[ID-4274243] InDesign clearing Undo stack frequently
Undo not working, InDesign 21.02x64
16.12.2025
As recently as yesterday, it was possible to perform more than 50 undo actions, but today only 1–2 steps are available, and my colleagues are experiencing the same issue.
Hi,
Thank you for reporting the issue. We have been able to reproduce the issue, and it is currently under investigation.
Analysis
- We have been able to reproduce the issue on Windows, and it is currently under investigation.
- The root cause is that the UNDO stack is getting purged and the issue is getting manifested in History Panel.
- The issue is intermittently(depends on when InDesign chooses to purge the stack) getting reproduced on Windows machine only. The issue is not observed on Macintosh.
- It has started to be reported by customer recently 14-Dec-2025 onwards. A Windows update has been pushed on 09 December 2025 for Win11 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2. Refer to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/december-9-2025-kb5071417-os-build-22631-6345-5b7b15d8-96a2-4c8f-a61d-b5e1bc9618f8

Absolutely ridiculous this issue is even occuring, and still isn't fixed. I constantly work on large projects, and to only be able to step back a few times in a program we pay a dear subscription for, is abysmal.

It is extremely difficult to work like this – urgently awaiting an update.

OMG, when will you release a fix? It's been an entire month dealing with this HUGE problem!

Hi, i'm having the same problem. It's very annoying because it makes my work much more difficult and I urgently need to be able to submit my work.

UNDO feature is bugged and doesn't work properly. Need it fixed asap as it's affecting daily workflow. It allows only 2-3 UNDOs and sometimes only one.

There are really two issues, from my standpoint:
Ctrl-Z is limited to three or so tries and mouse clicks cause disappearing text.
Neither problem shows up in my ID 2023 on same computer.
I am using InDesign 2025 20.5.1 x64
SYSTEM: DESKTOP Win 11 Home 24H2 - Up to date. Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KF (3.20 GHz). Installed RAM: v16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)] Microsoft Defender. Malwarebytes Pro. BackBlaze on continuous backup (on demand backup does not make any difference)
When I use a mouse (any mouse---keyboard does not cause a problem) to click on a word or phrase to edit it, text disappears, and feels as if there is a momentary hanging. The Ctrl-Z works to bring the text back (but only for three tries in recovering edits) and it also reverts the edit I was trying to make.
I have to use SAVE AS frequently and that slows the problem of disappearing text but only briefly.
Sounds like Adobe is closing in on a possible solution. (Meanwhile, I am staying far, far away from ID 2026) -

Just for your information:
My regular Dell desktop XPS8700 RAM configuration is 16GB.
This morning I added 1 extra 8GB stick (from a pair that was lost in the drawer, they used to give me Win10 blue screen errors in the past) summing up to 24GB.
And...
InDesign problems are GONE! Undo is working perfectly again! *No more disappearing history states!* Infine CTRL+Z is back!
So, it seems the problem is related somehow to the 16GB of RAM setups.

This is happening to me after the 2026 InDesign update. Sometimes I will change some text and can't even undo that more than two steps. I'm on a remote cloud computer so there's little I can do to improve RAM or anything so your extremely delayed solution better not involve anything with that.

Same here, waiting for update with solution

All our office PCs have 16 GB of RAM. After reading some comments below, we tried adding an 8 GB stick to one of them, and for now this seems to have solved the problem.
We're still waiting for a fix, though...
A forced system update is not an acceptable solution. -

...and really annoying that you have to register and log in another place (this site) in order to state that this is super critical. Look at all the comments here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-undo-history-clears-itself-without-user-action/td-p/15631507

This is very frustrating for me as well! The most undos I can have right now is 5. Not acceptable as this is an imperative function of this software.

I have two PCs with Windows, and the one with 32GB of memory doesn’t have the problem, but the one with 16GB is having the problem.

I am paying for Creative Cloud every month and this issue with only 1-3 undos is making my work much harder. I need this to be fixed as soon as possible!!!!!

It does seem to be a 16 GB RAM on Windows issue. I had this problem incessantly when my PC had 16 GB of RAM - really annoying. As soon as I increased the memory to 32 GB, the problem went away and undo functionality returned to normal. So I guess InDesign requires 32 GB RAM now.
