indesign 12.0.0.81, OSX 10.11.6.
After more experimenting it appears to be related to how some of the headings with span columns set rewrap further down in the document.

Hi,
Can you let us know the version of InDesign you are using and the Operating System? I tried with InDesign CC 2017.1 and did not face any crash by increasing the columns from 1 to 40(max) on my windows machine.-Aman

Happens immediately after the screen is refreshed.
Reset in the preferences did not fix.
