InDesign 2021 is not allowing me to open files created in previous version

    I cannot open any files created in previous version. I had to reinstall InDesign 2020 to be able to do my work. InDesign 2021 is giving me a message about damaged files, is trying to repair them but without any success. So this version needs to be fixed asap.
