[ID-4262670][ERROR(RSC-005) in EPUB Checker]InDesign 20.3 creates target attributes to every link in EPUB
The latest InDesign version (20.3) creates target="_blank" attributes to every link when exported as EPUB. Doesn't matter if the link contains URL or it's a link from a text anchor. The latest EPUB Check version (5.2.1) gives an error with every link that doesn't have href attribute which means every text anchor is invalid.
For example:
<h1 id="_idParaDest-1" class="Header-1"><a id="_idTextAnchor000" target="_blank"></a>Foreword</h1>
In EPUB Check this is an error:
ERROR(RSC-005): Error while parsing file: element "a" missing required attribute "href"

The fix for this issue is available in the InDesign PreRelease build(v20.4.0.025) and above.

Thank you - the PreRelease build(v20.4.0.025) fixed my issue with target="_blank" insertions.

EPubs exported from latest update (version 20.3.1) will not validate on ePub Checker. Pages and pages of errors.

When exporting an EPub from an InDesign document with footnotes, redundant span elements with »target« attributes are inserted. (see screenshot)
Problem:
This is not valid XHTML and leads to errors when validating the EPub.EPUB (Reflowable) v2.0.1 and v3.0
InDesign 20.3.1
macOSTo reproduce the error:
1. Create empty document
2. Insert text frame
3. Insert footnote
3. Export document as EPub version 3.0.Discussion:

I processed my ebook in InDesign 2025 the exact same way I did in InDesign 2024 and when I uploaded the epub to Kobo, the new version it gave me 28 Resource Failures. I went back to the old version of InDesign, reformatted the book exactly the same way and it uploaded fine. No errors. I've attached the epub critical error list from Kobo.

Still present in 20.3.1 unfortunately.
As of now, only working with 20.2 or manually / automatically removing target="_blank" in the EPUB will let it pass epubcheck. -

Is there a workaround for this error yet?

I had successfully created an EPUB, and I had to make a revision to it and upload it to the distributor again. I could not get the new EPUB to validate. I saw this post, and I reverted to an earlier version, and I exported the file again. This time I was successful.

Every other update messes up the epub export ... please remember that some of us actually use this function!
