Footnotes *from different text frames* in *separate text frame*
New footnotes in InDesign 14 does not suite for complex layouts with many text frames and tables on one page.
There should be also a solution for footnotes collected from different text frames / tables on a page.
Collected in a separate text frame.7 votes -

More powerful use of Conditional Text
Conditional text is a great tool, but limited. It could be used to apply formatting to text that would survive the "clear overrides" of para or char styles.
I can see that conditional formatting that changed the text itself could be difficult to implement (such as font size, applying italics, small caps, no break, no hyphenation...) but if it could do that, it could prove very handy to giving a persistent formatting "style" that would not be affected by clearing overrides.
Also: Sometimes highlighting or underlining is not appropriate. I'd like a flag in the margin that marks the beginning…

Smart hyphenation
A great feature would be if InDesign could add hyphenation rules automatically when when using discretionary hyphens. A pop-up window that asks if you want this word to hyphenate on every instance of the word where you insert the hyphen the first time. I find it a bit too tedious to make new H-rules for every word. This is very relevant for non-english languages where the the pre-defined H-rules isn't very good. There is probably better ways to to this, but I think its time InDesign's hyphenation feature get a little bit smarter.

Hyperlinks from word
It would be good/wonderful, if the hyperlinks from a word document would import like the endnotes and footnotes. Right now it takes a lot of my time to enter them manually in long documents. When you have approximately 10-15 hyperlinks per page in a 60 pages documents it takes too much times...

Enable copy-paste of text / text frames without breaking cross references
Today, copying a text frame with cross references breaks them - including copying text with cross references. This is very problematic and very difficult to discover during editing - and the only solution is to create the cross reference manully again. Very cumbersome.

Retain font styles when copying/pasting text from Photoshop to InDesign.
I prefer to mockup print projects in Photoshop (including text) because I have faster/better control when I want to edit images and previsualize the end result. Once I have my final layout I switch to InDesign and replace the text so it's not bitmapped before printing. It would be great if I could just copy and paste the text from Photoshop to InDesign and it would retain the font style (size, weight, color, tracking, leading, etc) rather than having to make all of those adjustments by hand. Currently copying/pasting font styles works between Photoshop and Illustrator, but not PS and…

Spellcheck only "real" copy.
Add an option in "Check Spelling" to tell it to "ignore automatically generated placeholder text". So that Spellcheck would flag only real copy. I often use both in my documents and it's hard to check a 40-pg document when it keeps stopping at several paragraphs of placeholder text.

Integrate Optical Margin Alignment into Paragraph tab
Currently, the Story tab is a standalone tab, offering only one checkbox: the Optical Margin Alignment option. This functionality, in my opinion, is closely related to paragraph adjustments, such as paragraph alignment within text boxes. Given its nature, it seems more intuitive and efficient to integrate Optical Margin Alignment within the Paragraph tab or the main text formatting panel.
Adding the Story tab to my workspace alongside essential tabs like Character, Paragraph, and various styles consumes more horizontal screen space than necessary. Once positioned next to other panels, the tab's label, "Story," becomes difficult to read due to the limited…

Update text box design so that the middle bottom anchor point isn't almost always hidden by "Explore more text options" / "O" icon
The text box needs an update. I can almost never adjust the size of my text boxes from the middle bottom anchorpoint, butcause the "O" icon for "Explore More Text Options" is on top of it or near enough to it that I can't select the anchorpoint. I need to be able to resize text boxes from the bottom middle anchorpoint. Adjusting the size with the bottom right anchorpoint isn't a usually a good option because the width will change slightly.
Fix this issue by moving the O icon away from any anchorpoints outside of the box somewhere.

Favourite font groups
I'd like to be able to save some of my commonly used fonts into groups or themes of my choosing, such as calligraphic, infographic, corporate, Christmas etc.
I realise InDesign (and other Adobe apps) already offer favourites and filters but the favourites list can get rather long and the filters don't always capture the fonts I'm actually trying to find, especially with non Adobe fonts. For example, I have a font called 'Beauty Night Script' installed and it doesn't show up in either the script, handwritten or decorative font filters.
I think this feature could be quite useful for people…

Data merge and type formatiing
We data merge price tickets for retail from excel into InDesign. It would save so much formatting time if you could change the data merge fields 'case'.
For example: could I change a data merge field to Sentence case, or Title Case etc? I know the feature ALL CAPS works but that's it?6 votes -
Add support for language based typographic rules
Each language has its own set of traditional rules related to hyphens, dashes, quotation marks, punctuation, hyphenation, spaces etc. Most of the rules are pretty simple and it is very easy to apply them using a list of search-replace sequences.
To significantly improve the quality of typesetting, Adobe should provide users a tool to clean up texts (remove additional spaces for instance) and create output matching the style guides and orthographic rules.
The rules should be defined for each language and/or region. There are different quotation marks in German used in Germany or in Switzerland; in French used in France…

Multi Select Words within text
A feature long missing is the ability to select non continuous words within a text block. It seems like such an obvious need to me.
Ie in the above text, I want to format the words - long, select, such and me - to be inbound or a different size, or caps. Unless I am mistaken, this would need to be done individually. Just like you can easily do in WORD!!!!!

Different line lengths with paragraph shading
Paragraph shading is great but even if you choose to set it to text instead of column, the length of each line is the same for all lines of the paragraph (the longest one). It would be great to have the ability to set it according to the length of each line. For now, you have to use paragraph rules wit a hard return at the end of each line.

Make column rules continue in footnotes
If you have a text frame with multiple columns and the footnotes split into columns, the column rules do not continue in the footnotes.

Colouring and user-order of font menu
User customized font menu. Colours and the ability to order the fonts exactly how you want. . This makes it so easy to slide to the part of the menu to grab a font you know. This was done in the 1990's by Now Utilities on OS7, 8 and 9. Bring it on!!! It was SO fast to find your fonts. I had blue for Serif, red for San Serif, green for Script and so on. Colour coding is great for many features.
