Crash on Importing Large Word File

InDesign is crashing on importing a large (859-page) Word .docx file. The document begins to import for a couple of seconds but then InDesign crashes and there is a 'may be damaged' warning on reopening the file.
Attempts were made to import into a completely new document and multiple variations of import settings have been tried, as has resaving, duplicating and deleting comments and saving the Word file. Smart Text Reflow has also been turned off but this hasn't helped.

My colleagues and I have experienced numerous crashes while Placing Word documents, using customized Word Import Settings. Very often, we are placing fairly short Word files--many are just a couple hundred kilobytes.
In some cases, the crash occurs when I select Customized Style Import - Style Mapping. The crashes seem to be random, with no regard to a particular Word or InDesign file, or a specific Word Import Setting (we use several).
We've just noticed this in the current version. (Creative Cloud updates are controlled by a system admin. We don't have the option of reverting to a previous version, or updating as soon as a new version is available.)
