Try closing the document that shows the Background Tasks as queued. If the Auto-Activate Adobe Fonts option has been selected and you are connected to the internet, fonts in your document should get auto-activated.
Please try once again and let us know.—

An error occurred while saving the comment Juliet commentedYes! It would also need to allow for a cell that has multiple lines, so that the row height does not equal a single line of text, but allows multiple lines, all of them sitting on the baseline grid. So for example, a row with 2 lines' worth of text is 2 baseline grid lines wide, and both lines of text can sit on the baseline, while a row with 1 line's worth of text is 1 baseline grid wide.

Takes forever to open, has to find multiple "linked files" even when no images are present. Currently, it's been 30 minutes and it still hasn't saved an IDML version. Yes, I have more than enough memory & CPU power in my system. There's just something really funky & wrong about the latest versions that makes e v e r y t h i n g t a k e f o r e v e r.

An error occurred while saving the comment Juliet commentedI've been waiting 4.5 hours to update a document with cross-references. This is ridiculous. These things don't work. I can't do anything else when cross-references are in a document. I will never use them again. I'm using InDesign 2021, but I can't even tell you which version exactly, that's how frozen the whole program is right now.

An error occurred while saving the comment Juliet commentedYes, please! I have been trying to update a document with cross references for 4.5 hours. I want so badly to just shut the dang things off. I can't do anything else with these things in the document. I will never ever ever use them again.

Adobe InDesign teamAn error occurred while saving the comment Juliet commentedFor me, this happens when I open a file with cross-references
Can also thereafter happen
When I add pages
When I add an image
When I add a file to a book
Etc.In short, it's happening a lot.
I'm using 2021, version 16.3.

Closed all documents, still spinning. The only thing that got it to stop was completely shutting down the application & restarting.
Huge time sink.
As another user points out, you should be able to stop the task with the Background Tasks pop-up window.
