Data merge doesn't work with UTF-8 unicode file
DataMerge is failing to import UTF 8 text as Unicode.
- Create UTF 8 Text file for merging.
- Open previously functional InDesign document with keys already established.
- Select data source
- Choose text file (UTF8 no BOM) (if you have BOM, file isn't recognized)
- Tick show import options (never needed to do this before)
- Make sure its Unicode.
- Data still comes in in ASCII even though I chose Unicode. This has to be a merge problem because I can cut and paste the data into the InDesign file without issue.
Reported version - Adobe InDesign CC 14.02

Hi everyone,
I'm experimenting some issue with data merge.
When I try to import a CSV file using Unicode UTF-8 (I'm using Apple Number to do that) inDesign simply ignored encodage and brought many undesirable characters to my import.
I tried to fix that enabling option when importing CSV file, but if I change from ASCII to Unicode nothing happens. -

I agree with Bastian S.
You need to use Unicode UTF16, not UTF8. UTF8 does not seem to be supported.
When it says Unicode and nothing more, it always means UTF-16, or so I believe.
But in any case, Adobe needs to be more clear about this, in the dropdown options. -

Data merge doesn't work with UTF-8 unicode file (CSV or TXT).
The sheet file aren't embbed to indesign project and can't use data.It only works with ASCII and SHIFT_JIS but they didn't render well special characters.
Could you please fix this bug please ?
Best regards -

Saving the Data as UTF-16 txt file with Excel always works fine for us. - We also had a lot of issues with UTF-8.
