Highlight Box Behind Text
This is so commonly used in design, that it even exists in Adobe Express, yet for some reason has never been introduced to InDesign. Instead we have had to create underlines and adjust them, which then needs to be adjusted every time font size is changed.
I imagine this is not a difficult thing to introduce, and it would be a huge help to so many people within publication design

Enable an index entry that's "Current Page" plus or minus "n" page.
I'm currently in a situation where I have multiple tables in a book, and each table bridges across its spread. The index entry I want to make is on the right-hand (recto) page but, because the upper-left corner of the text frame containing the table is on the preceding left-hand page, the index entry takes the number of that preceding page, not the correct right-hand page.
In practice, this means I have to go back and manually change the index entry page number to one page higher - for every single entry.
Implementing this would just require another option for…

Make 'Preferences/Grids/Baseline grid' changes live
When using 'Preferences/Grids/Baseline grid' to set, or change, or modify the baseline grid, it would be really useful if the changes were visible live, rather than having to repeatedly open/close the dialogue window to see changes.

Fontmetrics/TextMetrics data to be included in Info panel
I would like these information to be available in info panel of Indesign. It really helps. Select a character and then it should show following information:

Baseline: 12.138 4.3356936
Ascender: 8.736 3.1204992

Indesign CJK Version Request : Standard Vertical Roman Alignment
Please add the simple feature of standard vertical roman alignment in adobe indesign CJK version as well.
In all the other versions of Indesign, and also in other basic applications like the photoshop or illustrator, there is an option to vertically align roman alphabets. However, in the CJK version, the vertical writing tool only provides the option to typeset the roman alphabets and numbers in a 90 degree rotated way.
If I wanted to write them vertically without having to rotate it, I have to manually do so in Character settings, but that is not a good option since the…

Support ODT files
ODT files are used by open source software Libre Office who inherited from both Open Office and Neo Office. It's used by Microsoft users, Apple Users and Linux users. Since it's open source software, it's 100% free. It allows for the same sort of features that Microsoft does as much as Google Docs does similarly.
Google currently does support ODT files. (see Screenshot) Shouldn't Adobe follow suit and do the same? Every other program does, so why not Adobe?
InDesign needs to support ODT files for the following reasons:
1. LIbre Office is Free.Adobe costs a lot of money…

More options to compare fonts
When creating a layout I often like to compare different fonts and see which one best matches the project. I would like feature where you can input text (eg. a title or line of text) and get an overview of that text in different fonts that you have installed. Currently you can only go through the list of fonts via the character panel, but this doesn't offer a lot of flexibility in comparing your options side by side.

Keep text box attributes when creating outlines.
When creating outlines for text, InDesign should separate out the text box and turn that into an object with the same parameters that were initially set. So, if I have white text in a black box with a yellow stroke, the black box with yellow stroke should remain in the layout when selecting "Create Outlines". Right now the box disappears.

Opentype + Glyphs UI Menu Preview
The UI for Opentype is extremely difficult and time consuming to use. The entire thing needs to be set up like Illustrator, with one addition: PREVIEW TYPOGRAPHIC FEATURES (especially the stylistic sets).
This UI feature should behave just like the Fonts Menu: When you open the font family menu with text highlighted, each font you hover over previews on your selected text.
This needs to be replicated for Opentype and Glyphs. So once you open the dropdown for stylist sets or glyphs, each style you hover over, will preview in real time on your selected text or in a pop…

Empty Text Frames in Preflight Panel
It would be really nice if the Preflight Panel (or another tool) could detect text frames with no text in them and give the user an option to delete them. Empty text frames don't cause that many problems in print, but when you export to ePub, they often create some odd pagination and other errors. I think they usually happen because I bring in a new story and it kicks out 15 pages. Then I highlight the text and apply a style and the text shrinks to 12 pages, but leaves behind empty boxes. If I don't go back and…

Add brackets and arcs as underline options
To signal a contraction of a word, or a relation between two words, it would be helpful to have brackets and arcs (like slurs in a musical sheet) as underline options. This would simplify the edition of dictionaries and musical text.

Option to lock text box position only, with text remaining editable
I would love the ability to lock the position of text boxes in a layout, while still allowing editing of the text contents. (Similar to the multiple types of layer lock in Photoshop).
This would be useful for the template documents I make and then share with collaborators. Other users edit the text, but sometimes accidentally nudge text boxes out of place that should be consistent in placement. I use Object Styles to check placement, but it's time-consuming to check each text box in a document with 100+ pages.

Add New Stand-Alone Styles for Tracking Changes in Layout View
There are times when I need two lines of text to stay in a frame/page. I can do this manually, but I get overrides. I could accomplish this using paragraph styles, but globally it would impact other frame layouts; or result in many more paragraph styles (I already have over 40 for long documents). I could do it using character styles, which I do, but then I lose other necessary character styles like italics applied to a book title.
If we could have a separate Style for 'tracking', kerning, character spacing, character width, etc. it would. be so helpful.

Please add Document First Page Number and Document Page Range to Text Variables
I'm doing a layout for a scientific journal, and each article is in a separate file. The articles are then combined into a book. An important piece of information is the page range, which is part of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) used by scientists to search. Additional text variables like Document Start Page and Document Page Range are much needed. The last variable requires separator formatting between numbers (e.g. 35-70 or 35…70)

Protect approved text or pages. Properly lock text, objects or layers so that Ctrl Z doesn't undo the lock
Sometimes when I am doing multiple Ctrl-Zs on a page it flicks back to an article on a previous page and undoes that too. If that has been previously approved and Ctrl Z makes changes I miss, that's a problem, especially if I press another key by mistake before I can do re-do. It would be very useful to properly lock approved content so that Ctrl-Z doesn't affect it. A default option would be great.

AI Translation in future InDesign
Adobe Express now has built-in AI translation services for their product. Why is this not available in InDesign?
I'm not expecting 100% accuracy, we have translators to proof results, but this would be so much more efficient as a first-pass instead of exporting IDML to send to a service or through Trados software.

Serbian language
Hello, on behalf of all the page layout designers from Serbia, I am asking you to include support for the Serbian language in a future version of Indesign. We use both Cyrillic and Latin letters equally, so this option would mean a lot to us.
Thank you!3 votes
