  1. Video - Object Style

Today I cannot add an object style to a video. I'm using object style to easy redefine layout. If I create a content holder I can define its size and location with object style. Once I add a video into the content holder, the object styles in the object style pane are disabled/grey.

  2. Select multiple, discontinuous paragraphs

When applying paragraph styles throughout a document, it is only possible to select multiple continuous paragraphs in one go. If I want to style all first level headings, for example, I have to click on each, apply the paragraph style and repeat and repeat and repeat... Often finding the appropriate style requires scrolling in the paragraph styles window. It would be very useful, and much quicker, to be able to select all headings and apply Head A (or whatever) in one click. This might be achieved by clicking in the paragraphs with a keyboard combination pressed or, as was done…

  3. ‘nth of type’ conditions for paragraph styles

In CSS, we can use an nth-of-type() selector to define behaviour for the nth instance of a style. For example, we can make all paragraphs have a first line indent, but use nth-of-type(1) to remove the indent from the first paragraph on the page. This feature also supports (odd) and (even) values for n.

This feature would be extremely useful in Indesign for a range of use cases. Importantly, it would eliminate the need for several styles when typesetting multiple-paragraph block quotes, interview dialogue (indenting/outdenting), drop caps on chapter openings, etc.

For full flexibility, I imagine the feature would offer…

  4. Use Image in Paragraph Style

It would be nice and super useful to have the ability to use images instead of solid colors in paragraph styles. for example:
image as text character color (like clipping), image as paragraph shading background, border image, rule image, image as the bullet, etc.

  5. Nested Styles - Add more options to apply them to END of a paragraph

When creating a nested style, the only options we have for its activation point are [through] *** or [up to] ***. This means they're designed to have an affect only at the START of a paragraph, and to work only from left to right. This is very inflexible, and it's frustrating to work around, especially if we want particular style variation to occur somewhere at the END of paragraph.

It would be really helpful if in addition to the two existing options, you added ones like [after] or [after first instance of] or [after nth instance of] or [before last…

  6. Style counters

I would find very helpful to have a counter near any style (in particular for tables, but can work with other styles too) that enlights the number of items to whom is assigned the style and add a function, similar to the error panel, in which one can scroll to the elements, double clicking, and be brought to the item itself.

  7. Right click a Style Sheet, Find this Style

For years I've been hoping for an option to right click a a specific style to FIND THIS STYLE in the document. Because we all name them differently, I sometimes need to find a Style in the document, rather than click all over the place to hunt it down.

I'm currently working with a manual that I did not create. There are 30 or 40 styles I have to clean up. I love the Select All Unused option, but now I have styles that I know I'm not using and they're still showing as existing somewhere in the document.

    Please…

  9. Character Style contestual to Paragraph Style

Suppose you have a text, for example an introduction, with some word (i.e. titles) in Italic in it. Now you decide that this text must be in Italic. So, all the titles in it that were in Italic must be in plain.
In CSS this is easy to do; you'll have something like span.title { font-style: italic; } with the variant p.intro span.title { font-style: normal; }.
I think it's a necessity quite frequent. In other similar scenario you may have to use different colors, different weights.

  10. Checkbox to exclude styles from output in »edit all export tags« panel

I'd love to exclude styles to be output into HTML, EPUB, etc. with a simple checkbox in the »edit all export tags« panel. Up to now, I have to delete styles that I don't want in the export every time before the export. The checkbox would save a lot of time with recurring work as journals etc.

  11. Vignette effect for frames

    Hi guys,

This would be a killing feature. There's NO WAY to automatically assign a vignette effect to a photo frame. I order to do that I have to:

    1) Emulate the effect . by assigning inner shadow to a frame. This is kind of ok but it has probblems: it's not a propper vignette (vignettes actually affect corners, kind of a radial gradient) and there is no way to apply a size that is relative to the frame (I know, this is not even possible anywhere).

    2) On a picture, I can select the content of the frame (the…

  13. Change one setting across styles

Changing one element for several styles at once is extremely important, and not only for fonts (for which obviously Replace Fonts can be used). For example, if you have an ebook localized into Japanese, you have to go style by style applying a different paragraph composer, kinsoku and mojikumi settings, etc.

  14. Keep All Paragraphs of the Same Style Together

In Paragraph Style Options/Keep Options or in Table of Contents Styles, add an option to keep all paragraphs of the same style together. This would be very helpful when creating tables of contents or, in some circumstances, bullet lists.

  16. Add "redefine style" button

I, and probably many other users, often use the "redefine style" button in the various style windows (mainly paragraph and object styles, but also character style etc.).

This is a very visual-centered iterative process, with a lot of tweaking, refining and tweaking again. And the "redefine style" is a key component in that process.

It should be reduced to a single click of a button, instead of right-clicking and choosing it from the menu - just as "clear overrides" has a button of it's own.

I've added the current paragraph stye menu, and an updated one with the dedicated "redefine…

  17. Object styles: Display performance

Add the Display performance option to Object Styles.

For example, I want all the barcodes in my files to be displayed at High Quality Display, but want all my photos to appear as Typical Display.

  18. Ability to apply color to some or all of the individual style names in paragraph/character style palettes.

It would be so great to be able to apply color to some or all of the individual style names in paragraph/character style palettes, the way we can in the drop-down tool palettes.

The InDesign interface is terribly small (compared to Illustrator or Photoshop) and even my special computer glasses -- in conjunction with a 43-inch monitor -- are unable to compensate. There are times when I have 30-50 styles for large projects but use particular ones consistently over the others. I have a very hard time picking these out without stopping to stare, get close, examine the palette --…

  19. Cmd K should create a Hyperlink

I find myself constantly hitting Cmd + K when trying to add a hyperlink in InDesign and always going "GAH!" because that keystroke opens the preferences panel.

With InDesign trying to be competitive in the online publishing department, I recommend using the same keystroke most other programs use (Google, Word). Even if it's not the same quick command, hyperlinks should be easy to add.

  20. Adding Ordinal Format Options to Text Variables

I'm using Text Variables to show when the last time a document was modified. Currently, it outputs as "December 30, 2020", however, I would like it to be formatted with an ordinal option so it would display as "December 30th, 2020". Note the "TH" after the 30. So Xst, Xnd, Xrd and Xth would be displayed on the appropriate number.

Thanks in advance for the consideration and all the best!
