  2. Default frame size

I'd like a preference setting to preset the frame width for when you paste text into InDesign.
By default, the text frames are 52,917 mm wide (which is 150 pt, but some of us work with mm); I'd like to set the default to a different value, say 100 mm.

  3. Column Guides and Text Wrapping

Can Ignore Text Wrap be an option in the properties for Column Rules? As an instructional designer in a team, we often have screenshots of the UI, with a text wrap of Jump, at the top of the left column in a two column layout. Currently, that forces the column rule to begin below the image, see screenshot.

  4. Ability to create and edit Object styles in the Properties panel

Trying to lessen dependence on existing panels in an attempt to speed up workflow. So if I could create and edit full Object styles by accessing that option—similar to Para and Character styles on Properties panel, that would be great. I know the Properties panel is a work in progress, so hoping this may appear sometime in the not-to-distant future

  5. External Styles / Style Libraries to push Style updates dynamically and automatically to all documents.

Please develop some kind of External Style file format, that can be applied locally, and hopefully, via the cloud. But at least locally, PLEASE.

It is a crime that InDesign currently has NO WAY whatsoever to keep multiple documents styles synced. I run into this deeply frustrating problem all the time.

Currently, If I create a template file with some styles, and use that to create documents, and then If I update or refine paragraph styles, character styles, table styles, etc — there is no way for me to easily carry over those same styles to all other documents that…

  6. Object Styles: text frame color fill and stroke options

The current problem is that applying an object style with a stroke applies to everything within a group (photo B in screenshot). I want to be able to create a style that applies a stroke to the image but not the caption text box (photo a in screenshot).

One solution might be: Text frame options within object styles having their own stroke and fill options.

  7. Ability to scroll/move on page while style options window is open

In earlier versions of InDesign this was possible. Now I can only zoom in and out. While editing my styles I want to be able to still zoom AND scroll/move on the pages in order to see the changes where the take effect.

  8. Allow variables to be used within styles

It would be great to have a more flexible method of configuring styles; the purpose being to cut down on the number of styles with only minor differences between them.

We use page templates where the layout is pretty much the same, apart from minor differences / colours. But we have to define a complete set of styles for all colour variations, greatly increasing the complexity.

However, if you can enable any setting to be stored as a variable, this could reduce the number of styles in a document by 90%. For example:

A set of master styles for the…

  9. Add all case options to styles menu. Styles missing lowercase and sentence case.

For whatever reason the lowercase and sentence case options are available from the top menu under Type, but are not enabled in the paragraph style options. Please cross-enable the features. I recently had a client change the ingredients in a 200 page recipe book from sentence case to all lowercase. I ultimately ran a find and replace by style using GREP code, but it would've been much easier and more efficient to be able to build this into the styles.

  10. Creation of Table of Contents — Adjustable size of the interface window (width and height)

Creation of Table of Contents — Adjustable interface window (width and height)

When working in huge and very complex documents — with dozens and dozens of paragraph styles and very complex table of contents —, the limitations of the interface window are rather annoying. The window cannot namely be expanded to have a better view of the selected styles.

The number of visible styles is namely limited to four (see screenshot). And the width cannot be adjusted either.

It would thus be a considerable improvement if the window size could be customized in order to have a much better view…

  11. Problem with Paragraph Borders across the page (with same paragraph style)

In the "Paragraph Borders" we need an option that allows you to determine whether or not to leave the "paragraph border" at the bottom of the page. When using the same paragraph style (to simulate a table) often the client requires that the border at the bottom (or top) of the page are not visible, to indicate continuity (as happens now in the case in which the same paragraph is divided between the two pages).

    Operating system: "catalina 10.15.1".
    InDesign: version 15.0.1.

  13. ‘nth of type’ conditions for paragraph styles

In CSS, we can use an nth-of-type() selector to define behaviour for the nth instance of a style. For example, we can make all paragraphs have a first line indent, but use nth-of-type(1) to remove the indent from the first paragraph on the page. This feature also supports (odd) and (even) values for n.

This feature would be extremely useful in Indesign for a range of use cases. Importantly, it would eliminate the need for several styles when typesetting multiple-paragraph block quotes, interview dialogue (indenting/outdenting), drop caps on chapter openings, etc.

For full flexibility, I imagine the feature would offer…

  14. Store the state of a style group, open or closed, when saving a document

    Current state:
If I open a style group in a styles panel, save, close and reopen the document all style groups are closed by default.

    Feature modification request:
Save the state of a style group, open or closed, when saving a document.

This should be done to all panels that allow for style groups.

    Regards,

  15. Select multiple, discontinuous paragraphs

When applying paragraph styles throughout a document, it is only possible to select multiple continuous paragraphs in one go. If I want to style all first level headings, for example, I have to click on each, apply the paragraph style and repeat and repeat and repeat... Often finding the appropriate style requires scrolling in the paragraph styles window. It would be very useful, and much quicker, to be able to select all headings and apply Head A (or whatever) in one click. This might be achieved by clicking in the paragraphs with a keyboard combination pressed or, as was done…

  16. Reset to base for one single parameter of a paragraph/character/etc. style

I wish there was an easy way to just reset one specific parameter of a style to base ([ignore]).

    For example:
I have paragraph style p2 which is based on p1. I previously overwrote the Font Style of p2 but now I decided to change it back to inherit the Font Style of its base style (p1). It would be nice to have some way to do that only for the Font Style. Not for the Font Family or Size or any other parameter. Maybe by option–, cmd- or right-clicking on the parameter's name...?

  17. Be Able To Apply Color to Text And Object Style Definitions and Sort Them By Color

I work with a large number of paragraph, character and object styles. Even though I can order them alphabetically, it's still tedious to find the right style since the panel is so small. Grouping them is another option but I find it just adds another level in the hierarchy and adds to the already crowded assortment of styles.
It would be nice if I could assign a color to 1 or more style definitions and also be able to Sort By Color.

  18. Bullet lists: add option for custom spacing of first and last entries

In a paragraph style defined as a bullet list, you often need to have more space BEFORE THE FIRST item or AFTER THE LAST item. This is possible in CSS and would just need a couple of extra fields added to the "Bullets and Numbering" section in the "Paragraph Style" panel.

The only option now is to create additional styles or to use overrides.

Use the Indents and Spacing section of the Paragraph Style dialog to specify Space Before and Space After. Use the option “Space Between Paragraphs Using Same Style” to specify the space between the bulleted list items.

For example, if Space Before is 6 pt, Space After is 8 pt, and Space Between is 0 pt, the bulleted list will have 6 pt before the 1st item, 8 pt after the last item and in between the bulleted list items, space will be 0 pt.

    Hope this helps.

  20. Nested Styles - Add more options to apply them to END of a paragraph

When creating a nested style, the only options we have for its activation point are [through] *** or [up to] ***. This means they're designed to have an affect only at the START of a paragraph, and to work only from left to right. This is very inflexible, and it's frustrating to work around, especially if we want particular style variation to occur somewhere at the END of paragraph.

It would be really helpful if in addition to the two existing options, you added ones like [after] or [after first instance of] or [after nth instance of] or [before last…
