InDesign performance issue: Text disappears while editing
When editing a text box, the text disappears.
I have to switch the display mode (Overview > Normal or Normal > Overview) to make the text appear again.
This bug occurs frequently (10~20 times a day) but I did not identify what is the trigger.
Version 2017.1
Build 12.1.0.56 x64
Windows 10 x64
We're happy to announce that the fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign - version 17.2 that is available to download from Creative Cloud Desktop application.
Please update to this latest InDesign version to get the fix.

Ok, sounds like it's working! At first, I installed the 17.1 version by mistake, so it did nothing. After reading the message explaining about the versions and how to download it, I installed the correct version, 17.2, and, since yesterday, I had no more text disappearing issues. Yay!

I'm not sure if others have had this issue, but when I downloaded the beta build it told me my beta was out of date and didn't open – willing to try anything at this point to solve this problem but I can't seem to get the beta working.

InDesign 17.1When deleting text, other text which is not selected to be deleted, also vanishes. I am laying out a poetry book with linked text boxes and the translator has complainined that some of the text is missing. This bug is increasing my workload and making me look unprofessional. I've read other comments about vanishing text, but I can't see any which is specifically mine.

Still the same here..

The only way to successfully deal with this ridiculous issue until the final fix is released and we don't hear about it again for a few years (this issue is on and off and goes back to August 2017) is to keep Activity monitor open and make sure you don't go over 80% memory usage. So 16GB M1 Mac mini has to be under 13.5GB total. Basically that means not running Photoshop while using InDesign.

Today I am writing SOPs for my department. I am composing as I am typing. If I need to rephrase something and I go to highlight the text I am moving for instance, after I copy it (Command X) and go to paste it all the text on the page just disappears. I have to go to my text frame and move it up or down to get the text to reappear. Just writing one SOP this morning my text disappeared at least 20 times, this is in a hour. I'm not sure why changing the size of the text frame brings the text back.
I went back to the file I had written after your reply, and tried to replicate the disappearing text. I copied and placed some of the text, the text disappeared, but when I clicking in the text box it reappeared.
Thanks, Susan

Hello!
I downloaded the Prerelease to see if it fix my issue with copy disappearing as I edit. The copy STILL disappears. This seems to happen the most when I hit space bar-- through this editing process. Then I have to stop- and switch to zoom and zoom out or in for copy in the box to re-appear-- doesn't matter which direction Or I have to scroll up or down-- and copy only re-appears if it was out of my viewer space. Meaning if the whole paragraph was going the length of the page-- and i scrolled up enough that the top of the paragraph was out of my view and then scrolled back down-- only the top that was out of view would appear again.. but the rest of the paragraph would still be missing.

It is not fixed in 17.2.0.09, seemed almost worse...such a pain.

I am looking forward to trying the beta, however, I applied to the prerelease program, downloaded, but when I launch the app, I get a message saying the Beta has expired...
Edit: on further investigation, it seems that despite signing up to the Prerelease program, I don't see the option for pre-release app, through either web or the desktop app (previously I had erronously tried to download from 'Beta' - which appears to be incorrect)

Not fixed in prerelease version 17.7.1.
Update: Looking at the release notes it appears that 17.2.0.09 is a NEWER build than 17.7.1. Alas, it's not yet showing as available for me... sigh...

This is absolutely ridiculous – I know it can be hard to fix these things, but it impedes my workflow beyond reason. I pay far too much to have text disappear on me every other letter I type. I use an M1 Macbook Air. The only thing that gets it to go away is turning off "GPU Performance," but I really prefer animated zoom, not the old version, so I don't want to have to turn this off and on over and over again. Please fix this.

How can this still be going on for almost a year now???? When will this be fixed? A client just complained when they tried to make edits via a screen share with one of my team members.
Yes, we're Mac M1 users. This is hurting my business.

Can't believe this is still an issue - I mean it's fundamental to any layout program to be able to reliably see the copy you are typing. Come on Adobe, you are professional software that your users are paying monthly for - and this is a basic functionality issue. You can have all the bells and whistles you like, but your program is pretty useless if it cant perform these most basic of tasks.
I cant believe it is an Apple GPU issue, as EVERY other program I use (including other CC apps) does not suffer from this issue - which points to this being an InDesign issue.
Running an M1 Mac Mini, latest version of Indesign, tried turning off GPU Performance and in order to reproduce this issue - all I need to do is start typing, making using this software a real pain in the backside.

Guys, this thread goes back to August of 2017. InDesign is now the Land Rover of software.

Turning off GPU Performance in Preferences didn't work for me.

It's obviously a GPU-related problem. If you turn OFF the GPU Performance in Preferences, the text-disappearing disappears...
Adobe support said: it is an Apple GPU-driver problem!
Haha... Cinema4D and Blender work flawlessly but Indesign?
btw, a screenrecord about this problem:

Ravi and the Adobe ID team: As you've heard from others, the problem is still happening. If I can be of help, please contact me! I'm happy to screen share and show you where/when it's happening. I've noticed that it happens when deleting a segment of type, when copying and pasting type from one text box to another. Sometimes, it happens after hitting the return key. It happens only somewhat less when in Overprint Preview mode. And, like others have mentioned, this has only started happening for me since working on the new iMac with M1 chip. Thank you for trying to fix this problem that is making us crazy. :-(

This issue is not fixed.
I am using an 2021 M1 Macbook Air with 8GB of Ram OS 12.1 (Monterey) using InD 2022 v17.1. I have more than enough memory free as well.
Every time I edit a text field the text visual disappears and only reappears if I zoom in and out or move/scroll. Very annoying and adds huge amounts of time to jobs. Has been like this for the duration of owning an M1 (9 months). My work iMac which is Intel 2017 16GB same OS and Adobe version works fine. This issue seems to be specific to M1 for me.
Edit: The issue is resolved on overprint preview although that's not a practical solution when working on files with lots of texture, high res imagery, layer effects or nodes. It still needs to be resolved for 'typical display'.
Generally this has been reported by colleagues with 8GB Ram M1's, users with 16GB appear to be clear of the issue.

I like adobe suite because once you know a few of the programs pretty well, the others are easy top pick up. That said, having never used InDesign before today, I just assumed I was doing something wrong so I kept plugging away. Hours of wasted time fighting with disappearing text boxes. What a disappointment to find out it's just a poorly made program.
