Allow the paragraph shading to 'knock out' paragraph border in some way for more usefullness
If I specify a border & use just the 'top' as a horizontal rule with the idea to have it appear only on either side of a line of text, there isn't an option to do that or for the shading to knock-out the 'border' or have one in front of the other so it would be handy to be able to specify that one is on top of the other & the option to knock it out or a gap size. I've achieved the desired effect in the 2nd image with a white stroke but that doesn't work well…

I am designing a book with message bubbles, wish you had a variety of them in paragraph shading. Perhaps paragraph custom "shapes."

Right click a Style Sheet, Find this Style
For years I've been hoping for an option to right click a a specific style to FIND THIS STYLE in the document. Because we all name them differently, I sometimes need to find a Style in the document, rather than click all over the place to hunt it down.
I'm currently working with a manual that I did not create. There are 30 or 40 styles I have to clean up. I love the Select All Unused option, but now I have styles that I know I'm not using and they're still showing as existing somewhere in the document.
Please…

Need a tutorial on forcing a paragraph style to actually work
I've been sporadically hunting for a year on how to force a paragraph style to actually work in a text box. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Yes, I've tried the option bit. All I want is for the right margins to be the same, and to have a bottom margin that will keep the last line X amount of line-height from the bottom of the text box.

Using local alphabets in Numering Style Format (Paragraph Styles)
We have only two character formats "A, B, C, D ..." and "a, b, c, d ..." except digital. But many of us work with texts in languages with other alphabets, which are also used as indexes of lists. It would be nice to have formats of local alphabets depending on the language chosen for the paragraph. For example, if the Russian language is selected for the paragraph, then in the list of character formats, except the Latin alphabet, there will be a Russian "А, Б, В, Г..."
This property should not depend on whether the localized or English version…2 votes -
Easier crosschecking, resetting and copying throughout all styles
We are working with at least ten different paragraph styles per document. If there are changes to be made in the CIs we have to check every single style: Opening up the Paragraph Style Options window, changing, closing, next style, reapeat... forgetting something and opening all windows again to check.
-> How about a button in the Paragraph Style Options window to jump to the previous or next style in the list? (might be useful to every kind of Style Option window)In the Paragraph Style Options window there is a Reset to Base button only under General.

Keyboard Shortcut for Adopting Paragraph Style Sheets
Using the text tool, click in a paragraph.
Hold Option & Shift, then click a Style Sheet formatted paragraph
The paragraph that had the text tool in it is now formatted to the [Option/Shift] clicked paragraph's Style Sheet.
This is one of the most time saving keyboard shortcuts from Quark Xpress.
This saves countless hours for anyone formatting text, albeit a tri-fold, or a 1,000 page catalog.
PS: If you're going to mention Command/Return to bring up Style Sheets, this is not time saving. The user still has to scroll the curser around to select the Paragraph/Character Style Sheet, removing…

Incremental measurement entries in Character Stylesheets
Would be great to have a way of adding incremental values to properties in a character style.
In other words instead of setting a character style that has +20 tracking and is 9pt on 12pt leading, you would be able to set it so it is ++20 tracking (whatever the paragraph tracking is plus 20) and --1pt size (whatever the paragraph font size is minus 1pt) on --2pt leading (whatever the paragraph leading is minus 1pt) .
Percentages would also be great and even better if we can reference other properties (ie leading is 130% of font size).

Rule Above and Below visible both in panel
It is confusing that when Rule Below is active, still the inactive Rule Above is show in the Paragraph Style tab.
Why not show both at once?

Eliminate Basic Paragraph style
Please eliminate the Basic Paragraph Style. Don’t just allow users to delete it (but if nothing else, at least do that). Remove the style from new documents and don’t have it in the panel by default.
The style is a trap. Users who edit the style or use the style and base other styles on Basic Paragraph usually fall into a trap when copying and pasting text between documents that have different definitions of the style. The text will paste in with different formatting that in the source document. When this happens there are usually one of two reactions: “How…

Add Wavy to Custom New Stroke Style
While it would be nice, to have full custom stroke support like Illustrator, It would be great to have a custom wavy style in addition to the current dash, dotted and stripe options. A simple option to select the wavy style with variables for, amplitude, frequency, randomness, and a toggle of smooth or linear. This would enable a lot more variety in custom strokes.

Character Styles Change Case (Capitlaization)
Is it possible to include change case in character styles?
I realize there are already a few (small caps, all caps, OT all small caps), but I would like to have included lower case, title case, and sentence case, which are already in the type menu.
Thank you,

Integrated controls for styles
I think it would be more intuitive to integrate styles in with the manual controls they go with, especially for character and paragraph styles, like so:
-slide the panel left to see the current settings and make manual changes, slide the panel right to switch to a new style.
-When you look at the manual controls, every element has an icon to show that it is matching a style, and another icon shows if an override is applied.
-click an override icon to remove that specific override1 vote -
Cmd K should create a Hyperlink
I find myself constantly hitting Cmd + K when trying to add a hyperlink in InDesign and always going "GAH!" because that keystroke opens the preferences panel.
With InDesign trying to be competitive in the online publishing department, I recommend using the same keystroke most other programs use (Google, Word). Even if it's not the same quick command, hyperlinks should be easy to add.

stylistic alternates
Please make it so that OpenType stylistic alternates can be accessed through paragraph and/or character styles. For instance, my OT font has an alternate form of capital W which I prefer to the default form. It is listed in the Glyphs panel as Stylistic Alternates (salt). However, there is no way to activate this alternate W without manually replacing all default capital Ws with the alternate form I prefer. And even when I do that, reapplying a Paragraph Style to any paragraph where I've changed the W will revert the W to the default. I would like to at least…

Paragraph border and splitted columns
When working with the paragraph border option, its impossible to split the columns and make it look decent, without a huge workaround.
It would be great if the "split column" options could habe a checkbox like "do not split paragraph border" or so.
