[ID-4272089]Grouped objects does not go back to original layers when ungrouped if 'Ungroup Remembers Layer' is enabled
- Version of Adobe InDesign is v21.0
- Create several layers, put an object on each layer, make sure that 'Ungroup Remembers Layers' is checked, group all objects, and ungroup.
- Expected result: all objects remain on the layer they were on before they were grouped.
- Actual results: all objects are on the top layer or the highest layer on which there was an object that was within the group
In my opinion this should be treated as a hotfix. This is ruining the workflow and messes up the files that then need to either be fixed or rolled back to previous versions. I cannot state how urgent this is, it is absurd that a basic option such as this one is suddenly broken.
The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2026(v21.0.1.006). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application, click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

Do we have an ETA on a fix for this yet? This is critical to daily workflow and ingrained in the design process to use group and ungroup with layers and have a group remain selected when ungrouped!
The bug regularly impedes tasks. Just one example is a design with a logo strip over other elements, I might group 10 logos on one layer, have the background of the strip on another layer, then group those as a whole to move the strip, then group that strip with a heading to move those together, AND group those with the entire feature block (heading/image/image adjustment layer if the image uses more than one colour or effect overlay) to move the entire block as a whole. I'd have background on one layer, adjustments on another, followed by art (heading and logo strip background etc) then a top layer with those logos from the logo strip. I turn off certain layers to allow quick easy size/spacing/position adjustment and selection of relevant items without selecting backgrounds or adjustment layers. I group and ungroup these frequently to adjust parts of them, and it's really not efficient to have to keep dragging things to their original layers, and without this feature I have to manually unclick the background, adjustment layers (sometimes there might be 3 of those) etc every time I want to move something on top of it, or to change spacing of logos i'd have to click each one - super tedious.
This comes up about 10 times AN HOUR across various indesign file purposes and intentions for print and digital. It's not a small thing, it's critical to workflow. It's long been the reason I use indesign over illustrator for tasks that could be done in Illustrator (which has had this ungroup putting things on one layer issue for a while). It really does negate the purpose of layers if it keeps moving everything to the same one!
We've been slowly inching towards using figma at work and things like this are one reason why the team want to make the change.

Für mich ist es eine Katastrophe. Es behindert meine Arbeit massiv und kostet jede Menge Zeit. )o:
Der Hammer ist, die neuen Datein lassen sich nicht auf die 2025-Version zurück konvertieren. -

This is a catastrophic impediment to workflow for those of us working with documents containing several layers with thousands of elements.
This was a bug in a previous version, so how Adobe can release a version without testing a known past issue is beyond reckless or if they released it knowing the bug existed that shows complete disrespect for the users that depend on that feature for their day to day work.
PLEASE get this fixed and release a fix ASAP. It is negatively impacting my work/business every day.
Also, as Luis mentioned, the deselecting everything upon ungrouping is a major annoyance and time drain when I'm going back to re-select hundred+ elements at a time.

when ungrouping, the ungrouped elements are not selected any more. So, we should select them again one by one. Can you please fix it

I wanted to reiterate that the fact it no longer remembers layers on ungroup is critical to workflow and I’m so glad it’s being worked on, but also it used to stay selected when ungrouped which was handy as well. I hope this also gets fixed?

ID 21 When use the shortcut to ungroup, InDesign ungroups but also deselect everything, which is very annoying since it used to keep the previously grouped objects selected.
