  1. Mark layers as visible in the exported PDF but non-printing from within InDesign export settings

PDFs have the ability to mark layers as non-printing, so that they appear visible on the screen but don't print to hard copy. I'm using this capability to add a light raster background to all pages of a workbook for students, which adds a bit of warm color to the on-screen viewing experience, but I don't want this background to use up all their toner if they decide to print the pages. Similarly, the entire workbook has page numbers, but the worksheets should print without the page numbers, because they're not relevant outside the context of the book.

    I found…

  2. Preflight. Hidden pages

It would be great if we had the option to add hidden pages to the preflight.

When working with long documents, if your pages panel is small it might be difficult to see a hidden page.

For translation projects, it might be essential that only text that is going to be visible in the final pdf is actually present in the indd /idml file so hidden pages should be identified and deleted.

  3. Chance to see export estimated file size in Indesign

I think it would be great if Indesign provided estimated size information before exporting to PDF or another format. Just like doing JPEG in Photoshop. Don't you think it's a good idea?

  4. Improve performace

It would be great to be able to utilize multiple processor cores and GPU for PDF export. InDesign versions have been stagnant in terms of export speed for a few releases. I think it's time to improve this and move towards a more modern architecture.

  5. Options to enter #firstpage #lastpage in PDF filename

It would be great if you could add the option to add #firstpage and #lastpage to PDF filename. Lots of typographers require that in order to keep publications in order.
I work for a monthly magazine and in our workflow we create single articles that we gather into an InDesign Book. This would avoid the need of renumbering ALL the publication filenames – in case something changes in the articles order of appearance – and rebuild the Book before the PDF creation (I do this via a script by Peter Kahrel that exports the Book as single documents)

  6. Retain hyperlinks within imported PDF files and export PDF file from InDesign

With many publications hosted online, we receive a lot of adverts containing hyperlinks as advertisers embrace the fact that specific web pages, websites, YouTube videos, Podcasts, email, social media and more can be embedded. Unfortunately, InDesign only see PDF files as image objects; therefore, hyperlinks are lost when the artwork is exported as a new PDF.

We currently patch transparent objects over the artwork, select text, then copy and paste to apply links to ensure all are seen after the PDF has been exported from our InDesign file.

To retain imported links with PDF files would be a huge time-saver.…

  7. Export multiple joboptions with the same name as in the Indesign-menu

When saving joboptions, you are only allowed to save 1 joboption at a time. For someone who wants to hand over his joboptions to another person, this means you have to export every joboption bit by bit. That can last a long time!

Please allow to export ("save") multiple joboptions via the Pdf-Presets-Menu and include that the export saves the names of the joboptions!

((When exporting /saving one joboption, Indesign does not remember the name of it which is very annoying. Please change that!))

  8. Embed InDesign's Acrobat export settings in pdfs so they can be retrieved by other users.

PDFs are often delivered in artwork packages with no indication of what settings were used to make them.

Files are then updated, localised, re-worked by other users (I specialise in localisation DTP) and then PDFs are required with the same settings.

If these aren't saved in the InDesign file then it would be great to be able to "import" the settings from a PDF that has been made with this feature enabled. It would save having to revert to clients who themselves may not know the settings used by the original designers / printers.

  9. option to have PDF Export to output PDF using page number as prefix

Printer needs files with prefix page number. The export make no sense with it being at the end when you have different file names and won't allow the combining of multiple files with different names that I use to proof my magazines. By the way, scripts are not working using Monterey OS any more. What a disappointment.

  10. Character Limits, Comb Line Form Fields and Font Alignment for Form Fields

    Hello,

I would like to suggest that character limits can be set for comb line form fields. Also I would like there to be a possibility of creating comb line form fields (without creating tables). In addition, there should be alignment of the text as an option in the form field (whether left, center or right). This would save so much time and effort so that once the document is exported as a tagged PDF, those features mentioned would also be set. Finally, there should be a way to tag layout tables so that it does not register as a…

  11. Batch Export indb

I would need to have the ability to batch export a folder of books to pdf. The community scripts are not enough—there are features missing.

Also batch export would have to have
    – auto update links in documents,
    – auto closing and saving (otherwise page numbers are wrong in shared documents).

  12. InDesign: convert text to outlines when exporting to PDF

When exporting a file from Indesign instead of using the Transparency Flattner Presets and then start changing things on the PDF export popup, I suggest to add a checkmark on the PDF export popup - Convert all texts to outlines.

Itll make it more easy to all of the users, Iam working with Indesign for more than 10 years, each time I installed anew version of Indesign i needed to configure it again and each time I didn't understand why didn't you add this option.

    Thanks,
    Idan

  14. Save PDFs in Black and White

Currently to get my pdfs in black and white I either have to edit each photo individually or I have to export it from indisegn, pull into photoshop, turn black and white, then bring it into illustrator to save as a pdf. This is ludicrous. There should just be an option to save a pdf of the document in black and white. This has been on the community boards for over 4 years and still isn't done.

  15. Export PDF from InDesign with comments pre marked up

Load in comments in InDesign and export to PDF.
Currently, you need to export to PDF > Open in Acrobat find the section to add the comment.

Would be killer and save time - Cheers :)

  16. Create button to open PDF file in a separate tab, from InDesign

If I create an interactive PDF with a button to open another PDF, it overrides the currently open PDF with no route back to the original PDF. In InDesign, it would be useful to be able to tell the button to open the file separately rather than overriding the original. This is obviously only an issue if it's a PDF as other file types will naturally open in their native program, ie: .doc for Word.

The current work-around for this is to create a link field directly in Acrobat to open the file, as this allows for opening PDF's in…

  17. Combine single page PDF into a spread from Books

When using Books and exporting to a PDF, if you have single pages, they just show as a single page. Maybe have an option to combine single pages into a spread.

  20. When creating hypertext links, please add the ability to configure the link to open in a new browser window.

Many of the PDFs I create are opened and viewed via Web browser. It's annoying to the user -- and takes them away from our content -- when they click on a link and the link opens in the same browser tab.
