Preserve Image Dimensions when Relinking and "Auto-fit" options do not seem to work.
I am using Indesign 14.0
When I relink files, Indesign changes the scale and placement of images automatically, regardless of whether the preserve image dimensions option in the file handling box is checked or unchecked, and whether the "auto-fit" button in the tool menu is checked or uncheked.
Preferences > File Handling > "Preserve Image Dimensions when Relinking"

Please describe the issue in more detail.
What is the state of “Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking” in Preferences – is it checked or unchecked? What is the state of “Auto-Fit” – is it checked or unchecked?

Yes, preserve image... is checked. I don't know where you're finding Auto-fit.
This DIDN"T HAPPEN UNTIL RECENTLY. I deliberately make new versions of files in the same artboard so that I can substitute easily. I make whole sets of images/icons with the same artboard so that my design process is easy.
PLEASE REVERT TO AUTOMATICALLY MAINTAINING SIZE AND POSITION.
And might I add how unbelievably difficult you've just made this for me to comment here. Surely you want users' genuine feeback? This has taken me an hour.

I've been having this issue for a while too, and just realized "Make Content Aware Fit default..." was checked-on in Preferences>General. Unchecked it and problem solved.

Me too! Terrible! Regardless of "retain" or "not retain" image dimensions checked in file handling. Major major issue which has halted my productivity.

InDesign does not retain image size when linking with images with the same sizes (Preferences->File Handling->Preserve Image Dimensions - same behaviour whether checked or not) - When placing from desktop - when relinking it works - but it is not so user friendly :)

I have updated to 14.0.1 and the problem still exists. This is a major workload problem, especially for designers working in fields with heavy page formatting. I hope it gets fixed as soon as possible.

Yes, preference is set to "preserve image dimensions when relinking". Version 13.0.1 for Mac.
