  1. Section Styles

Often we need to apply styling, such as a shaded background, to not just an individual paragraph, but to a SECTION which is composed of multiple paragraphs.

There is no easy way to do this via style sheets. Duplicating all the individual paragraph styles again and adding the 'shaded' properties to each one is way too tedious and fussy.

It would be nice if we could have SECTION STYLES. This would function like a 'wrapper' encompassing multiple paragraphs. That way we could select a passage of text and easily apply things like shading, borders, and indents to it. See attached…

  2. Add a feature that allows you to predefine paragraph style spacing based on which style comes before or after it

I have set up some paragraph styles in my InDesign document that have space-before and space-after set on them. Some of the styles are for headers. When the headers precede a regular paragraph, I want the space to be there, but when they precede another header, I want there to be less space. In web development, I can write rules in CSS that say things like this:

    p { margin-top:10px; }
    h2 + p { margin-top:5px }

I am able to make the margin-top narrower on a <p> tag that is immediately preceded by an <h2> tag, but otherwise, it's…

  3. Allow object style to set the size of an object

One of my ongoing projects is design and layout of a scientific journal with 2 column pages. Columns are 264pt wide, and every issue has hundreds of images that have to be 264 pts wide. They all have the same object style applied. If it could specify their width and cause them to be resized as soon as I apply the style, it would save me a ton of time and repetition.

  4. Better Stroke Styles with Gap color

This is actually a crossover between objects and styles. When I do a custom striped stroke style with a gap color, the gap color peeks out behind the stroke. It appears both in InDesign and in the resulting PDF. That background color should not show.

  5. Parametric style.

Parametric style. What does it mean? In the description of the style, we have an additional field "Depends on", in which we indicate the Name of the selected Template. Now the same style will get different settings on different pages. For example, the alignment of the text in the block on the left pages will be on the left edge, and on the right - on the right.
If the brochure has different sections, the same style of headings and subheadings can have different colors. Example: the "cheese" section has yellow headings, and the "cherry" section has red headings. And…

  6. Style Description or Memo Field

When working with complex documents, it would be helpful to have a free text field for each paragraph and character style. I imagine using this field to describe how and when to use each style in the document. In many professional settings, this is usually done in a separate style guide document but that requires separate programs and windows to be open, where as this would allow the information to be presented and referenced as close as possible to where it is needed. In cases where a style guide exists, the field could be a page or paragraph reference back…

  7. Copy and paste text formatting and shape style using keyboard shortcuts instead of the $%#!! eyedropper

The eyerdropper is a slow solution. Indesign should allow us to copy and paste text formatting and shape style using keyboard shortcuts instead. You select the frame (text/shape), press SHIFT+OPT+C to copy the formatting and then use SHIP+OPT+V to paste it. Much, much faster....

  8. Would like to add: Automatically set the value of paragraph leading according to different situations.

Would like to add: Automatically set the value of paragraph leading according to different situations.

For example, A and B paragraph styles.
By default, B has paragraph margins set. But there are some cases where it doesn't need paragraph breaks.
For example, when there is A paragraph style in front of it, because A itself has paragraph spacing, the two together will be spaced very far apart.
The way I'm dealing with it now: create a new ‘B-none’ with no paragraph leading. But it's a lot of work and trouble.

If you can add the option to set when B meets…

  9. Make break line possible to numbering

When creating a numbered list, I would be able to force a break line after the numbering, as we are able to put tab or spacings

  10. Variables with long definitions to wrap to next line

Currently, variables do not break across lines. I have documents with tables and variables. If the variable has a long definition, I have to shrink the font to get the text to fit in the cell when it could easily wrap to the next line. FrameMaker's variables have this capability. InDesign should be able to do the same. PLEASE!

  11. Add cell style setting fort column width and row height

We periodically update our older catalogs with newer styles and much of the content is to provide dimensions for parts. Most of the time they have not had a style applied to them. This would be the same as the option already provided when a cell is selected. Being able to select a group of cells and applying a style with column and row height would be helpful.

Its actually the only item that isn't included from the cell options every other option is already available.

  12. Create (H) Header and (P) Paragraph style on same line to produce a TOC and 508 Accessible document (Run-in Running variable))

Create (H) Header and (P) Paragraph style on same line that will pickup the styles when I produce the TOC and make the document accessible.

I understand this can be done in FrameMaker.

If a programmer can make it happen in FrameMaker, they should be able to make it work in InDesign.

    Thank You, Linda

  13. Swap Dropper

Instead of simply using the eye dropper tool to copy the style from one item to another, it would be cool if there was an option to swap the styles between the two items.

  14. Add extra options to the "Add Bullets" panel, like search, resize, favourite, etc.

The "Add Bullets" panel is tiny and super limited. It should be possible to resize, search and even favourite your preferred glyphs to make the process much more efficient.

There should be an option to kern just one character using Character styles. At present there are only 3 option in Character style window.

  16. Tab in footnote prefix for aligned decimals

I have a document with over 100 footnotes. I need to align the decimals of every footnote. To do this, I expected to be able to set up in the footnote style an "align to decimal" tab, and then a "justify left" tab for the footnote content, and then a TAB prefix in the "Document Footnote Options." However, there seems to be no way to place a tab as a Footnote text prefix. Entering ^t does nothing, and it gets cleared as soon as I close the options window. Other text or even special characters like ^r for registered trademark…

  17. Allow object styles to be applies to all threaded text boxes

I have a couple of threaded text frames. I would like them to all have the same object style, which also includes a paragraph style in them.

As of now, indesign officially states that threaded text boxes can't share these settings. I can see why this makes sense in certain conflicting situations, but it is definitely required in many situations (just as I'm really needing it now).

I think it's fair for indesign to at least have it as an option that can be turned on or off - the option to apply object styles (e.g. paragraph styles) across threaded…

  18. Child object styles to inherit parent size and position

Object Style 1 includes width and/or height specs.
Object Style 2 is based on Object Style 1.
When Object Style 1's width/height specs are changed, they are not reflected in Object Style 2.
The only option seems to be 'Reset to base' in Object Style 2.

Please make it so that child object styles also inherit Size and Position settings.

  19. Exclude Parameters from Paragraph Styles

    A bit CSS-like.
E.g. exclude Character Color from a Paragraph Style, to allow changing all but color by editing the style.
Comes in handy when text is colored manually per story, but the typeface has to be changed for all stories.

  20. Super/Subscript Pair

A style which will display superscript and subscript values stacked over each other and only occupy a single character space within text. This would be similar to the MathML <msubsup>.

This functionality would allow for some STEM publishing to use InDesign natively rather than creating hacks (or using other programs) to present information needed this treatment.
