This is a must-have feature - I was shocked when I discovered it didn't exist.

Agree! A multi-cursor is a must, must, must! I use it all the time as well in Visual Studio Code. :)

This would be great as an avid user of Visual Studio Code. I am willing to assist in development or testing if desirable.

What would it take to get Adobe to prioritise this?
It is blatantly obvious that many InD users would greatly favour this functionality.

I think we need this kind of feature that is existing inside Brackets, and, as I've been told, Word. And I know that inDesign's precise text formatting would make it more complicate than in a text only workflow.

Absolutely. It boggles my mind that this isn't possible in InDesign, or Illustrator, yet it is possible in Adobe coding software.
