stuck on type tool
I'm stuck on the Type tool. It won't let me select or change my tools at all. I've had to shut down and restart three times now. Whenever I get into the type tool, it stays and I can't get out or click anywhere else. Keyboard shortcuts do not work
Hello All,
Thank you for your patience all this while.
We had launched our investigation into the matter to get to the root cause of the problem. As the part of our investigation, we had reached out to many of you personally over email.
We have concluded our investigation and have come up with few findings.
1. For many of the users the issue got fixed after updating InDesign to a newer version.
2. For few, the issue was intermittent and is no longer reproducible.
4. For majority of the users, the underlying cause of the performance issue was identified to be related to switching between tools, or other lags
Over the time this thread has become too generic to serve its purpose effectively. As per your feedback and the outcome of our investigation we have created multiple threads to address each root cause separately and effectively.
If you are facing any slowness in InDesign or seeing any other performance issue, we request you vote for the relevant thread or create a new thread specifying the action/workflow which is slowing you down.
We seek your support in our continuous effort to improve InDesign.

Editing your text with the Edit in Layout command (CTRL+Y) and then exiting seems to fix the problem. This took me too long to figure out.
↑This help me A LOT! I use this to fix this issue.

I can only use the text tool. I can't select any other options in the tool tray.
I can select options if I hold down CTRL but then it reverts back to text tool

Same thing happening to me only since applying update yesterday to InDesign 14.0.3 (Mac 10.14.6). Trashed prefs and caches — this only helped the constant "beach ball" with every action. Still have this issue where type tool is selected — Hit "V" to get Selection Tool — after about a second or two, reverts to Type Tool _every_ time by itself with no further interaction on my part.
Same if clicking once (on Selection Tool) in Tool Panel — reverts to Type Tool.BUT bizarrely I can switch to the Selection Tool if I _RIGHT-CLICK_ in the Tool Panel.
And another update — Troubleshooter's monkey wrench — this occurs 100% on only some documents; some documents the tools work correctly. I haven't found any correlation yet.

I have exactly the same problem right now. I have to work on the XML structure of my document and I am stuck on the text tool. How can I fix this?

I had the same. It seemed to happen after I opened a V13 file along with an IDML version. Then whatever I did, once I selected the type tool it would not allow me to select anything else. I Tried all the fixes that were posted and none worked. REverted to version 13 and all good.

My copy of InDesign just did this. Restarting my computer, Creative Cloud and InDesign have no effect. I can't do anything now!

This has happened to me several times, too. Thank you for the tip about editing in Story Editor as a workaround.

If I edit in the text editor and then close out, it fixes the issue. This is frustrating.
