Bulleted and numbered lists, "Restart Numbers at This Level After:" behavior is not consistent
- create a document with "Bulleted and numbered lists" and List Type "Numbers" * There are 3 types of headings and 3 levels.
- set the levels so that each heading is renumbered according to the higher level heading. 3.
- re-set the numbering style to "none" or remove "^#" from the "Number" to indicate numbering
- the numbers are no longer re-numbered.
Workaround: set Mode to "Start At: 1" instead of "Continue from Previous Number
I had quite a bit of trouble finding a workaround. Also, it is often the case that the higher levels do not want to display numbers, so the…

Style mapping no longer seems to work between Word and InDesign
Previously I was able to import Word (v16.62) documents into InDesign and map its Paragraph Styles to my INDD template's Paragraph Styles.
In the latest version of InDesign (17.2.1), this does not seem to work, and the Paragraph Styles only come in in a single style.
I have gone back and tested this using old files, which previously worked, but they now do not work: the Style Mapping doesn't seem to register at all.

indesign cc 2021 16.0.1 STILL does not preserve styles text formatting
Indesign cc 2021 16.0.1 STILL does not preserve styles text formatting DESPITE being checked in preferences whether being placed from word OR copy pasted from a document that has the formatting and styles (in this case, Apple's Pages having opened a word doc.)
No matter what, it does NOT keep formatting of text being imported/pasted/placed into an open indesign document.
what gives?

Styles for buttons and forms
It would be nice to be able to create styles for the buttons and forms so you don't have to manually adjust it when your document has heaps of the same fields.
Even just being able to change the default settings would be useful. I have to waste so much more time having to manually change each field setting.Who decided that Minion Pro, 12pt and scrollable was what people wanted?
Also, why would a checkbox by default be checked, most of the time you want a checkbox not to be checked when creating a form??3 votes -
InDesign Script - find/replace - store in a variable what is in "find what", "find format"
Tested in InDesign, any from CC to CC2020.
I was needed a script which can store whatever is there in one or more variables the following:
- the format from "find format",
- the format from "change format".
The code below doesn't works if the paragraph (character) style is in a group style.var currFindPrefs = app.findGrepPreferences.properties;
var currChangePrefs = app.changeGrepPreferences.properties;
//do something
//reset preferences
app.findGrepPreferences.properties = currFindPrefs;
app.changeGrepPreferences.properties = currChangePrefs;
The variables can't store the style that are in group styles.
Only those that are outside of any group.Please see attached Image.

Source Sans Pro latest version's properties have changed
The latest version of Source Sans pro (version 3.006) appears to start lower down text frames than the previous version did which messes up months worth of existing projects. When I go to edit the copy, it all shifts down the text box by a few millimetres.
In the attached image you can see two of the same text boxes - one is correct, and one has shifted down due to the font updating.
I've spoken with InDesign support who said to log the issue here.
As a temporary fix I have downloaded version 2.040 of the font from Github…

Numpad bug with paragraph styles
Loading an old Indesign file (version 2016 or older) in the new Version Indesign CC2020 causes a new bug.
1.) I use Indesign CC 15.0.1 (2020)
2) Open an old file of Indesign with many defined paragraph styles (from 2016 or older) --> try to edit some texts use text cursor klick in a textbox and type a 1, a 3 or a 4 on the numpad.
3) I expect that the numbers 1, 3 or 4 to be typed.
4) The paragraph style changes to another style without any shortcut set in the file or the paragraph style.3 votes -
Paragraph style overrides key quick not working
When I select a paragraph and want to keep the character styles, but override the paragraph levels styles while holding down Ctrl/Shift click, this quick key does not work. Nothing happens. It used to work for CC2017. Ctrl click works for overriding character styles though. This is a nuisance, especially when it worked before
3 votesTo remove paragraph-level overrides, but preserve character-level overrides and character styles, in the Paragraph Styles panel, hold down Shift+Ctrl and click on the Clear Overrides button at the bottom of the panel.
To remove character-level overrides, but preserve paragraph formatting overrides, hold down Ctrl as you click on the Clear Overrides button at the bottom of the Paragraph Styles panel.Please also see this article: https://indesignsecrets.com/5-ways-of-removing-overrides-applied-to-paragraphs.php

Character Panel/Properties Panel font display font not correct for GREP-Styles
Indesign CC 14.0.1, x64
IF a GREP-style is at work formatting found text-style-ranges, then the font style dropdown in character panel/properties panel/control panel, may not correctly reflect the font in a selection . Please see screenshot attached.
In the screenshot, a paragraph format grep style has applied a character style "bold" to the word "Foto:" and "Text:". The user has selected the characters OT from the word "Foto:" as an example. The character panel font style should say "Bold", ... as you can see "Light caps" is NOT correct.

Cell styles are not selected in the panel when applied through a Table style
InDesign CC 2018
Set up a table style and apply it to a table.
In the Table style, define a Cell style to be used.
In the CELL style, define a Paragraph style to be used. In the same Cell style also set a Text inset (to be sure you see that the cell style is in effect).Now put the text cursor inside a table cell, and notice how the currect Table style is selected in the Table styles panel, and also the correct paragraph Style in the Paragraph Panel.
But in the Cell Style panel, there is no…3 votes -
two font sizes listed in character panel
I am applying a paragraph style and for some reason the font size was not changing to the size specified. There is no character style applied to the text to override the paragraph style. I did notice that my character panel showed two font sizes, with the second size, the one I want, in parenthesis. Not sure what is going on here.
3 votesThe font size in parentheses is the new font size when the document has been resized using Liquid Layout’s Scale rule. The font size outside the parentheses is the original font size – that is, it looks like this:
Original Font Size(New Font Size) – eg., 12 pt(8.1).
Have you selected an Alternate Layout page where this rule was applied?Adobe InDesign team

When flowing text in multiple textboxes, Object Styles settings are ignored
- Indesign 13.0.1 OSX
- Create an object style and set it as the default for new Text Frames. Create a new Text Frame. Click on the linking box at the corner and hold down alt to link the Text Frame to a number of new TF's. Draw a number of new linked TF's with the alt key pressed.
- All Text Frames should have the Object Style set as default
- The new TF's have an OS of [None]
3 votesHi,
This has been the behaviour since the beginning. See the link https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/object-styles.html where it states “This category is applicable only if the object is an unthreaded text frame.”Please let us know any use-cases where this can be beneficial so that we can process this as a “Feature modification request”
You can ctrl(cmd)+a in a text frame and then apply the paragraph style as a workaround.

Character style based running header text variable does not pick up character styles applied by nested line styles
As with Grep styles the text variable character style is not found when it is created using Nested Line Styles. This means I have to use normal nested styles and add end nested style markers into the text. Not ideal or as fully automatic as I would like.

Adobe InDesign 2024 (v19.0) - Unable to create own style pack (error popup)
When I try to create a new style pack I get the dialog to apply different styles. When choosing the according styles for Heading, Subheading,... I only get an error pop up. When confirming, I get another alert, a couple of times in a row (for every following style to apply one). After confirming all alerts I get one or more text frames filled with example text (no specific format / settings) on the first page of the document.

Drop Cap size, is based on next character
Indesign 2023 Hebrew Version
Macbook Pro M1When i create a drop cap, the size of the drop cap is changing based on the next character after the drop cap, it only happens when the leading is fixed, when the leading is auto, it just moves up and down based on the size of the next character.
As you can see in the attached images, both paragraphs have the same style but when i change the size of the character after the drop cap the size or the leading of the drop cap changes2 votes -
Paragraph Border rendering is filled in black -- randomly.
For two years now, paragraphs with double lines and a fill between the lines render as solid black randomly when building PDF output for printing. It's usually the first paragraph border that is rendered incorrectly, and if the PDF is recreated again and again, eventually an error-free PDF is produced.
See attached screencap.

Unable to Underline Numbering in List
I have been facing an issue while trying to underline the numbering in a list.
I am able to underline the text, but not the numbering.
The character style is also not helping me in this case.
